My friend has a bird named Polly and I wanted him to like me sooooo badly, but it sucks Bc he hates pretty much everyone. One day my friend and I were on the phone and I asked if I could talk to Polly, so they put me on speaker phone. Polly and I had a good long conversation that mainly consisted of whistles and hellos! Eventually when I went over to my friend's house I started to talk to Polly the same way I do on the phone. Now he trusts me a great deal, and even asks me for snacks. :) ❤️ I feel pretty honored to be appreciated by a bird lol.

I recommend a budgie, as young as they have - so you can definitely pair-bond. it's very fulfilling to see them love you when you walk in the room or make noise in the other room. they're adorable. good luck on your decision.

My mom bought me a bird when I was six years old. She never supervised me when I was handling my budgie but what she did was showing me a book about them and explaining everything that was written in there. I called him bobo, he was my very first pet. After school the first thing I did was going to his cage and feeding him. It took me a while to get him tamed but then he flew at my shoulder and nibbled my ear so full of love. I let him play with my brass cup that I used for crumbs from sharpening pencils and I still remember how he pushed it all over my table and made me laugh. I still miss him even though it has been over 20 years. He flew away one day when my mom accidently left the window open :( Please remember that child behaviour depends on the parents. Kids are very carefull with pets if you tell them what will scare them and what they like. When I was older, I got another pet. The two neighbour boys loved my rabbit to death so my mom let them into the apartment whenever they asked to see my rabbit. We told them how the rabbit likes it and they did really good and carefull.

This video is very helpful... I plan on getting a pet bird, a cockatiel because from what I read they are very afective and social... I've been struggling with severe depression for the past few months.... I've been feeling extremely lonely and abandoned even if I have amazing people around.... And I feel like I need something to keep me busy... I want to dedicate my time and affection to someone... Without feeling like they get tierd of me... I really think that taking care and training a little feathery friend would help me a lot..... One of my closest friends haves around 5 birds.... And every time I visit her I like to admire them, listen to them... Or even sing to them... I remember having 2 canaries as a kid... But I was too small to take proper care of them... Even if I loved them.... I remember being afraid of handling them... Because they seemed so fragile and I was scared of hurting them... Also my mother wasn't ok with letting then outside the cage too often... Because she didn't wanted shit and feathers all over the room... She is a bit OCD , when it comes to cleanness... They eventually died.... The female first... Because she got seek... And the male became depressed and followed her an year later... Witch broke my heart.... After all those years... It was pretty hard to convince my mom (I still live with her).... Back then she blame me for the birds death... Because I was neglecting them.... But u can't expect a 7 year old to know how to properly care for two birds... I'm willing to get one to help with my loneliness

Hi. I know this reply is very late, but if you still suffer from depression, I do not suggest a bird as pet. I don't suggest a pet at all. You want to focus on yourself for now.

yes! i have a beautiful 5 year old cockatiel named Chippie. he can be a brat sometimes, but he is very loyal and sweet. cockatiels love and crave affection, attention and head scratches. If you purchase a male, you can teach him to talk a little, say his name (like a pokémon, haha) and even sing! I have taught Chippie to sing, "if you're happy and you know it clap your hands" .
@ren92705 жыл бұрын
@@cleliaoconnell3705 I somewhat disagree because I suffered from severe depression and getting my dog was the best thing I could have ever done for myself. He kept my mind off my depression and it really helped me through it. He was the reason I laughed and I basically took him everywhere I could. I don't know about any other pets, but dogs are so sweet and can definitely help with loneliness.

We have a sun conure. She's 10. We bought her from people who were allowing their kids to poke at them with sticks or forks, so we said we need to get her out of there! She was hard to get to know us at first, but I sat in front of her cage with the door open and sang to her and within 2 weeks, she became mine exclusively. She will go to other people, but she only really is most comfortable with me.She has a small vocabulary...maybe 4 or 5 words. She is very jealous of other pets in the house, but tolerates them. She is definitely a mama's girl. Her name is Paca. They told us she was a boy when we got her, but we later found out she was a girl. I usually just call her "Mama". I have fallen madly in love with her and she is definitely my favorite pet in the house, although I love all of them, she and I have formed a very strong bond. Thank you for putting out this video. People really don't need a bird like this unless they are willing to devote time and care in order to keep it healthy, both mentally & physically. I take her out for at least 2 hours a day, more usually. Everyday! Love your video!

One big thing I noticed you didn't mention in the video is how long it can take for birds to actually bond with you when you first get them. I have a male eclectus, and have had him for about 5 - 6 years now, and it took a good 2 1/2 - 3 years for him to fully bond with me. Part of this was due to him having abusive owners before me, but even a bird that is well adjusted will take a long time to bond with their owner, many times taking 6 months or more. People don't think of this when they first get a bird, and after a month or two their bird still isn't bonded to them so they give them up, thinking their bird is just mean. This is super important to consider when getting a bird! Yes there are always exceptions, but the vast majority of the time it will be a long while before the bird warms up to their new owner. And this is when given the proper attention and care.
@IMakePeopleSaltyApparently6 жыл бұрын
kannaredpanda i know someone with 2 parakeets. They bonded within a month. It's different for eqch individual bird/owner. Thats probably why it wasnt mentioned.
@kannaredpanda6 жыл бұрын
Of course it is different in each case. However that doesn't mean that your friend was the usual either. Most of the time from the people I know who have birds; it can take a very long time for them to bong. Emphasis on 'can'. I never stated that all people have to wait ages to bond with their bird, but it is something that can happen, and frequently does. If you read my whole comment you would have noticed at the end it said "Yes there are always exceptions". I'm glad your friend was an exception, but an exception is just that, it doesn't dictate the norm. It is something that should have been mentioned, because a lot of new bird owners might not realize this, and end up giving up on their bird. A rescue a friend of mine works at has found this to be the case with a lot of the birds they get in, the owners expect to bond with them right away or within a month or two, then they don't, and give up with the idea that their bird doesn't like them, or that they were too mean. It is a real problem that I worry not a lot of people with birds address.
@aquafractalyne55276 жыл бұрын
This is reassuring, thank you! I figured it would take a while for my birds to bond with me as they're from a pet store and very skittish. I know they'll have long lives with me, thiugh, so there's plenty of time for them to learn I'm safe to be around :)
@AndreaCregooo6 жыл бұрын
kannaredpanda Thank you for the tip! I agree, I wish he would have mentioned it, and this is only the second video I have watched on the topic of considering getting a bird, but I was disappointed that he didn’t mention this and I have a feeling most other videos won’t either. I imagine it might help, if you spend as much time as possible with your bird, immediately after getting him/her. Does it matter how young or old the bird is when you adopt? Or, does it matter the environment (I’m sure it does, apply some common sense) the bird was born into? Also, do they sleep at night? I’ve been warned that they can be loud, but who cares about that while I’m awake, right? 😝 So many unanswered questions!

I have been obsessed with birds since I was little, I would draw them all the time and literally sit in a tree and watch them I also had a bird field book and marked off the birds in it whenever I see one. I really want a parakeet and I have done all the research and know pretty much everything I need to know and I am saving up my money but my mom says no.

Bird should never be alone. They need a companion 24/7 Left alone the spirit goes from their eyes & they lose their will to live which weakens their immunity. They can use perches they walk over to keep beak & claws blunted or train to nibble their own claws & sand their own beak like mine. I work from home so am with my bird 24/7. I had to teach him to yell mum when I leave the room if he needs me & this stopped him screaming every time I left. He is now 16 so we've been together since he was rescued at 9 months & he is very easy. He is only loud & annoying if I give him cause to be. Some smaller species have repetitive chirruping & larger macaws do not do this. Nor do they imitate annoying sounds. They speak when they need to & will teach us to use shorter words or sounds in place of words, that's how smart they are. Your own personality is what will either make the bird fit or not. Like a badly behaved child. If you raise the bird as a companion you can have amazing fun together. x

This a nice video for ppl who are considering getting birds. I wanted to add just a bit more tips for starting bird owners: -Birds CAN die of sadness if left alone for too long or they lose the person/mate they bond with, they can self mutilate as well -Birds are more expensive than your average cat/dog vet, they NEED an avian vet. -Avian vet visits are about $200-500 each visit because they are specialized. -General emergency vets will not know much about birds at all UNLESS they themselves are an avian vet. -Birds are good at hiding illnesses and will not show them until the illness is pretty much established. -Small birds can still have loud calls, so know which ones scream and which ones don't (ex: lovebirds). -A seed only diet is lacking in vitamins and is strongly advised against, pellets are the best type of diet along with. veggies/fruits/cooked foods. -Birds love to chew on things including electric cables, shirts, wood (furniture as well), and the walls. A larger parrot can destroy a chair. Each bird has a different lifespan, energy requirements, diet, so be sure to do your research for any type of bird! Hope this helps!

@xXdwsizevilXx7 жыл бұрын
Start over, go back to offering him millet seed (budgies/parakeets love millet) and getting him used to you being near him, talking to him etc. It will take time, be patient. After a few weeks take two wooden rods (similar to a perch) and train him to step up (say step up) by gently pushing on his belly with the rod. Do that for a few minutes a day for until you feel like you can try it with your fingers. You can do this, just be patient.

I never had any pets in my life and 5 months ago i decided to visit a petshop and get a pet and so i got a 3 months old indian ringneck ,i never tried to get close to him but he always came to me ,one day i let his cage open and he flew in the house and i was sitting and eating my food and he came right over to me. So from that day i decided to spend more time with my IRN and i taught him tricks and i also gained his trust, wherever i go in the house he flies to me and he would sit on my shoulder for hours, he only shouts like 4 times a day and it isnt so loud, indian ringnecks are very smart and arent shy ,they also have a great personality and the more you spend time with them the less they will try biting ,but they need attention

Birds are really intelligent and extremely social. My cockatiel (of 13 years now) is sincerely attached to me, when I went abroad to study for 3 years, he plucked all his underwing feathers out of stress even though my parents took care of him as best as they can. We've seen a lot of illnesses that we never thought birds can have so they need to be observed regularly for any signs of unusual stuff. I wouldn't even say they need as much care as a dog, I would say as much care as a child.

Birds are a lot of work, if kept/brought up well. People don't realize how much work goes into keeping a feathered friend. I've had mine for nine years and wouldn't trade him for anything. They require LOTS of attention and need to have cage/food/water changed daily. They like to play and give back to you what you give to them. Don't get a bird unless you are ready to make a bonafide commitment to them.

I had friends with an extremely well trained, well bonded small parrot. It would walk along the kitchen counter and ask for food by gently saying “cracker?” You gave it a snack and it would take it and walk back to its cage, climb on top and then slowly start eating the snack. I wanted one so bad. Then they got a full on, giant, wild and completely untamed Macaw. They were afraid to reach into the cage (the size of a refrigerator) because it would try to bite and this bird could take off your finger like you or I would bite off a hunk of a carrot. Did I mention how loud it shrieked 24/7? You give wise counsel when you say not to get a bird on impulse. I would add never get a bird because you liked a similar looking bird.

@abby48618 жыл бұрын
You could leave them at your avian vet if theh have animal boarding. If that's too expensive then try to teach your bird into safely traveling. There's a ton of videos on KZfaq about that. Just make sure you teach it before you actually go on vacation
@MetalChick308 жыл бұрын
That depends on how attached the bird is to you. I traveled out of country for two weeks and left my baby with a bird sitter and came back to find her near death because she got depressed and refused to eat, which led to having psittacosis as well. Some avian vets have quality boarding for birds which results in a pricey bill. Those are some things to consider before getting a bird. Also, some states and countries have ag restrictions on which birds can come into and out of the country.

Birds and hamsters are very different animals. I have a lovebird and I just recently got a syrian hamster. I would say that birds have much more personality, but are likely to bite a lot. There are also COUNTLESS household items that pose a danger to birds, so you will need an empty room, with only bird perches/cages to exercise your bird. On the other hand, hamsters are much easier to exercise, although are more fragile. They can only live up to 5 years, (if dwarfs) and 3 years (if syrians). This is better if you want a pet that isn't as big of a commitment. You shouldn't use hamster balls (poor ventilation and the hamster can't chose to leave), so must purchase an escape-proof run for them. Neither pet is good with traveling, but (in my own experience) birds will be able to cope okay with a day of travel. Hamsters should always be housed in the same cage (they're stressed easily), so someone should add food to their bowl each day. The minimum size cages for hamsters are quite large, so a pet-sitter will not have to clean the cage, unless you are gone for over 2 weeks. A pet sitter for a bird will have to clean daily and stay for at least an hour, to supervise their exercise. This will be very expensive. Basically, don't travel with either animal (both get stressed). If you can't afford expensive pet-sitters, get a hamster and give a neighbor a few dollars to top-up the food bowl each day.

The one thing about having children around birds is sort of true. My dad bought our Parrotlet for himself, and she ended up bonding with my sister. It’s really sweet actually and she is usually a very crazy person, but whenever she’s with her bird, she calms down and cuddles with the bird.

As someone who grew up with dozens of birds in the house I can second everything said in this video. Birds are loud, birds are messy and birds are very particular about people. I had a Senegal parrot that loved me and was friendly towards almost everyone else. The only exception was my mother, she hated her. We also had a sitren crested cockatoo that was very friendly toward women and if he noticed that a man was closer to his favourite woman than he was, he became aggressive toward the man. This was cause for him to be re-homed many times. Don't get me wrong, the were both lovely birds, but these are things you need to take into account when you think about getting a bird. They're very smart and have a lot of attitude in comparison to most other pets.

Mango can learn to like other people too. Training is good for building trust with a bird. Just start from a distance were he feels comfortable and click train him for his relaxed State of mind. Treats are great too. Makes a bird like you. I have 8 years of experience with amazons. I had a very scared amazon who didn’t trust people and was afraid of anything new. It took a lot of time and patients but we ended up being the best friends and I could hold him and he was even okay with new toys in he’s cage and new people. It is possible. Just take time and training. And of cause love.

If you are looking to get a bird that you can easily train and take out of it's cage often and craves attention, a great bird is a cockatiel. A few tips when purchasing your bird: 1. pet shop birds are often not hand raised and can have health problems (make sure you check the birds at your local pet shop if you want to buy from a pet shop. make sure the bird has no visible health problems, and don't be afraid to ask questions! 2. breeders are always better, in my opinion. my Granma breeds Eclectus parrots and keeps a variety of other species, so she was the one who helped me find a private breeder to purchase my cockatiel from. 3. make sure the bird has been hand raised, so it will be much easier for you to handle as soon as it gets home. whereas if it is not hand raised, it may take months for you to hand train it. As for cleaning up after your cockatiel, I tend to clean my bird's cage once a week. I scrub out the bottom of the cage with warm water and mild soap and leave it in the sun to dry. Then I wipe over the cage frame (if it is dirty) with baby wipes. I place 8 square sheets of paper towel in the bottom so the cage is easier to clean. BABY WIPES WILL BE YOUR SAVIOUR! they are fantastic for cleaning up poops around the house. Also, make sure to cover your bird's cage every night. I use a thin sheet in summer, spring and Autumn as it is very hot here in Australia. In winter I use a thicker blanket when it gets cold. Here is a fantastic website for keeping pet cockatiels, the greatest starter bird! - www.cockatielcottage.net Hope this helped!

one thing I recommend for getting a bird, there is nothing wrong with getting a bird from a pet store, but oftin times those birds learn to be afraid of people. I would recommend getting a bird from a local bird rescue for a couple of reasons. 1. a rescue bird may not be adopted for years, since most people want, "le purbred purfecttt birb who comes for 4.99 in le pet store" 2. birds there can learn to bond with you much easier, since they have usually been with previous owners. now there will be lots of birds there who have been abused or neglected, who will not be so comfterble with people. but if you take care of them and love them enough, they can bond to you really well. 3. most rescue places are based on volunteer work, so by getting a bird and the supplies there, you can help the place open, therefore letting it save more birds. I would recommend this for people with more experence

I've been with birds/parrots since I was like 5 years. Now I have 14 parrots, and everything you said is true. The bond between you and your bird is very special. I hade two Sun conure's, but when of them died the other one got very depressed. But arter a While we buyed a amazon, and the conure and he got best friends, and the conure was no longer depressed(both of them was boys). Both of them was happy to have a new best friend. (I'm 12 years old)❤💞💗🐦
