I’m not sure if it fits the bill, but sometimes I feel that fast fashion and resell platforms are forming kind of a symbiosis. So in the beginning people bought it because it was cheap and accepted (maybe) that they were creating more waste. Now as the impact on our planet is more known, people might justify their purchases with the argument that they can just resell it and therefore don’t create waste.

Okay a bit unrelated but something that drives me CRAZY is when on vinted people tag their listings as “vintage” but then when I look at the tag in the photo it’s Urban Outfitters or Zara etc. VINTAGE MEANS SOMETHING WORDS HAVE MEANING OMG

People donate shein etc. to thrift shops to feel better about their over consumerism but the sad reality is that when people in thrift shops see that shein tag they skip the item instantly. All of these clothes will end up in a landfill.

What helped me is to avoid tiktok fashion trends altogether and instead go to youtube&twitter and look at individuals whose main focus is about fashion, but have that strong sense of their own style. They are aware of the trends and discuss it, but it mostly doesn't sway them to follow it. They put expression of self through their clothes and it inspires and motivates me to find my own sense of style. Doesn't matter if what they wear I personally don't like on myself. It's to really think about how to be my best self through my clothes. And in turn that makes me less affected to follow trends and more aware of what I want, what I end up buying and how long they'll last with me. It's not a perfect solution, but it's has done wonders for how I feel about fashion overall. We need to make ''strong sense of self'' trendy in some way? or even better be the standard. I also started to use a digital wardrobe app, to keep track of what clothes I already own and find new ways of styling them. It's really satisfying to me and makes me more aware of my own closet.

I'm convinced people buy into flashy trends, or just flashy pieces of clothing in general, asperationally. Then later they regret it because they don't actually like wearing skirts or whatever the case may be and then donate/resell things. As an example I'm a fan of Betsey Johnson shoes. They are absolutely unhinged in the best way possible. I've bought 2 pairs online that had never been worn. I would put money on someone having bought these hounds tooth bedazzled mules and then chickening out every time they wanted to wear them. I sometimes chicken out. The shoes are just too powerful.I think some people just need to admit they only wear brown and embrace it. There is no shame in being a head to toe brown person and not a bedazzled shoes person.

something I saw once on a video is thinking about at least five ways to style whatever you're considering buying with stuff you already have and if you can think of five or more outfits with that piece, then you can justify getting it. It's something I come back to whenever I'm thinking about buying something new and it helps especially when I think I'm being influenced onto something instead of buying authentically but it's also because I know what I like and dislike and how I want to present myself/what's genuinely me. I feel like if you don't know yourself and your style tendencies as well, you'll still be vulnerable to the trappings of consumerism no matter what

I feel like the thing is that you’re told you HAVE to wear the newest trends to fit in and be fashionable, but when they inevitably go out of style in 2-4 months, you’re suddenly ‘cringe’ and ‘stuck in 202_’ for having them in your wardrobe and still wearing them. Society basically peer pressures you into buying things and then bullies you into getting rid of them. What’s a must-have one year is an ‘embarrassment’ to wear/own the next year.

I think it's worth pointing out that often people sell at a loss because 1) time elapses without the item selling and you end up having to bring your prices down to give it a better chance of selling and 2) you're competing with the shop selling the item new, and people are more likely to want to buy it new than second hand (unfortunately).

Not only does finding these cheap quality, fast fashion items in the thrift store so upsetting when you’re trying to make the most with your money, BUT when people deliberately buy the nice quality items and upsell them on the resell sites.

Thank you for talking about this in this way. I know that some people don't have the money to buy really quality pieces and don't always want to/can't buy second hand. But since they are always on the defense in the comment sections they automatically shield the people that actually do most of the harm by spending way too much money on cheap clothing they don't need.

A thing that has a little tempted me recently is striped jumpers even though I've hated horizontal stripes forever. But I've seen the Sezane one on someone and fell in love somehow. I'm happy I waited with it because now I've seen this specific one on so many people it no longer feels special (that's my main beef with trendy items) and I've seen reviews of the item being itchy and losing shape or shrinking after washing. The funny thing is I didn't like it when I first saw it either, to me it went into the cursed horizontal stripes category in my head! Do I like it just because I saw it enough times on people I admire or did I really learn to appreciate it overtime? It's so hard to know with these things!

I have purchased a few high quality NWT items secondhand this year. I think a lot of ppl buy, feel guilty and then are happy to recover any amount of $ and sell at a loss.

Loved this video. I actually sold a lot of fashion fashion from the 2010s in 2018 and went on a big spending hault since then. I can't imagine how wild the re-selling market is now. Environmental impact aside, I stopped caring about trends and became more interested in my financial wellbeing.

My grandma takes me thrift shopping when I visit her as her treat. The problem is that the girls' section has just terrible quality shirts, just croptops, fashion trends, or fluffy sweaters left by snowbirds. I often go to the mens section to find casual wear that is good quality or something in more neutral colors

It doesn't help that every sort of major social phenomenon comes with a fast fashion collab (see barbie)

If a certain pattern or color is in I tend to try to find tights because realistically I will wear a pair of tights to shreds within a few months anyway. Not a perfect solution because tights shouldn't break so fast but better than entire jackets or dresses going to waste. And I have found countless ways to use damaged tights (making tops, armsleaves, socks, polishing shoes, in replacement of plastic bags to organise luggage and so much more).

i absolutely loathe going on depop and seeing loads of shein/primark/plt stuff! it’s infiltrated all the charity shops too. i like buying second hand or vintage so i can get some good quality items that just need a new home and are also at a lower price point than brand new- and are often unique or interesting pieces. buying fast fashion tat at a slightly lower price than brand new from the shop defeats the purpose for me personally.

A lot of these new with tag items that are key trends people will pick them up as retail arbitrage. Sourcing from auctions, unsold merchandise from liquidators, etc to resell for profit. That’s why you will see a lot of name brand with tags. Different resale platform release trend reports for sellers, then the market is flood with these items.

I found it so weird how there were so many new with tags pieces on vinted. I don't mind if I am getting a new piece for a lower price without supporting fast fashion brands, but I've also seen so many fast fashion items with tags being sold at a price very close to the original. Sorry, but I won't buy a 2nd hand fast fashion piece for almost its full price, if I can't return it. Especially when the platform adds the consumer protection fee and shipping, so the item ends up being the same price as the original price and sometimes more expensive than if you bought it on sale.

I hate the quiet luxury trend especially (unless it’s thrifted/vintage and reflects a personal style, and you actually wear it for years) because the pieces tend to be expensive, boring and of varying quality. People think it’ll make them look wealthy but generally the style looks indistinguishable from what everyone else is wearing.

While Dr. Martens boots are generally classic and trend-proof, the chunky sole styles did become trendy a couple of years ago. I had been on the lookout for a pair of secondhand regular docs for a few years but all I would ever find were the platform versions for insane prices. I caved and paid more than I intended to when I finally found a pair that fit my needs, even though it was a bit oversized. I have gotten a lot of wear of it though, so I guess it was worth the investment. But the resale market for those boots was insane.

A small part of this over all problem is online shopping taking over. Many of my local clothing stores do no carry a wide range of sizes and colors anymore. If one needs those they have to shop online which means they don't try them on. The clothes don't fit and then the person doesn't get them returned in time.

It would be fare to say my fasion sence has always benefitted the environment ( clothes can last decades😮), I was not even aware of fast fashion until I sub'd to you're channel (4000+ weldone). Take care Katie

I always wait for a while before buying a hyped item. Either I get over it or I still love it months later and then I can find it SH for cheap. I waited to get a denim skirt for at least 3 seasons. I finally got one that I like a lot. I also ALWAYS style new stuff with as much as I can from my closet to be sure it actually matches my vibe.

I can't speak for everyone but I know a specific person who keeps things with tags that were expensive deep in her closet for years until not only is it not trendy but it is no longer looking brand new even though it has the tags (cough cough loads of "quiet luxury" Zara cough cough) and partially it was the not wanting to throw money away. The other part is bodyshape. She is thin but petite and busty and most fashion brands do NOT cater to that demographic. And I think a lot of people also want the piece... how it looks on the model on the website but it arrives and it's simply not cut to look good on yours.

Don't know if anyone else is experiencing this but my step mom is very much a trend person (with some exceptions and some basics for her that she always keeps.) but this means when she is over it or wants to get rid of something she literally just gives me bags of clothes regardless of if it's clothes i would want. Legit just drops them off at my house and then it becomes my problem to donate/ deal with the clothes. I try and drop off what i can to my local shelters.

Pwrsonally i dont think the seller might be losing money, they couldve bought the item on sale and is selling for a higher price. 🤔 they would be losing time trying to resell for a slightly high price which i think isnt worth the hassle.

The secret is you need to make the trends follow you: Know what you like and wait till it's in fashion. E.g. I love maximalism. Thanks to Gucci, a few years ago the shops were full of frills, prints, textures, colours. I loved it, and am still buying the stuff on Vinted, now that the trend is minimalism and everyone is getting rid of ruffles. I also got some bright pink Ugg slippers which I will love as long as they last. Buying something just because it's in fashion is boring, but buying something because it's "you" is fun.

Gah, I'm really NOT into trends. I remember as a student, I literally spent like £3k at primark (my scholarship money lol) and after like 6 months I had nothing to show. That taught me a huge lesson. Whenever I have bought into trends, I've ended up giving them to my little sister a year later, she appreciates them but for how long? Now, I just don't buy trends. I know my style, I know my colour palette and I know I only want quality. So I prefer to spend good money on longevity. Hence, I have been told I look "coastal grandma", "old money" but really not intentional, I just know I'll wear these items for LONG because it's not trendy but also never goes out of style. I love Mules (I have Massimo Dutti and LP), I have worn them for YEARS, whether they become trendy again or not doesn't matter because they suit my feet really well. Trends truly are the worst.

a tip i liked is when you buy something ask urself: would i wear this for the entirety of this item's life? like until it literally falls appart and disintegrates. that can be 2 to 10 years or more depending on the quality of the piece. thinking of that has really helped me avoid impulse shopping c:

What you’re talking about is a huge problem, but also resellers buy things on end of season clearance and then mark it up. Like a dress that is normally $200 they found on clearance for 50 and then they sell it for 100. So a large percentage of them are probably not people buying an expensive trend and never wearing it but rather resellers selling leftover stock.

11:38 yes usually im not the biggest fan of leopard print in a lot of cases like fur jackets are just not my thing but i got this cardigan recently and the silhouette/shape is so nice plus the quality bcus its vintage as well as the more subtle brown colour - sometimes there are exceptions to the rule :)

I don' understand people selling new things with tags either, but I don't think there's anything wrong with being influenced. It doesn't matter if you liked sth first or after you saw it on someone else, one isn't better than the other and everyone is influenced one way or another. Just make sure you actually want to wear it before buying it, I guess.

I wanted to return an item I bought online but turns out I would pay more to return them than selling them on fb marketplace. It wasn't a trendy item and I should have checked the cost of return, but I wonder if cost of return comes into play. The shop I bought from is only online.

As a reseller I can’t say people buy second hand for vintage, lots of people buy fast fashion second hand (and a lot of that is brand new) as they don’t see it directly funding fast fashion, that’s nothing new. The vintage second hand market is separate

As an avid online second hand shopper, that is interested mostly original vintage stuff, all this is really annoying. I love fashion and yes sometimes I also fall for trends because there are fun. But I stopped shopping fashion first hand a while ago, since garment construction was better before and you can finde basic vintage items easily and cheap, where the same item would be much worse quality from H&M , Zara or Shein. And since fashion is cyclical, you can find a lot of items second hand and very cheap, that fit in a trend aesthetic. You may just spend a bit more time browsing, but I dont think its much different than browsing shein with like million of pieces. So what do we take from this, people will not buy your cheap fast fashion crap that doesn't even last one season. And just go buy trend pieces second hand, they have better price value ratio, and there is still to much second hand pieces landing in the trash because there aren't enough people buying second hand.
