In todays video, I give a run down on the specific care requirements for different genus of feather duster worms. These include Sabellestarte, Protula, Bispira, spirobranchus, Anamobaea, and Pomatostegus. The one mistake I made in the early years of keeping feather dusters was feeding preserved phytoplankton. After doing research, It was found that only live phytoplankton will keep feather dusters alive long term and prevent starvation. Aside from diet, I give the various water parameters that should be provided for these annelids. As well as proper flow, lighting, and other placement. I also provide information on indications that you are sustaining a good population of phytoplankton in the reef tank by seeing certain Hitchikers like clams and sponges.

DIP-X and Hydrogen peroxide. I got an online shipment of a variety of coral that was covered in hair algae. So I went pretty aggressive and double dipped everything including the feather duster. Glad I did. Got several bristle worms and a variety of other small pests. Good news is the dips did not seem to affect the feather duster at all. It was the first one to open up within about an hour of being placed in the tank.

The longest I had a feather duster was about 4-5 months before my pistol shrimp ripped it apart. I bought several over the years and they never lasted more than 2 months, however my first one I had the longest; I was dosing Algaebarns ocean magik daily so I’m wondering if that had any part in its long survival.

Very nice video young man. I just discovered you here on KZfaq and I was very impressed after the first few minutes. I appreciate your insights from more of a scientific side as opposed to that of a hobbyist. I might have missed it but I strongly recommend Reef Nutrition live phytofeast. I use it religiously with good results. I would like to culture my own but I simply do not have the space. Anyway, keep up the good work.

Thank you so much for the kind words! I agree reef nutritions phytofeast has a blend of roughly 6 different types of phytoplankton that is perfect for feather dusters. I found having a phyto culture saves a bit more money but you’re right it does take up space and requires more maintenance which can be a burden. Thank you so much for watching!

what about feeding zooplankton ? will that work ?

Unfortunately zooplankton tends to be on the larger side in the hundred microns range. Most feather dusters will prefer foods around 20 microns or lower.

Your video presentation volume kept switching from way too loud, to in many parts, way too soft even to the point of where I cannot even hear you when I didn't adjust the level slider.
