We take a look at the astral self monk and how it stacks up with the other monk subclasses available. Can it compete with the way of shadow, way of mercy or the way of the open hand monk?
"The astral self is a translucent embodiment of the monk’s soul. As a result, an astral self can reflect aspects of a monk’s background, ideals, flaws, and bonds, and an astral self doesn’t necessarily look anything like the monk. For example, the astral self of a lanky human might be reminiscent of a minotaur-the strength of which the monk feels within. Similarly, an orc monk might manifest gossamer arms and a delicate visage, representing the gentle beauty of the orc’s soul. Each astral self is unique, and some of the monks of this monastic tradition are known more for the appearance of their astral self than for their physical appearance.
When choosing this path, consider the quirks that define your monk. Are you obsessed with something? Are you driven by justice or a selfish desire? Any of these motivations could manifest in the form of your astral self."

An awesome character I would love to run-Take a Reborn race. Take Undead Warlock dip of level 1 or so. Then take Astral Monk aways up. The character died when the character and spouse was ambushed on the road. You are back from the dead and you continue the “covenant” of marriage after death as the ghost of you dead wife is your astral arms!! Your warlock aspects allow you to role-play two people (if G.M. is cool with it - Ghost and character) and then your attack, because of warlock levels, can be necromantic (you u do 6 levels of Undead warlock). By the way the form of Dread is simply your ghost wife… or a fusion of the two!!! A total Gothic use of the class 😊....my mind has a metric ton of character ideas, some that use subclass in strange ways..... for an odd varient of this idea....think mother and child....creepy dead kid with ghost mom that won't let go....or mother whose dead child does some creepy attacks ......

Take a feat like Skill Expert, and pickup double proficiency in Athletics. When you're using the Astral Arms, you use WIS instead of STR for skill checks, right? So then substitute one of the attacks for a Grapple and then move the target around. Also, if you are facing a target that has a high STR score, then Stun the target with your first attack, then Grapple with the second/third. Stunned targets automatically fail any STR or DEX saving throws, so it's an automatic Grapple followed by forced movement. Many monsters don't have proficiency in Athletics, so you should be able to maintain the Grapple if you need to (and why you want the double proficiency) in following rounds.

Also, you don't have to begin your turn by summoning the Astral Arms...instead start with a quick Stun, then summon the Arms as a bonus action so the Stunned target automatically fails the DEX save against the Astral Arms 10' radius AOE damage.

The 10' melee reach with the Astral Arms means you can stay out of *most* target's melee range, allowing you to move up, attack, and move away without drawing an attack of opportunity. Hit and Run!
