We take a look at the long range fiery monk, the Sun Soul. How does it stack up with the other Dungeons and Dragons monk subclasses available. Can it compete with the way of mercy, the way of shadow, astral self or the way of the open hand monk?

I've been sleeping on the Sun Soul monk for too long. They're actually really cool.

I use Protector Aasimar race with the Sun Soul Monk. The race gives me additional radiant damage when I use it, I can fly, and I'm resistant to radiant and necrotic damage. I have the light cantrip and I can heal once per long rest. It's a very devastating combination at level 11.

3:50 - half casters gain 3rd level spells at 9th level. If you spend 3 ki (as if 1 ki / level = 3rd level spell) you're dealing 8d6 damage ... which then has the same damage, range, and aoe as the fireball spell. Difference is radiant vs con save for no damage (with the opacity caveat) as opposed to fire vs dex save for half damage.

2:25 - this is a piece of evidence that monks are sorta treated as a martial form of warlocks.

4:27 - 4th tier melee combat is largely multiattack... if an ancient dragon were to engage with Sun Soul wis 20, 3 attacks = 30 self damage. this is actually fairly effective at getting into melee combat range with bruisers that will not be motivated to lay into the sun soul with multiattack, so the monk can more reliably stand its ground to use bonus action for added flurry / stun combo vs need to bonus action out of melee range... conditionaly good depending on what the team is facing in the 4th tier, but ya, not awesome.

Actually im a bit of a dnd noob but reactions are only once/round right? It says it uses your reaction to activate this ability when you get hit, so would it work against a multiattack at all after the first hit?

Admittedly, level 17 open hand ability is so OP that it overshadows most other classes, let alone other monk subclasses.

This subclass is a contender for worst subclass in the game. A base class monk using a quarterstaff for a 1d8 is better using no subclass features than this subclass is using its features. This is true with or without the Tasha’s upgrades. Trash. The damage type difference is also irrelevant after level 6 due to ki-empowered strikes, another base class monk feature. Radiant sun bolt is also written in a way that prevents it being used to attack as a bonus action without using ki. This means you can’t replace your normal martial arts bonus action unarmed attack with it.

Agreed, they need a rework, I think it'd be cool if they gave the Sun Soul cleric spells like how Eldritch Knight gets wizard spells.
