It's so awesome that for Bill he's just totally in the zone having a huge amount of fun and for us watching even those that blow glass ourselves it's like "this dude made a bargain with the devil there's no other way he can do that" hahah. Always a pleasure to see these demos this will be a worthwhile vid for centuries.

Always very nice to see the craftsmanship of a glass blower. Also very nice to see how the different molds are applied. Unfortunately, because of the Corona crises, I am now unable to make video recordings in the glassworks of the National Glass Museum in Leerdam (Netherlands), so I will have to do my addiction to seeing hot glass on KZfaq. Thank you for sharing this workshop.

I think jim Moore makes one and I think also Carlo dona does too. If essemce tools is still around they may be good to ask if you are in Europe.

Hi Cathie, here's an answer from Bill: "Ah! My octagonal ‘hand’ fin-mold! I made that very mold in 1982, before I could even competently make a tumbler into which to cram it: that’s how much I wanted to be able to make those wonderful 6 or 8-sided, lip-wrapped glasses I’d seen in the best Murano and Venice glass shops. That November I’d spent two weeks in Murano, cheerfully engaged in…well…what you might (ungenerously) call-I don’t know-INDUSTRIAL ESPIONOGE! But that’s another story… Anyway, the fin-molds I saw in various factories (yes factories: the days of many large and small-scale factories flourishing in Murano were to gradually and agonizingly end over the next couple of decades) were all ‘floor models’: they sat on the floor near the mouth of the furnace, and the maestro carefully lowered, then pushed, the soft glass doenward onto the mold. When I got back to NYC and immediately began making an 8-sided fin mold, I (yes, arrogantly) decided it would be much better to carry out the ‘octagonalizing’ procedure, at eye-level. Thus the handle. In retrospect, it was a poor choice: it’s more difficult to use. One not only has to keep the punty straight up and down; the same is true of the mold too. The only advantage is this: the glassblower has the best possible view of that magical, transforming moment that, in an instant, turns a pretty, but somewhat pedestrian little tumbler into a faceted, exceptional-looking, functional decorative arts object (I guess I still really like them: does it look medieval? Renaissance? Wiener Werkstatte? Danish Modern? How can it possibly look like any of those? Wow! What a design!). Now, Cathie, what was your question? Right! Where can I get a hand-held fin-mold? I don’t know. Jim Moore makes really nice ones, maybe he would put a handle on one, or you could do it yourself-if you’re ‘handy’, as they say. Thanks for the inquiry; I hope this helps! "
