The idea behind the concept of not wearing a watch to a black tie event is, that you shouldn’t have anything better to wait for than that particular event. Not wearing a watch to such an event is rather a matter of respect than a matter of look in my opinion...

Some guys here would argue that a screaming yellow gold Rolex Submariner is suitable with a tux! 🤣. I’d choose a Jaeger LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Jubilee in platinum.

David Niven is clearly using a wristwatch in the picture you show us, and it looks good on him. On the other hand David Niven always looked perfect in his style. I rarely have the opportunity to go to a ceremony that deserves to use a tuxedo, but when I have to look formal and elegant I choose to use my little vintage Omega Geneve ,1969, quadrangular and in yellow and white gold. With a black strap it looks lovely and terribly dapper.

Lot of love for Reversos in the comments. I love JLC, and especially the Reverso but I worry a little bit that some models might be a little too thick.

Actually I think white gold and platinum hits it even better, but I would agree with your choices. Watches like the JLC Reverso a nice alternative to the Cartier Tank as it also evokes the Art Deco era we most closely associate with the semi-formal style of the tuxedo.

Look, it’s very simple really... a tuxedo or as the more stylish would say, Dinner Suit... must have a holster for your Walther PPK and be worn with a Rolex Submariner. 👍

An often overlooked watch that I think will be iconic, is the nomos tetra (black dial/silver case), the art decò design of suck watch is thin enough to say "you notice, if you want to notice", which is quintessentially the spirit of black tie

Nice video, being a timepiece enthusiast is enough justification to wear one with a tuxedo. That way I think it showcases more of my interest and character rather than being a disgrace to the tuxedo. I think I'd invest in a nice pocket watch if I'm someone who often attends black tie events.

Agree Brian. You can wear a watch with a Tux, I mean James Bond did(Sean Connery a Rolex Sub and Daniel Craig an Omega Aqua Terra). Not sure if I’d go dive watch but all three of the watches you recommended are fine. I’d probably add a few Breguet and Blancpain models(yellow or white gold) and believe it or not I’ve worn a Rolex Explorer and looked fine. Keep up the great videos.

What about pairing the metal? Studs, Cufflinks etc with the watches.

Growing up in New England in the 70s, it was passed down to not wear a watch at Black Tie Events unless you were gifted it as a Groomsman by the host (inner circle) at his prior wedding and wished to acknowledge you were single to the ladies at his current functions. They tended to be engraved Cartier watches. 😉

My wedding is coming up and I want to accessorize with a nice clean looking watch that doesn't stand out to much but is timeless looking and classy. I'm wearing a classic black tux with a black bowtie. I've been thinking about the style watch and am pretty certain I'm thinking about going with black band.

I agree with a thin watch, my first choice is 1960 Vacheron Constantin gold case with black alligator band, 2nd is Movado silver case black face. Cell phones are far more distasteful at formal events

Firstly, thank for another great video. A nice dress watch looks best, PP, VC, ALS, JLC, Cartier or even a Cellini. Just don’t like a G-Shock (or equivalent) on the wrist of a gentleman wearing a tuxedo!

The Timex Metropolitan Skyline watch is a fine choice. Thin silver case, white face, and black leather strap. It's certainly a great affordable dress watch that pairs perfectly with any black tie ensemble.

I wear my fathers 1962 - 14k gold Omega Seamaster Deville H.M.S. watch. Super thin, black band, very classic.

In the post James Bond world I suppose it is acceptable, but only subtle per the criteria you correctly layed out. I would rather wear a Tissot that meets your criteria than a Submariner with a Tux. Any watch with a metal bracelet simple would clash a d ruin the look that the tuxedo brings.

I really disagree with gold anything with a tux. A tux is very monochromatic - B&W everything. Gold studs would look very out of place, ridiculous in fact Id go so far to say. I feel the same about the watch. Gold for a watch is passable but I strongly feel it should be silver.

I understand both views but I'm going with no watch. Simplicity is style.

You can wear tasteful watches as listed, but I do not think you should. Three main reasons: 1. Evening events are having fun events and you should not be thinking about time, you should be enjoying 2. Wristwatches are on the casual side and are in confrontation with formal nature of evening events 3. Wristwatches are staple of businesswear and as such do not belong in other settings, not only in more formal, but even in more casual setting

A leather band dress watch is fine nowadays

Brian, while I don't get to wear my tux as often as I'd like, I have found it necessary to have a watch while on a cruse. I don't wear a wrist watch, but do wear a classic pocket watch with chain on my waist coat. I found it necessary to do so because of the ships scheduling of entertainment events. any other time, NO. Nothing says more about a man than at the end of the evening who is relaxed with his Lady, jacket off, tie undone, Burbon in one hand, cigar in the other and in a comfortable chair without any of the worlds cares and concerns. hope you approve and understand.

On paper - no you should not wear a watch with a tuxedo. And there are events where I would not do it. The main argument (beyond not being rude by caring about the time) is the same reason you don’t want a swanky tie. The dress is all about what the women are wearing. Men are not supposed to stand out they are supposed to not draw attention from the women. Sexist? Dated? Yes, but that’s it. Personally more often than not I reach for my JLC Gold Reverso.

Style "rules" have changed greatly over the years. Wear a watch and keep it discreet and you'll be fine. MAYBE 1 in a million know the style rules if wearing a watch with a tux anyway. I wore my stainless DateJust with a tux and no one commented or even cared. If someone comments that you shouldn't be wearing a watch they are being kind of an ass anyway.

I think the JLC Master Ultra Thin would be a good choice or the Piaget Altiplano or even the Zenith Elite Classic. For a smaller budget although it has a small second I think the Nomos Orion is nice and they can be very discrete.

funny, i agree with adam exactly... i looked at my fitbit and tohught, if this was thinner it wouldn't look bad with a more modern tux... if i was going to dress up classically i wouldn't wear anything modern but a pocket watch fits

I've once read that black faces are the go to. White watch faces are more appropriate for day wear especially in formal occasions.

just wear what comfortable. just don't wear a loud watch. also the key note here is that there is a presumptuon that being at a black tie event means that everyone is up up social bracket of society. in most cases this isnt the case and more rarity than commonality. if anytbing watched have formed a good discussion point amongst randoms. especially when seated in those randmosed tables of guests 😅

A SIMPLE thin no complications, black leather strap gold/ rose gold should be OK

The Vacheron - though personally yellow gold is not my bag - is actually a perfect choice here. The simplicity of the dial with no other complications and the thinness make this as tasteful as it gets. If I were a Rolex guy (I'm not) then a Cellini would be the only choice. The Subby should NEVER even be worn with a suit let alone for black tie. Bond wears the Sub/Planet Ocean/Seamaster because he may be attending a formal event and then have the need to do a much more adventurous activity at the drop of a hat. I love the Bond series but that doesn't make it correct. I wear a vintage Omega from my birth year, black dial, no date, 35mm case, manual wind on a custom smooth leather strap with the Omega deployant, and I love it.

Consider also social situation and surroundings. To use your example, arriving to a party finding no one wearing a watch would then suggest to go without.

I personally think tuxedo's look great with watches.

Although I save mother of pearl and platinum studs and cufflinks for white tie, and although I play with stones and enamels for my black tie studs and cufflinks (specially when wearing the warm weather variant with an ivory jacket), the metal for those is always white gold or platinum, as I really don’t think yellow and rose gold suit me and my preferences. That said, my watch always matches my studs and cufflinks metal (at least in colour). I choose to bend the rules a bit and either wear my Rolex DateJust 1601 with jubilee bracelet, white dial, and fluted bezel (inherited from my grandfather), or my Rolex Date 15200 in 34mm with a grey dial, smooth bezel, and oyster bracelet ( a present from my mother), or my Air King 14000 in 34mm with oyster bracelet, smooth bezel, and black dial (present from my father). Why do I do that? Well, for me it looks as feels great, and also I love to wear those watches because all three have incredible sentimental value to me and are attached to special memories, so I love to build even more sweet memories wearing them. They’re also practical, and beautiful, and understated, the DateJust being the most formal of the bunch. Leather straps don’t go well with my skin as well, so I love the metal bracelets. I avoid my GMT Master II and my Explorer 114270 though, with a tuxedo, as they’re too casual for formal wear even by my rule breaking standards.

I have always thought that Movado was a great choice. Very minimalistic and reasonable priced. Especially for those of us that rarely attend functions that require a tuxedo very often. But, I do definitely like the Patek and the Constantine if your wallet can accommodate.

So no metal bracelets, right?

I would wear a watch with black tie. I would wear only a pocket watch with white tie. But as you say, if I had been invited to a white tie event by the Queen I would wear no watch, because why would I need to know the time!

Nice watch there. A watch is fine at a black tie event. Just simple Roman numeral, which some precious metal accent and black strap with no date would be perfect.

With satin peak or shawl lapel, cufflink, pocket square, cummerbund, Shirt studs, bowtie and suspender or waistcoat, not to mention these shiny patent tuxedo shoes. I believe there is really enough going on to differentiate yourself form other already well-dressed men who wear a suit and necktie. Sometimes, enough is enough. In my opinion, you do not need a exceptionally tasteful watch when you wear a full-on tuxedo set. There are plenty going on already ......

Actually, Alan does not say it is ok. He says look first for a gold pocket watch and if you must or insist on wearing a wristwatch then these are the considerations. This is not meant as encouragement or permission, it is a recognition that some men will violate the rule and if you do then this is the least tasteless way to do so. If you choose is not permission. It implies that Alan is oppressed to the wearing of a wristwatch. Alan wrote in very plain English, and it is error to assume he is agnostic. There is an old saying. English is a tricky language til you get the hang of it.

First, I'd much rather see my guest arrive on time wearing a watch, than late without it. Second, Why only yellow or rose gold? My own dress watch is yellow gold, but I'd love to have one in white gold, platinum or even a refined stainless steel design to wear with a pair of sapphire/white gold guilloche cufflinks and plain white gold studs. Rules for a formal wristwatch, just as you put forward: trim and slim, subtle, nothing that you would ever wear to the gym or to play golf. For my money, no gems, save a stone set in the crown. Third, Make mine a Georg Jensen.
