I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again a million times: this is the best channel on KZfaq for watch enthusiasts. The passion is clear, the humour is laugh out loud funny and the bright and airy production is bang on the money. Each episode is a hoot from beginning to end. Cheers Russ! I hope the wife approves of my comment. Cheers!🍻😆

I'm not a huge fan of rolex probably because of your same reasons, but the explorer is absolutely one the most beautiful watch in their catalogue and I'd love to own one, for that first reason I wouldn't sell it even more if it has a connection to a family member and memories in general associated to it, that's a keeper

I sold my Casio DW660 which I bought in 1995 on joining the RAF. Had it as a daily-wear for 10 years and eventually sold it for pennies because it needed a new strap. I wasn't really 'into' watches back then, and didn't realise I could replace the strap, cover, etc... I wish I could have that watch back...

I actually feel some regret about getting this far into this hobby. I used to be content with just two watches: a Seiko solar chronograph that I wore to anything indoors and a Casio Pro Trek that I wore outdoors. The Seiko broke one day and over the last 5 years, I discovered automatics, Swiss watches, GMTs and somehow found justification to spend thousands on watches that are less accurate than a $10 Casio from Walmart. I sold the Pro Trek more than 3 years ago and just bought another one back, but this one has Multi-Band 6. I think it's time to get back to basics and reclaim some sanity with this hobby.

My biggest regret was not getting into quartz (digital) watches sooner! I'd started with old manual wind / automatics, progressed to new ones, but still shunned quartz watches, especially digital ones. Now, the bulk of my collection are quartz watches and my daily wear is a G shock. I now appreciate more the tech behind how quartz watches work, and how they brought wristwatches to the masses.

”Brought wristwatches to the masses”? Not really 😅 Everyone had a watch on their wrists before quartz era. There was no other alternative in those days.
@plektosgaming
@plektosgaming 12 күн бұрын
@@janelavie4115 The issue was that we were suffering with basically tiny cheap wind up alarm clocks on our wrists. Wind and set it daily. Usually some cheap Timex or similar that wasn't water resistant (not really) and didn't like being banged around very much. But we did know the time. Quartz, beat it up and forget about winding it - it was the reason we all bought one. Set the time once a week and on look - it's got some waterproofness so the rain doesn't ruin it. :) What quartz brought was reliability and survivability without the cost of a "real" watch.

As long as you're undecided about the Explorer, just hold onto it. No need to be hasty. It's practically money in the bank. God forbid the day comes you might NEED to sell it, but if you're not totally in love with it, might come in handy. If you firmly decide to keep it, once the little MWC is old enough to notice, you should wear it all the time so that he identifies it with you, and when you hand it down it will really feel like "Dad's watch."

Great, versatile watch, and if I were to go down to one watch, that would be it. But if you don’t see yourself wearing it regularly, sell it. A top video Russel. The only watches that I re bought that I can remember are the F-91W (I misplaced it, got another one then found on the same day it but I will still keep its sibling). I already had the the G-Shock 5610 non 'U' version with the EL back light that had been with my through various hospital procedures and surgeries over the years but still decided to get the 'U' LED backlight version with arguably improved functional updates. I'm keeping them both one for sentimental reasons and the new one for a brilliant tool watch G-Shock wear. Maybe I should take that offer of therapy up. Thanks for sharing.

I am considering a step up in value for my next watch with various options (Doxa Sub 200t, Longines Zulu, Rado Captain Cook even up to a Sinn U50). Well the Explorer is the one Rolex, that I want. I mean I really want it. It is to me the most beautiful Rolex one can buy (in my opinion way better than a Daytona or a Sub), it is a toolwatch but you also could wear it at a wedding or everytay in office, for a swim, for vacation or .... whatever. To me it never looks out of place (or what the watch community refers to a GADA watch). I did not yet pull the trigger because other stuff I want is also expensive and I am not a rich guy in any shape or form. No big surprise that I agree with your wife... it is a keeper for sure. Hiya Russ! First time commentor - I found your channel via JOMW and the review of the Origin. Your videos are fun, I enjoy them! My regrets have stemmed from buying disconinued Seikos. Buying a used SKX can be a minefield, and a couple of times what looked like a very well presented watch turned out to be a poorly reassembled non original watch out of the Philippines. I've then associated the bad taste of paying too much for a watch not worth the asking price with the watch itself, meaning I don't wear it, and it sits in the box reminding me of it. A hard lesson, but a valuable one.

Great topic and very well presented MWC. I would probably normally suggest selling the Explorer given you are not wearing it, but prices are not as strong as they were say two years ago, so a more prudent position might be to hold onto it and sell at the top of the next 'crazy time'. This also gives you the time to do some serious thinking on what you would get in its place.

Hey Russ great video. Full disclosure I’m not a big fan of what Rolex represents and how they do business these days either. That being said I respect the history and that watch should be worn if you are going to keep it. I would sell it. Take the proceeds and carefully choose something more in line with your sensibilities, and somewhat iconic from a brand with history- worthy of being passed down. You can still look at the new watch and trace its lineage directly to your grandfather, remembering him and how much he inspired you.

@@user-sx2gj9tp3b Agreed. At the time I had very little choice however as I needed the money for unforeseen expenses... I immediately knew after I did it that I had messed up. Regardless, I would advise others to never do what I did.

I've bought and sold many watches and have been able to buy a number of Rolex watches at retail. I'd never sell any of them. A Rolex is defintely a watch you don't need to wear. Keep it. As usual the wife is spot on!!

I don’t think you could be a watch collector without having some buying and selling remorse. In my case more the buying 😢 I too got a Flighty (thanks TGV), but like you, sold it not long after (for a profit mind you!). I also got the Bulova Lunar Pilot (far too big), and I’ve bought a G-shock G7900 twice and sold both (again too big). I can see a pattern emerging here! However, I think I’m fortunate that there isn’t a watch I’ve moved on that I regret doing so. Yet!! 😂

Keep it for the very reason you bought it, a clear lineage to your grandad. Perfect piece to pass down. Plus if the s**t hits the fan with your kids/grandkids they can always flog it to get out of a sticky situation. Rolex hold decent value…Win win😂

Hello, dont do anything to fast. Change the staps, I do that all the time. Use a very tooly strap on the Explorer like a Cordura with a nice buckle. Try some leather on the Grand Seiko, nothing shiny. but the Sinn can go. (I like Sinn but the Doxa is here now)

I have the 214270 mk2 for 6 years now, since then i bought few other watches like omega, grand seiko and Tudor, I don’t wear my Explorer that much now, however every time i put it on I know it’s my exit watch. I always think watches with sentimental value deserve a place in a collection, your wife is wise, listen to her 👍🏻

Two reasons I’d hold off selling. Firstly, tastes change. You might fall out with it and come back around. If it’s too much bling, get it off the bracelet. Secondly, and maybe this is a me thing, but when I buy another watch, sometimes it makes me appreciate another watch in my collection more. No idea why, but it happens all the time! And if it doesn’t happen in the next few years, well then maybe it is time to sell.

I have resisted buying watches for people I love who aren’t into watches, and have decided instead to buy and wear watches for people I’ve lost as a reminder of them. Quite comforting, actually; and no gift receipt necessary!

Regarding the Explorer I think you answered your own question in the way you reference it. The fact it is a Rolex is incidental, if your Grandfather had an omega you would have got one of them. Its not a “flex” as the youth would say, it’s a memorial/tribute. Definitely a keeper 🥺

I`m afraid we have a different view regarding the SNA411. It`s a great entry level piece for a lot of people interested in the hobby but not willing to spend a lot. I`ve had mine (from the previously mentioned gentleman`s recommendation) and I still love it. You definitely need to like the busy style but if you do, go for it without regret.

For me, a GS is a GS when it has a Hi-Beat. I'm not selling my car to have one but some day it'll be in my collection. I've got a Presage Cocktail Time that I absolutely adore but hardly wear. It's sitting there in my watch box looking absolutely beautiful but it's not more than a once a year wear. I still adore it but am conflicted.

My main regret/learnings is to not have more than one genre or type of watch. You'll always end up with a favourite then the others become redundant. Or at least thats how it works for me. The whole 'I need a daily wear diver, a smarter diver, a beater diver, a mid range diver, one for actually diving and one for when I'm probably not diving but might do'. Gets a bit much. In the end you wear your favourite. So for me now its a single watch only of any type or genre, if I want to buy something new I tell myself I have to sell the existing one before buying its replacement. That pretty much always stops me in my tracks and the few times it hasn't its made me really consider what I'm doing so I don't make a mistake or do it for the instant gratification.

I researched the Baltic Aquaschape GMT after seeing them talk about Baltic on About Effing Time. I bought the blue/ green bezel with the needs of rice bracelet. Love the watch and it kept me from killing my fund to purchase the watch I really want. An Oysterquartz Day-Date in yellow gold. It’s an uncommon watch with a history that’s quite interesting. To me the PRX looks more like an Oysterquartz Copy than a Gerald Genta “inspired” watch.

I bought a Cartier Santos Medium (35mm) because of Evan (@YoureTerrific). It's been 2 years and it is in my constant wearing rotation between my Explorer I and IWC Mark XX. The hilarious thing is that he ultimately sold his and made a video about it, and I was watching that video while watching my own Santos. :D

Great video as usual. I just received my titanium Bel Canto in Cielo. It's gorgeous and I haven't taken it out of the box. All of a sudden I have this weird feeling that I'm wearing a watch that is more expensive than any I've bought before and I drive downtown and see tent cities and homeless people everywhere and now it feels so wrong. So I think it's going on Chrono24. While I love automatics I find myself grabbing my Citizen Promaster Diver titanium that I don't care if I'm wearing while doing a brake job or oil change. I love that watch. I also love my Lorier Neptune and Seiko Capt. Willard. Regrets, I've had a few.

These days when I ask my wife her opinion on a watch purchase she gives me her honest opinion, but follows it up with "I'm not the one buying and wearing it though." I take this as her being a bit tired of me asking 😅, but also that she doesn't need to like a watch for me to like it. I don't see why the same advice wouldn't also apply to me selling it. On a personal note though, I probably wouldn't sell a rolex right now. Prices have dipped on the secondary market. Might as well hang onto it for now.

I confess I regret buying a Seiko Prospex Flightmaster for around 650 £, didn't like the confused looks, and time synchronizing rarely worked. Sold it and bought a Tissot Seastar 1000 Chronograph, which I also regret for its somehow ugly bezel 🤔 Found my collection now (it's a journey, isn't it?) 🧡 Fantastic show again Russ! Cheers from Bremen 👋

The explorer really depends on your feelings towards it. I had a op 41 and found that I wasn't wearing it mainly because of the way the mail end links made it wear long. I put the money back into the planet ocean 39.5, superb fit for us 6.5 inch guys.
