In contrast with how they treated matilda as a character, Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman treated Mara Wilson incredibly well as her mom was dying of cancer. DeVito even made sure her mom was shown a rough cut of what they had filmed before she had died

Another big difference from the book: at the end of the book, Matilda actually does lose her abilities. As it turned out, she was only able to do so because she wasn't being academically challenged in Miss Honeys class, so her brain had to make up for it somehow. But that all stopped once she was transferred to a higher, more appropriate grade, because now for the first time in her life, she's actually struggling, instead of having her smarts go to waste.

Miss Honeys house is very different from the book. The main difference being that there is literally nothing in there besides a small camping stove, and two wooden boxes. Matilda didn't decide to help her just to get justice for Miss Honeys father. She also did it because Miss Honey needed serious help. There's a whole bit that mentions that the Trunchbull told her that now that she's an adult, she has to start paying her back for everything she did for her. The only money she had was a pound a week. The Trunchbull made her sign a paper that would redirect all of her paycheck directly into her bank. ...only now do I realize in all likelihood the Trunchbull did that because the fathers will was ironclad, in that Miss Honey got everything after he passed, and she couldn't touch it. So she stole Miss Honeys salary.

First off: at the time they filmed this, they actually were husband and wife. So what they did for the hat scene was put on a harness under the suit he's wearing, that connects to the hat, so when she tries to pull it off, he's holding it on with his whole body. So when you see her cutting the hat off in the next scene, she's actually cutting the wires from the harness off of the hat. The shot of the mom backflipping off the table wasn't her, it was a stunt double. And as for the cream tarts, what they did was set up miniature catapult seesaws, put a tart on one end on them, and essentially send them flying.

This author also wrote James and the Giant Peach. James lived with two abusive aunts. They were killed by the peach 🍑. We love stories like this as children. We love tales that reek with gore. We love extremes of good and bad behavior because it’s easy to recognize as children. We love evil characters because they always get what they deserve. The goodies always get rewarded.

In the book, it explains that Miss Phelps (the librarian) thought about talking to the Wormwoods, but eventually decided she didn't want to get involved, it wasn't her business. The way a lot of people feel when casually noticing abuse. In the musical, every time Miss Phelps brings up her family, Matilda either lies or changes the subject.

I feel like Ronald Dahl and Don Bluth exist on the same creative beliefs. Don Bluth said something along the lines of you can show children the worst sides of life in media as long as it ends in a happy ending. Ronald Dahl’s books always feel that way to me.

5:52 She did and Matilda told her her parents don't really care what she does, but Mrs phelps just decided that it was best not to get involved with other peoples children. I think that's why she suggested that Matilda get a library card so that she wouldn't have to cross a busy high way and crowded streets by herself every day, guess she figured that would be safer for her. Of course the counterargument would be that if Matilda continues to go to the library every day she'll be under constant adult supervision

I loved the book and the movie “Matilda” when I was a kid. I looked up to Matilda, and I still do. I was inspired by her intelligence, love for reading, and telekinetic powers (who doesn’t want that?). I wanted to be smart like her and fight injustice as she did. Plus, Miss Honey is one of my educational inspirations.

I think the reason kids love this movie so much- I know I did- is that it gives us something evil to stand against that’s not based on misunderstandings like most school stories. People want to see a full hero’s tale with a villain they love to hate, most little kids find it harder to appreciate stories with more than one side to things.

I truly connected with this film when i was a little girl. i experienced bullying in school and neglect at home so reading all kinds of books helped me overcome all the bad stuff happening around me, and I actually had a superpower which was my memory. I could easily memorize an entire book after reading it twice. Teachers chose me to give speeches all the time and i received a lot of diplomas for being a top student. Sadly, i lost my fantastic memory during high school, and reading became a task more than a fun activity. I still read a lot but can't retain new information. It's a shame. 🥺

My first grade teacher was a nightmare. We could only go to the bathroom during recess, she always yelled at us, and I felt like she hated me. Actually, my 2nd grade teacher was awful too. I remember it vividly: I was trying to spell “said” but kept putting “sayed”. We had to turn in the paper to go to recess. She looked at my paper, and told me it was wrong and to change it. She never corrected me. So I kept doing it again wrong and giving it back, and she said “No. Do it again.” I don’t remember how many times I did it until I got it right. Once she also shamed me in front of the whole class because she was giving out paper for coloring, and it was all different colors(they were darkish colored paper, blue, purple, green etc). She was going around asking each student what color they wanted. I remember thinking, if I get a colored paper, anything I draw won’t stand out as nicely as on a light colored paper. So when she got to me, I asked for peach. She said “PEACH?! You get nothing.” And she went on giving everyone else their papers. She eventually gave me a white piece of paper, but since then I fucking hated her.

Lol. Matilda isn't adopted, no way they'd let those people adopt a kid. I also doubt they'd want to adopt a kid, I don't think they wanted another kid, or particularly liked kids besides their son Michael, and only because he's so much like them. I think Matilda, Little Monsters, The Witches (another movie based on a Roald Dahl book), and The Goonies, are some of my favorite kid movies from late 80s to mid 90s. P.S.: I went to the library like a year and a half ago to get a library card so I can borrow digital books, before that I think I went to donated books a handful of times, and before that when I was in college.
