I love how even in the second chapter, although "less brutal", it still is a rape scene. Even in his own version, that was supposed to act as a statement of his innocence, it's still painfully obvious that he's at fault. He is so clueless about it because of the era he was raised, and the entitlement it gave men over women that had to live as their property/ possession. It didn't matter if a woman was noble and rich or a peasant, nor did it matter if the man was a man of God or a Knight. As was claimed in the movie, only power mattered. I also adored, how very small and subtle the changes in the narration were, yet they still reshaped the whole meaning of the events. This was the result of amazing directory choices and impeccable acting by everyone. This movie certainly feels like a classic and it's a shame that Jodie was not nominated for an award for it.

Yes!! The first scene was almost more conflicting than the second to be honest. Because from his twisted perspective, the lines were so much more blurry. She still says no the whole time, she still fights and tries to get away. But she giggles and laughs and moans with pleasure throughout all of it. They do a good job of making her SOUND like she WANTS IT and ENJOYS IT even while she's protesting and fighting and being held down. And that is a really fucked up thing to watch and try to grapple with. It left me feeling really gross and uncomfortable, which only intensified once I realized that that was the POINT, that that was how HE saw that encounter. Ugh. The second one was hard to watch for much more obvious reasons. But it was really impressive how they could create such intense discomfort in me during both scenes, for different reasons and with different emotional contexts, but with the same lines and script pretty much. Very impressive. Even though it wasn't fun to watch. 🤣 Jodie definitely did amazing in this. She absolutely deserves recognition for this role! I'm glad Help is at least getting some attention and praise!

keep in mind that this is a movie taking a lot of liberties. Afaik IIRC le gris was widely seen as guilty, and the fact a dual happened was considered a failure of system and launched a reform of it all.

After watching this movie 5 times it finally dawned on me that Marie is pregnant with Le Gris's child. That might be why she defends him. Le Gris was probably having an active affair with Marie which we never see in this film. Because maybe she was a passing fancy of Le Gris who, in his way was thinking 'if he cant have Marguerite he could have Marie.' Notice how Le Gris also give hints to Marie's husband about not being able to "perform". Now how would Le Gris know that?By the way she looked at him during the party and the fantasy he had, I feel he was recalling sleeping with Marie after the party; though in his fantasy he was hoping for Marguerite to be at the door. Marie probably told him. But then again she told Marguerite about her problems in bed. My final reasoning for thinking Marie was also pregnant with Le Gris's child was the look of sheer devastation at his death which meant he would forever be marked a rapist. If anything I bet Marie was waiting on her husband to die so she could marry the father of her child ,that being Le Gris. I feel like the account of Marie is something missing here.Maybe it's part of the directors cut.

You have a very good point. She probably got pregnant for Jacques. But it doesn't change the fact that Marie denied the crime that had happened to Marguerite and she did nothing at all to stand up for her. She should have, and that still goes to show that Marie was an absolute despicable bitch and a traitor towards Marguerite. Marie to me just seemed like she became very jealous of the lady Marguerite. Jealous that Jacques was mostly interested in Marguerite and not her.

31:25 Jean insisted on a Trial by Combat, which was very, very rare at this time. If a normal trial had produced no clear evidence one way or the other, I think it would have been ruled inconclusive and noone would have died. However, by the beliefs of the time, a trial by combat invokes Gods will. God will grant victory to the one speaking the truth. So if Jean loses, then clearly the accusation by Marguerite must be false, and she will be burned at the stake for the crime of perjury. This was the last sanctioned trial by combat in France, and would never have happened unless Jean insisted on going that route, so he is taking a massive risk with both his own and Marguerites life.

This is the first time I ever saw Jodie, and while this didn't make me the mega fan I am today (that came a year later,) this performance is one of her most raw and powerful. How she and Adam Driver were ignored for major award nominations in this is absolutely beyond me, they carry this film on their backs, perhapts Adam a little less so than Jodie. But it is amazing to see what can happen when the right project is given to the right person.

Kelsea, thank u for the reaction, I enjoyed reliving this film, which I quite liked in the first place. It was a shame that this film didn't achieve a commercial success. Apart from Jodie, I mostly watched this film because of Ridley Scott, loved his Kingdom of Heaven. Although come to think of that, Kingdom of Heaven also lost money big time 🤭 It was courageous of them to make a film retelling the same story three times from different perspectives, I think it worked pretty well. Naturally I first see Jean de Carrouges as the main character and sided with him, but in the second chapter, I was like "Ok maybe De Gris got a point", until the rape scene, his POV was pure bullshit. No games was played like that. Just like u, I also wondered if De Gris just get used to playing games and really believe himself to be innocent. But NO, I think he knew what he did. People are jerks, I've met lots of those jerks. People will find every excuse, even alter their own memories, so that they can believe themselves to be good and justify whatever shit they do. Only very few people are brave enough to look a bit closer at their real self, let alone admitting it to others. This is also one of the few films that armour actully works 🙄. The combat scenes, especially the duel was depressing, panicking, and tiresome, which I totally loved. Jodie also starred in The White Princess, the succsesor sequel of The White Queen. That was when I first knew about this talented actress. And later I was very amazed by her acting in Killing Eve, cause the two characters were so different, didn't feel like the same person. This film, The Last Duel, has more of that The White Princess vibe, but when I see Jodie, I think Villanelle. That character has been engraved on Jodie's face for me, I think forever!!! 🤣

I knew what the film was about prior but still decided to go the cinema to watch it as my first one since all the lockdowns . A tough watch and well acted overall but Jodie's portrayal and the way she was able to adapt her performance shows that she can do anything exceptionally well and it's a credit to her that she was able to shine despite the subject matter. As this was filmed based on true events I'm glad I did no live during this era of women being considered nothing more than a possession. The world has come a long way but some elements of the film still exist in today's society which is awful. I was disappointed that Jodie never got an oscar nomination for this role, I thought that it may have had to do with the subject matter, I'm not sure. Happy that Jodie's performance in Help has provided her with her 5th BAFTA lead actress nomination for her role as Sarah. Jodie finally gets to perform live in the West End in London with Prima Facie, it's unfortunate that I can't get to see her do that being in the wrong country and it starts in 10 days time . Great reaction as always Kelsea, and I look forward to your next Killing Eve reaction.

I understand if you wouldn't want to but even if you skip the rape scenes, I highly recommend rewatching this movie. I noticed so much more nuance and slight differences on the 2nd and 3rd watches between the three POVs and it made it me that much more impressed, especially by Jodie. Her facial expressions and line deliveries in each POV are so amazing because you know she had to portray herself as the man perceived her from their deluded POV. And then when you see her actual experience, it's just illuminating. The scene where Jean and Jaques 'make amends' at the party where Jodie has the interesting hairdo is a perfect example of this. Just. Her. Face. I love her so much. The TALENT! And Adam Driver is probably my favorite male actor on the scene at the moment. If Jodie had a male counterpart in my heart (which, let's face it, no one can truly compare), he would be it. I know this is a Jodie stan channel, but I have to give credit. He is superbly talented and I make sure I watch everything he's in. Marriage Story and Paterson are two that I would definitely recommend. And if you're a star wars fan, he's the best thing about the new star wars movies.

Oh I totally agree! I got to watch a lot of it a few more times throughout editing so I've seen all the scenes multiple times at this point, but I do think it would be a worthy experience of its own to watch it again outside of the editing context. All those tiny little details are so well done. Adam is great! I don't think this was my favorite of his performances but it's probably partly because I hated his character lol. I thought A Marriage Story was SPECTACULAR. I haven't heard of the other one though! And I've only seen bits and pieces of one of the new star wars! I'll have to keep an eye on him! Oh, and this is definitely not a Jodie Stan account! I just so happen to adore her and have a lot of subscribers that adore her because of the Killing Eve series! Nice review Kelsea, I watched this film in the cinema. There was hardly one in the place. Such a shame but it was fantastic. Ridley Scott the director knows how to make an historical epic, it's a pity the studio released it at the same time as Dune and the Halloween films, plus the pandemic had a impact on the revenue this film lacked on its release. On his interview Ridley was talking about how he wanted Jodie in the lead role. He said he watched Killing Eve and thought the series was great. Also after the film was finished he was so impressed with Jodies performance that he said she is the best Actress he had worked with in the last decade and she will dominate in the industry for years to come. The acting was great by all and I'm sure it will become a classic film in years to come. Thanks again Kelsea.

I wanted to take the time to comment on this viewing because I really enjoyed the film. It can be disturbing to see and re-watch certain same scenes 3 times in a row, but I find it relevant in this case. The perfect example is the kiss scene, in common with all the protagonists and I find that the subtleties are really well done, in the reactions of each character. When I first watched this film, I first found Carrouge to be a good lord, then I saw the "good side" of Le Gris. Rape itself, even in LeGris' version, is still rape. It doesn't matter that it seems a little more accepted by Marguerite, it doesn't matter that one feels that she is "seeking" to get LeGris' attention, nevertheless she refuses and it therefore remains an assault. The degree of denial is irrelevant, and that is what this version of the story shows. Of course, the rape is confirmed in this horrible scene from Marguerite's version. I remember being breathless during the whole scene. I wanted to get up from my seat and kill this man who was attacking Marguerite (and who was abusing Jodie - we don't abuse Jodie u_u lol). It's hard to watch. Just as hard to realize how little importance women had at that time. These are goods, objects that one possesses and the offense is not directed towards her but towards the possessor, her husband. What is perhaps the most difficult is to hear reasoning about certain discourses that are so close to what we can still hear today. In our countries but not only. Women's rights are slow to change. The whole final part, from the moment she learns about the rape from her husband, until the start of the fight, is really very well done. I find all the dialogues really relevant, the points of view, etc. Jodie is as always extraordinary in poignant moments. In one scene, she succeeded in showing both her strength and her nobility, but also her doubts and her fragility. One of the best scenes for me is when she learns that she can end up burned at the stake if her husband loses the duel. What would she have wanted different? She did not know that it was the cost to pay in case of defeat. She wanted a denunciation but she never asked Carrouge for a duel. It was an opportunity for him to show off and get revenge. She only wanted justice. By his choice, he puts the life of his wife, the victim, at stake. One of the very good scenes is that of Marguerite with her mother-in-law (Dasha yes lol) at the end of the film. I find all the talk there interesting. Because I understand this woman's choice, I understand what she is saying to Marguerite, even if it is unfair. She has her reasons and at that time, of course, many women were raped. But they were not necessarily of noble blood. Silence was in order. Because the remedy was too expensive. Does this justify being silent? I think the question makes real sense. We see all this from our Western eyes and obviously this must not go unpunished. But what would we do in the place of these women whose lives, even those of their children, are at stake? We may hate these two men, who are unhealthy each in their own way, we hope that Carrouge wins. This is not out of favouritism, but because we fervently hope that Marguerite does not pay an even higher price. The movie ends as it began. Only the power of men counts. The duel is won by Carrouge and once again, and once the relief has passed, Marguerite serves as a trophy. There is no tenderness. There is only possession and pride. Justice is not justice, but she survived to raise her son. All the actors are excellent. Adam Driver (whom I really like) and Jodie Comer do a wonderful job. Ben Affleck (unrecognizable) and Matt Damon are also very good. Their characters are believable. The movie is quite close to the real story (yes it is a true story, one of the few very documented by epistolary exchanges between the king and the lords) A very good film that should have won Oscars for its actors. :)
@KelseasComments
@KelseasComments 2 жыл бұрын
Ok I'm reading your always brilliant comment but I already have a question. As for what she wanted him to do different, I know she didn't ask for a duel, but I thought that it did kinda show him trying to go through the courts but the courts were totally corrupt. It showed multiple scenes where people discussed how quickly it would be thrown out. Which is why the duel was the only option left. I mean, he still should have told her all the details before choosing that path, and I'm certainly not on his side or making excuses for him, I'm just trying to make sure I understand right. Like I said, either way, he knew she'd die and she didn't. Either way, it's obvious his ego was in the driver's seat. I just truly don't understand what the other option was since she was so insistent on fighting it. It really doesn't matter, and I know that asking this probably makes me sound like I'm not on her side and I really am obviously. I just don't understand. Ok, I'm going back to the rest of your comment now!

Great comment as always!!! I totally agree Oscars should have been awarded for this film! Especially, or at least, Jodie. @@KelseasComments don't worry, I saw your expressions, no doubt you're not on his side. 😆 Yes I think she must have believed in justice. I'm not sure that women knew this sort of thing, men being the absolute masters of everything. Quests for power and reputation clearly impinge on their judgment. Maybe she wanted LeGris to be punished by losing his title and his privileges. Losing his land or his reputation is one of the worst punishments at this time for a man. He would not have been sentenced to death or sent to jails. Afterwards, the story is romanticized. We don't know the real reason for this request for justice. It may have come solely from Carrouge, who was in disgrace. He had issued numerous complaints, more or less justifiable, against LeGris and the lords were weary of his claims. His wife's father was repudiated by the king following his choice of alliance. Maybe she wasn't the one who decided to convict LeGris at trial. But that's how it's told.

This movie reminded me somewhat of two other ones, namely R.Scott`s first movie the 1977 "The Duellists" and the 1982 French movie "The return of Martin Guerre" with Gerard Depardieu. Yes , the movie was based on a true story about the last judicial duel in France , hence the title . And the historical Marguerite would have been well aware that she would burn if she was found a liar . There was a bit of poetic justice though , because the historic Le Gris probably died with a sword up his bum , that being the weakest part of the armour for horsemen .

Twelve months late, but I just watched your reaction -- absolutely LOVED your commentary -- also how tense and uncomfortable this was for you, particularly as a woman. I can't imagine the actors interacting between scenes on the most disturbing parts. There are rumors that the rape scene was particularly difficult to film for Driver, Scott, and especially Comer. This actually happened -- I read the true account by Eric Jager, who did all the research, wrote the book, and was consulted on the movie. The powerlessness of women at that time is so fascinating and frustrating, and that point I think is driven home in the fight scene -- she had to watch as her fate was determined by, as she put it, "which old man would tire first." Thanks for reacting to this -- riveting, compelling, sometimes horrifying... and the story stayed with me for days after I finished watching.

Jodie was indeed phenomenal, absolutely believable in her expressions and delivery of lines. I just wish Matt Damon’s character Jean was as nice (or nicer) to her like from his story perspective early on. He turned out (from her chapter perspective that was titled “truth”) to be a harsh, tough and hurt knight who was too busy with his pride and legacy rather than a loving husband. Matt Damon nailed this persona and both he and Adam Driver were 100% convincing as hard-as-nails knights. This film was so good I only wished it was a TV-series so we could see more behind each perspective and flesh out the already interesting characters even more.

Even though I saw the movie myself and thought that it was well done, Marguerite did the right thing by having the courage to tell her husband Jean that she was raped by Jacques. I like and admired that she stood up for herself. She didn't want Jacques to go unpunished for what he did. Yes, Marguerite was flattered by Jacques. She seemed to have had a crush on him despite that she's married to Jean. But just because she appeared to like him doesn't mean she was asking Jacques to have sex with her. Not when she kept protesting No. It doesn't change the fact that Jacques did rape Marguerite and I felt very horrible for her. Marguerite's husband did the right thing to stand up for her. To fight for her and to kill Jacques. But there was one thing I didn't like what Jean did. After Marguerite had told Jean that Jacques raped her, Jean insisted that she's to have sex with him right away. I know it's because Jean has an excuse of wanting to make sure that his wife sees that he's the last man that knew her. I know it's because he wanted to make sure that she gets pregnant for him right away and not by Jacques. But it is not appropriate for a husband to demand his wife to have sex with him after she tells him that she got raped because she's still traumatized. Plus, her sex could still be in a lot of pain despite that she had a bath to try to heal herself. What Jean should have done right away was be compassionate to her. To comfort his wife by cradling her before asking her in the next few days if she's up to making love with him. It would have been very considerate that way.

It's a really tough watch honestly. It's got very heavy context elements and there are some scenes that are not only really unconformable, but because of the way the story is told you end up having to watch those scenes more than once. It tells a really interesting story in an impressively artful way, and it has some incredible performances from everyone, Jodie in particular. But I don't think it's one that I'd recommend for everyone. Specifically those who have experienced SA, for example. I have, and that added to this being a really hard watch for me. But I was able to handle it and don't regret watching, so.. I don't know. I think you'd be impressed with Jodie's acting but this isn't one that you'd really MISS if you didn't watch it. You'll likely hate the way you feel throughout most of the movie, but that's the point? So it's a tough one to recommend without an asterisk.

a torturous film 🎥 saved by Jodie Comer’s amazing heartbreaking 💔 performance. And really the only reason to watch this movie. And even with Villanelle & Dasha’s reunion, they still can’t stand each other!!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Ya this is definitely not a movie you watch for a second time. 🤣 But Jodie did great. I think her strengths really shine more in Help, but it could not have been easy to do this role well and she did. As hard as it was to watch that horrible scene TWICE during the movie... She had to act it out probably so many times, giving different emotions each time. I just can't imagine how difficult that probably was to do WELL. She did a great job.

Impressive film, much more thoughtful and intelligent than what Hollywood has accustomed us to. And by far the best Riddley Scott movie in recent years (I like it more than other of his classics). What I am going to maintain, however, is that I believe that the most important thing in the film is the rape scene, it is the key to understanding the message, even if it is unpleasant to watch (like all rape scenes). I have read a lot that the film deals with the impossibility of women in achieving justice for acts that violate their dignity in an essentially patriarchal justice system and society (the religion of that time contributes it, nowadays it could be something more complex) and although I think those ideas are discussed, it is not the main thing. The rape scene is presented twice for a reason, it serves to show that there are two versions (one realizes that the girl's way of acting is definitely not the same). Now, does the fact that there are two different versions mean that one is a lie and the other is not? I don't know how the director conceived it or how the writers thought about it, but I think the answer is no, both are true. And I'm going to justify myself in the death scene of Adam Driver (one of my favorite current actors, I recommend any of his movies), he dies claiming his innocence until the end. That's where the film uncovers itself, revealing its true message. The last duel is not a film about the injustice to which a woman is subjected, although it does show a lot of this, it is a film about the origin of sexual violence perpetrated by men. What makes Adam Driver allow himself to perform such an act is not only his own judgment, it is his privilege and the relationship that he has been able to form with society. And as long as society allows that, it doesn't matter if a single person is judged, that kind of crime will continue to occur, because the change must not be individual, but systematic. It was my fifth favorite movie of the past year, and it's way better than any of the Academy Award nominees from a few days ago, with the exception of Drive My Car of course, which is the best.

"Kill all the men, let the horses live!" Whaaaaa? :D The movie is great, and it is a true story... to an extent: the fact remains that we don't know if there was a rape or not. I repeat, the movie is great, but it betrayed its Rashomon kind of storytelling by making one of the three sides of the story look like the truth (the woman's). Its feminism is pretty anachronistic anyway.

🤣🤣🤣 well the men all mostly chose to be there to some extent or another! The horses didn't ask for this shit! 🤣 It should be a duel in the pit without the horses. 🙌 Ya you've got a point. You can never fully trust the story you're being told unless you were there. History is written by those with the loudest voices.

Ya ... It's definitely been a learning process and has involved some serious trial and error figuring out how to navigate copyright. Lol! If you hate me being in the middle definitely stay away from Portrait of a Lady on Fire too. 🤣 I think those are the only two though that I made that unfortunate decision. If I'm remembering right lol.
