Happiness (1998) is pretty unsettling and deals with a lot of disturbing subject matter in a very uncomfortable way... Would love to hear your thoughts on that one, Emma!

Come and See is one of them, I loved it emotionally. I’ll never be the same again after watching Come and See (1985)

Siouxsie & The Banshees tackled Painted Bird on their fine 1983 album A Kiss In The Dreamhouse. Its also on the live album Nocturne with Robert Smith ( The Cure ) on guitar 🎸 which is being reissued tomorrow for RSD. Great film & great song.

That confused me. The movie was released in 2019. It has to be the novel that was released in 1965, written by Jerzy Kosiński. Same guy who wrote ”Being There”.

They didn't write the song about the film though, but about the book. The book is from 1965, the film is from 2019.

Not sure if you have talked about this one yet, but Dave Made a Maze. It is basically a guy that builds a cardboard maze in his living room and his friends begrugingly join him in his wacky antics. But seriously this movie had me glued to the screen, spotting all the little details they crammed into the maze. It's clear the filmmakers had a blast building this thing, and that passion just shines through. I don't want to say too much, but it has a lot of fantastic practical effects and unique visuals. Def worth a watch.

I wouldn't say this is a disturbing movie (at least not on its face) but it's unique and a little silly, and you're right: the filmmakers put a lot of cool stuff in there! When it ends, and you start to think about how it unfolded and the "real-world" consequences, then the disturbing part comes in and you have to figure out how the two sides of it can coexist. The more you think about it the worse it gets.

Jack Ketchums The Girl Next Door is the most disturbing film I’ve ever seen, I bought the blu ray because it was on sale and I watched it that same night and then sold the movie because I did not want to see that film ever again, and I rarely get disturbed.

I haven't watched that movie yet because I read the book. That was such a hard read. I kept hoping for a moment where I could relax so I could take a break from reading it, but that didn't happen. Instead I took breaks when the book got too intense. Between that book and Offspring, I somehow became a fan of Jack Ketchum as a writer. That's a positive thing I suppose lol.

Trivia: The girl that played Cebe in Out of The Blue is Linda Manz. She played Solomon's mother in Gummo. You could think of Gummo as an unofficial follow-up to Out of the Blue. Makes sense. Aleksey Kravchenko had a small role in The Painted Bird. He played Flyora Gayshun in Come In See. I think I watched the film Savage Streets when I was little. It looks like the kind of film my dad would watch back then. Looks very familiar.

If you include TV movies, Fallen Angel (American show, 1981) was extremely disturbing. I was barely a teenager when I saw it and it scared the heck out of me. It was all about child p***. I still vividly remember many scenes from that movie and the guy who played the “bad guy” in the film…his portrayal was so good that for years I actually avoided watching any movies he was in.

The Bosnian movie Quo Vadis Aida is very real. It's about the massacre of Srebrenica. It hits home for me because I am from Ex-Yu and lived through the war, but I was a child and never actually knew the real scope of evil that was happening around me.

Painted Bird is based on a novel from Polish author Jerzy Kosiński. Highly recommend it. I had to read it in high school as it was set text in my country (Poland).

Linda Manz from "Out of the Blue" was an excellent and natural actor. I loved her in "Days of Heaven". One of the most disturbing films I've seen is " Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom" (1975).

Please watch The Coffee Table (2022). If you can... this movie is one that grabs you with a crazy traumatic accident AND NEVER let's you go... or forget it. I've never felt like this in a movie. It's an anxiety inducing manic dark comedy.

Visitor Q is one of the most bizarre and disturbing films I've ever come across. It's directed by Takashi Miike who did Audition and Ichi the Killer. Saiko! The Large Family is a really disturbing mockumentary I think you'd like too :)

I watched Saiko! The Large Family myself the other day. I didn't find it disturbing in the least, I actually found it quite uplifting. I don't want to say why here just in case anybody wants to watch it....okay you've twisted my arm, vague spoilers from this point. I found it uplifting because it's moves from a bad situation to a good situation. Moreover, it's people in a potentially bad situation who take action and make their situation better. It illustrates how one good person can make a difference in people's lives.

Visitor Q was so over the top that I guffawed at a few things that were deeply disturbing. It is horror, satire and the blackest of black comedies.

Gardens of the Night wasn't for me, but I remember being totally blown away by Ryan Simpkins, who plays Leslie as a child. (Her brother is Ty Simpkins from the Insidious franchise, talented family!) I'm glad she's still acting as an adult, that kind of talent is rare.

There’s this indie film that came out in 2012 called “Jack and Diane” that I watched years ago and couldn’t finish it because it was so traumatizing to me. It was a movie about teen angst, lesbians and how jealousy can manifest horror.

I always love watching these videos even though I generally avoid disturbing films. I usually check trigger warnings before watching films that I think might be a bit too intense, but I went in blind to the original Funny Games about a year ago and that was disturbing enough for me!

Come and See (1985) never warned me but i know it was traumatising beforehand because I’ve heard 8th graders in America watching it and they were hospitalised due to being traumatised. I thought it was just another classic war film to love but I was severely traumatised afterwards for a week straight

Many years ago I happened upon a film called Looking for Mr. Goodbar … starring Diane Keaton & Richard Gere! It was slow but by the end I was thoroughly disturbed and left thinking WTF did I just watch?! 😮

That movie messed me up despite having such a recognizable cast. I know it was technically their early days but because I saw it later in life I'd become very familiar with Diane Keaton so it was so weird seeing her in that role.

@@rosaruiz4591 I’m only almost 22, i am still traumatised by Come and See (1985) but the 9/11 movie World Trade Centre hit me on another level. When they showed a real victim of 9/11 fall from the tower, I screamed in horror saying “Why couldn’t I have saved them!” I’m still messed up now

I’m glad you watched Savage Streets (glad?). I honestly only remember the one scene with the sister. It’s horrific. But it was so upsetting I remember it decades later. And I watched it at a friend’s house. We used to sneak and watch horror movies and get in trouble with her Dad daily. 😂

Hello Emma! The Isle (Seom) by Kim Kiduk is an amazing disturbing korean film from the 2000 and one of my favourite films in general. It's about a woman who's willingly refuses to speak and her relationship with a man with questionable past. It's very sad, very slow, full of beautiful shots of nature and features a few very interesting and distribing ways to use a fishing hook. Viewer discretion it has scenes of animal abuse

@Jakota1993 I think his quote on this is fairly accurate: "In America you eat beef, pork, and kill all these animals. And the people who eat these animals are not concerned with their slaughter. Animals are part of this cycle of consumption. It looks more cruel onscreen, but I don't see the difference. And yes, there's a cultural difference, and maybe Americans will have a problem with it - but if they can just be more sensitive to what is acceptable in different countries I'd hope they wouldn't have too many issues with what's shown on-screen." My dad was an avid fisherman, and cleaned his catch before he cooked it. It was never about cruelty.

I was severely depressed and traumatised after come and see that it made Woody pretty angry in the end, he’s now not the Woody I’ve always known for 17 years I have owned him. Woody is literally blaming Floyra for my depression and the way Floyra loses it with Woody is insane. I love Floyra so much for protecting me from one of my most powerful toys yet and Floyra plans to reveal to Woody what he’s really like so Woody better prepare himself

Nice to see "Clean, Shaven" and "Love Liza" get some attention. Very good films. I'm not sure if I recommended it yet but there's a really messed up but beautifully shot movie called "Love Eternal" on Tubi. The performances are good and the tone is pretty bleak.

I have watched Come and See (1985) by myself and Woody in my pitch black bedroom once and I was severely traumatised but it didn’t stop me getting very close with Floyra as the month went on

I am new to this channel and am not sure if these were covered but "Boxing Helena" and "American Mary" were both disturbing. One of the films is from the early 90's and the other I think the 10's.

Okay, who let Savage Streets into the house? When I saw that film get recommended, I had a total flashback to late 80's video rentals. There are only a handful of movies I hate to admit I saw and Savage Streets is one of them. It was directed by Danny Steinmann who also directed "Friday The 13th, Part 5: A New Beginning", which is also known for its excessive female nudity. How I know that little bit of trivia can only be explained that I must have rented both films around the same time and that director's name just stuck out.

@@actfray Oh WOW! I would love to see it on the big screen! That ending scene is definitely in my top 5 most disturbing of all time: just so terrifying. I think it's just such an excellent film as a whole and one of the only female focused movies made during the 70's realism movement. Diane Keaton is a goddess.

Savage Streets was directed by Danny Steinmann, who came from... other kinds of films. Based on this movie, he got Friday the 13th, Part 5. That's why the movie is the way that it is.

I'm so freaking happy you enjoyed (?) The Painted Bird. It's honestly one of my favorite disturbing movies. Just like A Serbian Film, I think it's a combination of the filmmaking and acting that really put it at the top of my list. I've def added a few of the rest on this list to my watch list! You should watch Come and See at night because the experience is horrifyingly better. I had nightmares for 5 weeks afterwards and I actually aged from 21 to 28 leaving my Woody traumatised for life but I’m more traumatised than him which made me have a close bond with Come and See lately and I’ve not left the movies side since

Finally someone else who watched, and agrees that Gardens of the Night was very disturbing. I borrowed it from the library years ago just for the cast alone. Did not realize what I was getting into, and it has definitely burnt into my brain ever since.

Exactly what Come and see did to me and I eventually became very close with Floyra in one month. Woody is very disturbed by how we fell in love so quickly and telling Floyra about the disturbing rumours of the Princess of Wales really hit him

I recently became aware of this film from 2013 titled "The Profane Exhibit". Let me say, I am absolutely OBSESSING over seeing this one, but the problem is it is nowhere to be found. The harder it is to find it, the more I have to see it. If anyone has seen this one and has any suggestions, that would be amazing. It looks GNARLY AF!!! I've only ever seen the trailer and one brief scene from it.

You should attempt my all time favourite disturbing movie 1985’s Come and See. Warning: Do NOT watch at night because I literally lashed out constantly for a month straight. 2 months on and I’m still not settling down

I love this series so much. I love a good disturbing/distressing film rec, and it's hard to find lists that aren't full of the "classics." I don't begrudge anyone their right to be disturbed by A Serbian Film, but there's just so much else out there! This is the one channel where I know I'll hear a bunch I haven't seen and even more I haven't heard of.

Recommending this one again: I Start Counting. Definitely not traumatic but I'd say it fits the bill of disturbing films, especially for the time it was made. Great work as always and loving the hair!!

What a wonderful Friday treat, another Disturbing list with Emma! I'd like to also vote for Mysterious Skin (I am not sure if you've covered it yet?) - I don't think any movie disturbed on that level. Maybe because I'm a mom, and the thought of someone hurting my son like that is what keeps me up at night...it's an incredible film though. Just deeply upsetting.

I lay in bed and sobbed for an hour after Mysterious Skin. No other movie has ever made me do that. It’s an incredible film and one of JGL’s best performances but I can never watch it in full ever again. Definitely disturbing and traumatic lol

I highly recommend the Korean film Hope from 2013. Definitely deals with disturbing content. However it's such a beautiful story. Worth the watch!

I'd give I guess what I'd call a soft recommendation for a film called All I See Is You. It's imperfect and very mainstream-feeling in a lot of ways, but there's a reveal in it midway through that just shook and horrified me so much I still considering it one of the most disturbing movies I've ever seen. It's really more a personal thing, I think, than anything the film itself is doing (it's playing with some of my greatest fears), but I do think it's a shame it's so overlooked. It's not a great film, but it deserves some appreciation. And Blake Lively's performance is quite good.

I dont know if they "count" but The Jinx and Dear Zachary, both documentaries. I havent been the same after watching both. I cant even begin to describe the gut wreching moments in it. I still think about this story to this day.

Love your disturbing lists Em. One of the most highly traumatising movies I ever sat through in a cinema was Gary Oldman's "Nil By Mouth" from 1997. Also please check out "Tyrannosaur" from 2011. It's brutal!

Here's the top 5 most disturbing I've ever seen: Atroz Trauma Debris Documentor The angels melancholia Martyrs And yes I've seen all the obligatory "most disturbing" (Serbian film, human centipede series, August underground etc.) Edit: After watching the video I'd like to add in that I apologize in advance, these movies will completely scar you, I don't recommend even watching the marian Dora films. They're the most disgusting thing I've ever seen. In their stead I'd like to recommend "Life and death of a porno gang" and "black metal veins".

There are some really good Russian disturbing movies that I think are worth mentioning: "Cargo 200", "Leviathan" (Leviathan is maybe not the most distubing but it's so bleak, depressing and heavy), "Come and See" and "Lilya 4-ever". I belive that "come and see" is one of the best, horrific depictions of war and the impact it has on people. Highly recommend.

Below are some films I saw over the last two weeks at BIFFF (Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival) and quite enjoyed: Last Stop in Yuma County (2023) crime thriller Your Monster (2023) rom com with an edge Bath Bomb (2024) disturbing short In a violent nature (2024) gory slasher Exhuma (2024) Korean supernatural horror When Evil Lurks (2023) Argentinian possession horror --> heard about that one on this channel last year and was quite psyched. Come and See is also depressing as heck but i eventually found a soft spot for Floyra and he is very disturbed by the current rumours of Catherine, Princess of Wales and he hears me crying for her every night and it haunts him. Floyra has more love than Woody does and I’m glad I’ve cut Woody off

I love Out Of the Blue. It was recently restored and released on Blu-ray, thanks, in part, to fans Chloë Sevigny and Natasha Lyonne. A few of my picks: Candy Land (2002)- I love dark films, but this went just a bit over the edge for me. Olivia Luccardi gives a great central performance, however. Chilean director Pablo Larraín has made several disturbing films, including Tony Manero and The Club. Leolo (1992) is a French-Canadian film that deserves a reissue; director Jean-Claude Lauzon only made two films before his death in a plane crash. Last is Excision( 2012)- I don't think it totally works, but I gasped several times, and AnnaLynne McCord is great in the lead.

So I watched 'Savage Streets based on this video and OMG! Has to be one of the most TRULY mean spirited and profanity-laced films of that era. Specifically the gang rape is BRUTAL, reminded me of the "I spit On Your Grave" rape scene....didn't expect such a dystopian film.

I would like to suggest the tv show Baby Reindeer which is on Netflix over here (Ireland) and may I also suggest that nobody watch it, because although it is a fantastic piece of work from a, I think writing point of view, it has left me in deep, deep trouble from a psychological/emotional point of view. That's not me being cute. It's presented as a stalker story but is actually, in my view, a masterful exploration of a character. I thought I benefited from not knowing anything about the show, and where it goes, but actually I finished it yesterday and have been having a prolonged panic attack since. Today is just a complete right off. Which means that this list dropped at the best time possible because I find a release or catharsis in films like these. I hadn't heard of The Painted Bird and it looks gorgeous, I am grateful to the person who suggested it.
