INSANE Heat Wave Caused Gabe's Family Hauler To EXPLODE

105* degree days did a number on this VW Routan (Chrysler Town & Country) and the cooling system couldn't stand it. The plastic fittings between the engine and the heater core broke and stranded Gabe on the side of the highway for 3 hours. Today we're going to try and fix it at home without buying the very expensive factory hose.

Good to see Chrysler kept using cheap plastic on critical parts. This was the biggest problem I had with my 2.7 - plastic thermostat housing would crack every 40,000 miles.

Same issue with plastic coolant elbows on the GM 3.8 V6... they all do it. Tell any auto manufacturer they can save 5 cents per car and the beancounters will jump on it every time as long as it lasts past the warranty.

Im a mechanic and was working on them for 13 years. left the job in 2012 and any plastic (water) fitting eventually cracks and crumbles on them. I can remember an audi A6 SOHC v6 the customer had a small leak from the water pipes that ran from the throttle body and eventually overheated. A slow drip. They have a splash shield for the oil from the cams in the rocker covers. it got so hot they both melted ran down the drain holes into the oil pan and the melted plastic blocked the oil pick up and that seized the motor. Awesome design. if the water leak doesn't get you the melting plastic will. The golfs had the plastic water outlets with the o rings that had steel sleeves around the 2 6mm bolts that hold them on. mk3. They regularly cracked from the sleeves to the centre and if you didn't see the the antifreeze stain it would turn into a dripping leak quickly. That was also compounded by the rad fan sender failing regularly. Any of the Audis with an orange plastic dipstick sleeve. They were on the fast seller list at the dealers. Well they break off at the bottom from heat and time and if you dont realise that they are broken the dip stick sits lower in the tube giving a false level reading. (by quite a lot) Then you have the brown positive cables on the A4s that run from the battery to the starter. After 2 to 3 years the insulation falls off them and the only bit that doesn't fall off is the piece that is under the 'P' clip on the back corner of the block behind the manifold. they are tight enough not to touch any thing but its still scary finding them. I could go on. LOL

I know exactly what you're saying. I'm a mechanic too with a lot less experience but I've already seen a ton of coolant leaks related to leaking plastic parts. It is sickening to realize how much plastic is being used in today's modern engines. I refuse to buy any of them; I stick with engines that are made with primarily metal. Amazing: they don't leak coolant...and seem to have less problems in general, too!

I just replaced both heater core hoses on my moms 12 Town and country a week ago, and about a year prior I had to replace both hoses on my old 13 Grand Caravan. I replaced mine in 90 degree heat in a blacktop parking lot in direct sunlight. Was definitely not fun but it is what it is. But the second time around I did it in less than 15 minutes. Was much easier in a 70 degree night. I used the Dorman hoses, for $150 both times. Mine actually burst, and my moms was just leaking. Super known issue with these vans.

@@christinesommerfeld9815 thank you! I have always had an interest in mechanical work. I come from a long line of “gear heads” but I myself am not. I’m not super knowledgeable but I can confidently do most “basic” maintenance. I got quoted almost $900 for coils and plugs on my old car. I did it for $150 all in. It’s very satisfying to me to do my own work. It was that job i did that made me realize it’s not as difficult as people have made it out to be. I just want to be confident in my ability. Hopefully I can learn to do some more repairs from of the work on my car I’m doing with my dad tomorrow. Really looking forward to it! I’ve never really payed attention to the suspension work I’ve been growing up with. But I’m really going to try to retain what goes into it tomorrow. :)

Just a quick correction. The coaster you were describing with the cable lift is Millennium Force. A Giga coaster standing at 310 feet. Initial drop speed, 93 Mph. The one that stalled is the Magnum XL200 , a 200 foot coaster with a chain lift. Initial drop speed, 72 Mph. Built in 1989, it was the worlds first "Hyper" coaster and kept that record until 1994. The ride stalled due to what is being called a "standard ride stoppage". These typically are a result of a track sensor error that will not allow the ride to re-start until it is cleared for safety reasons. Love your videos btw! Keep up the great job!

It's what happens when accountants override the engineers. They'll spend a billiondy dollars on a 10 Way adjustable seat that you will never readjust once it's set, but they will totally skimp out on critical engine items like cooling hoses. It's asinine.

@@christinesommerfeld9815I blame professional auto reviewers. They get so caught up with gimmicky junk and "soft touch dashboards" vs "cheap feeling plastic dash" so manufacturers respond accordingly and we end up with giant laggy screens, bubbling "soft touch" dashboards (literally touch mine once a month when cleaning, made more difficult by not being plastic), 8 buttons to accidentally hit on the key fob, and fake buttons.

Dorman makes the aluminum oil filter etc adaptor on the top of the engine too, and it sounds like it's starting to lose one of the roller rockers from the minor tick I'm hearing. If it is replace them right away before it starts eating the cam lobe, then it's a lot more work and parts.

If I remember correctly, the OE part includes the cross-over behind the motor or something. It is expensive. My wife's T&C had this issue last year. Just wait until you have to do the oil cooler. I was talking to one of my buddies who runs a shop and he was impressed my factory one made it to 180k. He said probably because I change my own oil and don't crank on it.
