This 1983 Volkswagen Rabbit GTI hasn't been started since 2001 and has been sitting even longer. It was abandoned in a barn and we're only pulling it out because the property sold and the owners want it gone. We just need to get is running, get it cleaned up, and get it listed for sale... so, will it start?

Where can I keep up with you off the bike?

I love this era of cars. My first car was a '79 Ford Fiesta. After buying it my dad and I went to some local junkyards for little odds and ends. Ended up finding an imported German left-hand drive Fiesta XR2. We raided that car for every performance part we could. We installed the parts onto my car and I had a good, working clone XR2. Total price for the car and all of the XR2 parts was a whopping $900.00! Fun car for 1 1/2 years until I got t-boned. That XR2 was the Ford version of the GTI. Awh what simple fun for 80's hot hatches.

What a beautiful car! I remember test-driving a Rabbit back in the early 80s (it was a diesel) and was still fun to drive. Johnny reminds me of my best friend back then... if whatever automotive project we were working on didn't run right, he used to say, "Get a bigger hammer!"

I’m impressed….those new gas cans are designed to spill fuel everywhere when ever you use one!👍👍 there is also a little screen in the inlet pipe to the cis block that can clog and cause issues in some of those cis systems.

Talk about memory lane. I held the flashlight for my dad, for the first time, on a black GTI. Coincidentally, it was also the first time my Dad cursed in front of me while working on something. So many memories with that car.

Great memories. I had the 1983 Rabbit GTI in white with blue interior. That was the first year the GTI model was introduced in the US. What a car. It is the only car that I wish I never sold. The 1983 Rabbit GTI came in white, black, red and silver with either a blue or red interior.

How cool for the VW. Rabbit was my first experience with front wheel drive. My buddy had one. We had a pretty significant snow, 8 or 9 inches. He convinced me to bag work and we headed from the Hershey area to the Poconos to ski. The little thing was amazing in the snow. Developed a love for them. A Jetta, a Sirocco and two Beetles. Bought them in less than pristine shape and redid them. Wish I had kept them 20 years.

Very tight space in the engine bay of the LAMBO. That must have been a PITA . It looks clean and neat. I have to say those super cars have engines that look like fine art from the top, but underneath it is a mechanics nightmare. A while back you used a cleaning system on a Camaro for the engine. I thought you put something in the fuel to clean the injectors, I was wondering if it would have worked on the VW? Awesome content and tapping the injectors...solid !

I Love the VW Rabbits! My first car was a 1975 2dr manual 4spd Red rabbit white interior with a 32/36 carb upgrade. huge chain and c-clamp holding up the passenger side engine mount and the engine and the transmission moved heavily with every shift and I loved it!I also had a 1980 Cabriolet same issues must be my heavy foot! My Mothers's 1982 Dodge Omni had some of the same VW parts!.

Blame the Green movement. It's environmentally unsafe to be able to fill your car from a gas can when you unexpectedly run out of gas. You're supposed to have it towed to a dealer and then inspected to make sure it's safe to fill the tank again. I think you're even supposed to fill it with the special dealership only gas.

I had a 1977 Audi Fox wagon when I was 16, it was my parents car handed down to us kids. Same or very similar engine. I took it up past 90 mph and it started stuttering. Best I could tell was that I had picked up crud from the gas tank. I was so worried to take it home like that, so I went to the gas station and put two bottles of octane booster and a bottle of fuel treatment and it cleaned right up. That car ran past 150k miles before rust took it off the road.

I saw one the other day, forgot how freaking small they were. The biggest problem with them at this age is rust in critical supports. Sad, so would love to re-live that time again.
