I'm so glad I found this. I have a tabletop furnace for melting metal, and I played with it for the first time today, pouring the metal out onto a ceramic plate to get weird shapes. I wondered if I could pour it directly into water. :-D

You can coat a crucible in many ways. The most common method is to fill it with a mixture of 50% Boric acid and 50% borax. Fill the crucibles to 1/3/ to 14 full - depends on size. You can: 1. pre-heat the crucible first and then add powders. or 2. put the crucible in a kiln or 3. heat after applying powders. IF you heat after the powder is applied, heat slowly and from the bottom. Borax melts at: 1,369°F (743°C) and Boric acid melts at: 339.6°F (170.9°C). You can use either product alone or together. If using only boric acid, you can melt in the stove. Protect the area around the crucible. Some fluxes contain these chemicals and therefore, you can use flux. If it is liquid, you will need to burn off the liquid. It will then become a powder and you will have to melt the powder. In all cases: when the material is liquid, either swirl it around in the crucible or "paint" it with a carbon fiber stir rod. Whatever works for you - the goal is melted material that forms a glassy coating all over the interior of the crucible. How you get that effect, is up to you.

Hi Nancy! Just love your videos! I just wondered, could I use Easy-Flo flux to prepare my crucible or do I need to use Borax powder?

I was terrified Sugar might drop molten metal down those fancy boots! I know someone who had that happen with rubber boots and it burn a really nasty wound in top of his foot until he got the boot off. Safe footware in the shop people; its a work environment not a fashion show

Jeepers, I thought I was the only child who liked to break a thermometer to get the mercury out. I usually bit them. I still remember the beads of mercury rolling across the kitchen table. Again, jeepers! Anyway, thanks for the video. I did water casting years ago during lost wax casting classes, got some neat pieces. But what I want are those tiny cup-like forms - love those! I'll have to experiment. Any idea the particular technique for those? Colder water, warmer water??

Nancy, silly question. Is your little homemade kiln station made out of masonry bricks - or are those fire/kiln bricks? I sold my kiln ... so will need to make my own little high-heat cubbie like you have shown here. Thanks so much! Linda

nancy, just watched the video on water casting . Have a question , I know these are two totally separate mediums , but I still want to know , I used to use sand from the beach at our river to pour hot melted wax in to make candles and other craft things. Can you pour melted metal into wet or damp sand and get something cool from that? or will the hot metal melt the sand to a type of glass? Really love watching and learning , who says you can't teach on old dog new tricks ? I am 61 yrs young, and you and your buddy sugar are a trip minus the drugs! well maybe a few fumes. thanks bunches Windy

exactly what is borax? is it the same as the stuff you can find in the laundry department of the grocery store? is there an alternative like maybe flux? is it toxic and dose it stink when you add the heat?
