I used to hate doing thumbnails because it seemed like a waste of valuable painting time. I've since learned that they can be a great asset to planning your painting. Most importantly, I have learned to group similar values and focus on major shapes for a stronger composition and simplify the process! It's a great way to plan for success in watercolor.

Just discovered you recently. Loved this video. Seemed appropriate after I did a painting and realized I could have improved my placement of literally everything had I done a thumbnail! Exceptionally clear guidelines about tonal values. Thank you again.

I’ll be going to my first Plein Air event in October. I think most of the people paint with Oils . I’m thinking maybe I should just take photos and do thumbnails there and then paint when I get home. I don’t have an easel or any Plein air equipment. It can be very dry and windy here.

Thanks! like everyone else, this vid has cleared up many questions for me and opened up a potential new hobby of colour swatching values :) at least it will be brush klms.( plus thumb nailing with paint not just pencil sketches) I wonder how/where you keep your swatches ?😊
