Watercolour demonstration by Tim Wilmot featuring negative painting. Negative painting is the practice of painting the space around an object, rather than the object itself, and used so much in watercolour.

In this demo I will be covering...
1) Choice of Subject. What makes a good watercolour subject. How to simplify the scene. What is negative painting all about and why is it so important for watercolour.
2) Materials I use such as the paper. I will also cover the paints I use and the palette, plus how I hold the different brushes for different techniques.
3) Doing the outline sketch as the first step. How to draw building and boat shapes.
4) Doing the sky and the first wash of the background and then the foreground. Introducing negative painting around houses and boats.
5) Shadows and details of the buildings and boats.
6) Watch out for the end highlighting tips.

Another great demo Tim. I love the way you simplify the subject. I was in that place some years ago and tried to paint almost the same subject, needless to say how overwhelming it was to see so many windows, boats and people and of course I tried to paint them all!!!!. I will go back to my old photos and try again but this time following your style. Thanks again

Hi Tim. Havent seen your demos before, as Istarted watching I thought to myssels „this blokes got no idea“.....such vivid colours all rushing into one another and then a dirty cadmium yellow reflection in the water. Well I‘m absolutely gob smacked naturally. The roof of the yellow house still looks like one of santas socks, but fits perfectly. I probably have painted some pictures nearly as good as your fimished product but in no way so free flowing and the whole process full of fear of trashing the painting. Thats the difference to being able to copy good painters in contrast to translating photos into art. Thats the real art. Well done. Regards Gary.

Thank you Tim for another outstanding demonstration of your way of watercolor to which I find myself (as many others viewers) addicted. I also admire your courage in laying down those strong washes that WC students like myself are afraid of and hope to acquire that skill from your demo's.

Fabulous! The final product is beautiful, but what makes the video so interesting is the process. You're constantly delighting and surprising me at a point where I would perhaps consider a painting 'finished', that you go in and make extra touches.

Thank you very much sir. I don’t know why anyone would give you a thumbs down for this tutorial. I love how you called the use of the white paint for the supports cheating, lol, as if! this was one of the better examples for a beginner of how much you need to Keep The Faith with watercolor. It's very easy for a beginner, who thinks they've done everything 'right' to look at their mid stage painting and think 'watercolor just isn't for me'... and no offense I thought the same about this painting, 'here's this guy who's been doing watercolor for years and his painting is looking as bad as mine that I never finished'... UNTIL you added the darks - of course you knew this and it looks amazing. But I have quit a couple of watercolor paintings as a beginner because I didn't have the experience to know that you have to persevere through the value ranges for it to come to life! I've seen a couple of your demos but this one really hit that idea home, thanks
@TimWilmot
@TimWilmot 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that great feedback. You hit it on the nail. Never give up on a watercolour, but don't overwork it. So sometimes a hard call. The values can make all the difference

Wonderful! It's still such a mystery to me how you go from the first and second washes, that look so chaotic, to the finished painting where everything suddenly makes sense and looks absolutely beautiful. I have yet not been able to work this way myself as I feel scared to put in so much color in the first wash, feel overwhelmed in the second wash when things are not tied together yet. But it is my ultimate goal to be able to do this! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Agathe. Yes it looks a mess after the first wash, but seems to come together. Always go darker than you think with watercolor it dries lighter

I have tried that, but it hides the palette and mixing area. Okay when I am drawing as that area is not being used. The wide screen 16:9 ratio makes it a bit difficult. Wish YT had a way of sharing a file ..

With respect , you disapprove of masking fluid , but in almost all your paintings , ( including this one ) you use white gouache for highlights . The ' purist ' wouldn't use either ; so the integrity of either technique , is a moot point !
