Hi all! This was a quick video tonight. A simple landscape on a small scale but still packs some punch! Hope you enjoy it! I do love light close to the horizon and moody skies! I just can't get enough of that sort of thing! Let me know what you think of taking out the light on water in the foreground and then making a ridge line the subject.....controversial!

Rives BFK etching paper. Probably best to source this from your local store so you can look after the paper and not have it posted unless you are buying a large amount of paper and it will be looked after. There is nothing worse than getting hundreds of sheets all with a indent in them. Having said that you can actually source this paper from amazon:

Some people have been extremely happy with the state of the paper when it arrived (and some not!)
I love this paper it is soft and lights are lifted easily from it.

Merci pour cette nouvelle vidéo. L aquarelle est un médium fantastique qui permet à des personnes de réaliser des peintures superbes sans forcément savoir dessiner. J'ai commencé il y a 6 mois. J ai compris plusieurs choses essentielles dès le départ : La qualité des pigments est essentielle Pour les pinceaux ça l est aussi Le papier utilise doit être d excellente qualité. Je me suis tournée vers le monde de la fantasy pour ajouter la dimension imaginaire qui permet de s évader encore plus. J adore votre travail, je suis émerveillée par la technique et le résultat final. Grâce à vous, j'ai appris beaucoup de choses qui m ont permis de m améliorer relativement rapidement. Ça n'est pas parfait ce que je fais mais ça me permet de m évader et de voyager. Merci d aussi bien expliquer avec ces vidéos et vos commentaires.

Wow, those were some pretty bold moves during the process! First lots of water and then the darkening of the foreground. I also thought it was best with a bit cropped off of the bottom. Fantastic result, cheers!

I missed the start of this on the live, but now I've been able to watch it from start to finish. I'm amazed by how much you blast it with the spray bottle. You certainly seem to know what results it will give you, or do you? I guess the element of the unknown reaction is what gives your paintings a vibrancy. I enjoyed the alterations and assessment at the end. It looks much better with the dark cold heavy sky sharply contrasting with the warm light below and cutting away some of the land mass helps keep the focus on that wonderful ridge you created. You obviously must spend a lot of time in nature to bring that kind of observation to your art. The heat gun/dryer gets a good working over too. I haven't been so bold with these tools so far, athough recently I've been using it more to make sure the paint layers are absolutely dry before going in again. The intensity of pigment is really wonderful, I love painting like that too. But I've had a few artists say to me that maybe I should try acrylic or oil, because I'm defeating the object of using watercolour by not taking advantage of its transparency. I just say that I like it like that. I do paint more transparent sometimes, but that's usually when trying my hand at urban sketching. I'm still painting with L-plates on, so I want to try different things, play with textures and intensities. Recently, I've been giving myself a couple of more disciplined tasks by going back to basics and working through some watercolour book exercises and KZfaq demonstration exercises too. These smaller scale ones you are posting are ideal for me to keep experimenting with the more loose and creative approach that you have. Thanks for your dedication and hard work in making these videos, you are inspiring me and the friends I share your videos with.

Hi Mark! Thanks for the feedback and info! I don’t think you should not use watercolour just because you like strong tones! Of course try different mediums if you want to but the magical thing about watercolour is you can have both in the one painting. You can have some areas of weak transparent wash and other areas with strong pigment! That is much harder to do with the other mediums! You do what brings you joy! I really dislike rules and restrictions on art! I’m really pleased you enjoy the lessons! 👍👍

Dang you make that look easy :) its so moody and beautiful! Something that, I'm sure to you seems simple, but makes so much difference, is that bit that you lifted off the blue at the top, just left of center....gave such life to it! And I can't lie, I caught my breath when I saw you grabbing your larger brush knowing you would go after that lower part...but, of course, absolutely the right call...as you clearly know :) the ridge is just a beautiful shape!!!!!! I don't know why I watch art videos before bed...dumbest move ever...in my head I think "this will be relaxing and nice" but of course, as much as I love it, my brain spins like top with inspiration 🙄😆🤣😏 and yet...I ALWAYS do the same thing because I can't seem to help myself 😆 So, eventually I'll hopefully sleep and try something bold like this when I wake up.......oooooooor, I'll more then likely not be able to sleep until I take a shot at it... oy 🤦🏼‍♀️ oh well... :) Thank you! Oh also...I love all the dishes of paint, so smart because I feel like I waste paint because I always need to get a larger brush full of paint then will fit in a tiny tin, so I put some fresh out..its not wasted of course since I can let it dry and reuse...but it gets hard to mix color's in the same area, I run out of room. So, love this idea :) next time I have a few dollars, probably not till spring with how work is going or not going...anyway, then I'll head to the thrift shop :) and I will also one day get myself a hake brush!!!!! thanks again!!

Glad you liked it JE! And it is good to get excited and enthusiastic! I think buying a few bowls is a good idea. You can get from some asian art stores stackable bowls with a lid for the last one! My mentor Tony Smibert always had those! They take up less room and you can pack them away pretty easily! I do like it because you don't waste heaps of paint that you squeezed out of the tube!

@@ScottSwinson oh super smart with the stackable ones and 1 lid!!! Just let them dry and then stack them up right? I'm in a small town in Tennessee in the u.s. so I don't have anything like that local...and no money for it anyway right now....but its on my list of things to save for when we can!! And I'll start looking around to find what I'm looking for. I think having the bowls ready will make it easier on my arthritic hands too, not having to prep each time and squeeze the little bottles...and not waste any which is wonderful! Yup, I do get super excited and enthusiastic, thats why I did this name, I'm Jade, a bit jaded in some ways due to a rough, putting it lightly, childhood, but, art, even though I came to it SUPER late in life, has saved me in many ways. And it keeps my head in a positive place, even when I can't make art due to pain, I appreciate so much being able to see beautiful art being made on here, it's the only social media I can handle :) so I appreciate all the work that goes in to it...it helps me so much to stay positive and stay excited and inspired for the moments I am able to paint!! So thank you again for that!! :)

Love your painting style Scott. Also admire the way you introduce light to your skies (and landscapes and seascapes) by water spraying……….Do you use a mister or an ordinary water spray bottle?

I love this painting. I am fairly new to watercolour so wanted to give this a try. Can I ask you the consistency of your paint. I used very little water, but was unable to get the depth and vibrancy of colour that you achieved. Do you use 'tube' consistency? Thank you.
