Seriously looking into this from an energy independence angle - could see this working alongside a Hydroelectric Pelton Turbine, simple 15m tall two tank system, with float valve to equalise tanks to make up for the flow rate differential between this ram pump. Should be able to generate 5kw from that type of system 24/7 and it would be completely closed loop apart from top up water feed due to evaporation losses. Combine this with a rotary water cavitation system or Frennette heater and you have free power, limitless heating with the only maintenance being seals and bearing replacements on the generators. It's so simple it makes you question why the hell are we still burning fossil fuels and using toxic lithium batteries.

Is there any way to use a papa pump system to draw from a well to a 15 foot high small water tower or would it be best to use a solar pump to get the water to a holding tank and then use the papa pump to lift the water ???
@Waterpoweredtechnologies
@Waterpoweredtechnologies 2 жыл бұрын
The Papa Pumps requires a flowing water source, this is due to needing a supply head as the water pressure in this supply head is what powers the pump. So yes a solar pump would be best to pump the water out of the well to then feed the papa pump, the water exhausted from the papa pump (not pumped) could then be directed back to the well so none is lost. hope this helps, feel free to contact us at: info@wptglobal.net
@johncochran8497
@johncochran8497 Жыл бұрын
For your use case, it would be best to simply use your solar pump to pump the water all the way to your water tower. The papa pump is just another version of a ram pump which typically has an energy efficiency of 60 to 80 percent. It doesn't make any sense to pump water to a holding tank to then immediately throw away a significant percentage of the energy you spent in pumping to the holding tank in the first place. Now for situations where you have sufficient natural head, then using a RAM pump makes sense. But in situations where you have to create the required head artificially by using an alternate energy source, then using a ram pump is nonsense.

@Waterpoweredtechnologies
@Waterpoweredtechnologies 5 жыл бұрын
And a bike is useless if you want to fly. The whole point with ram pumps is that they use available surface water to self power the water pump. If you have no alternative to a well, fair enough, you have to use a powered pump, but if you are abstracting water from the ground when you have an available spring, stream or river, you're nuts. You are also depleting aquifers and contributing to a world water crises.
@Iceaxehikes
@Iceaxehikes 5 жыл бұрын
@@Waterpoweredtechnologies it is illegal to draw surface water for public consumption in many places. You are also glossing over the fact that you need the kinetic energy of water ABOVE the level of the pump to make it operate. At $1,400 you could also use a solar powered pump without the limitations of a ram pump.
@Waterpoweredtechnologies
@Waterpoweredtechnologies 5 жыл бұрын
Everyone should check if there are abstraction limits in their area, but don't think it is OK to take groundwater and stress aquifers. Check out online how the world's aquifers are stressed by over abstraction of ground water. We constantly say that for the pump to work you must have a flowing water source that falls by at least one metre. The Papa Pump is just one renewable energy solution for pumping water, in some cases it would be better to use wind or solar, but if have a flowing water source this can be an incredibly simple and efficient way to pump water at very little cost. We have put pumps into Africa because the don't have a lot of sunshine (Uganda mountains) and solar panels and metal pumps are often stolen - so the Papa Pump was a good solution. Every situation is different.

I guess if you are not concerned with wasting a lot of water to pump a small amount of water, this is an acceptable solution. Of course, an electric pump would waste no water.
@Waterpoweredtechnologies
@Waterpoweredtechnologies 5 жыл бұрын
A little negative there Matthew. That is the whole point of zero energy pumps. They use no electricity or fuel - it's better for the planet. And don't forget some people don't have electricity so it is a good off-grid solution. If you are off-grid you can use a dirty diesel pump - not good. Or you can use solar or wind to extract water from a borehole - better, but you are depleting ground water which takes decades to recover. Or you can use the naturally flowing water available to you. And by the way, the water is not wasted, it is returned to the watercourse and reduces abstaction. Would you describe the water that flows through a water mill as 'wasted'? Both the water wheel and the ram pump use the water as power. Of course it is not the solution to every water delivery problem and if you want to use electricity instead of 'free' power, go for it.
@Iceaxehikes
@Iceaxehikes 5 жыл бұрын
@@Waterpoweredtechnologies not negative; pragmatic. You are using a lot of water to pump a tiny amount of water. a dirty diesel pump could accomplish the same task in minutes that your ram pump takes days to do. I never said it wasn't a useful technology under certain circumstances. But the water you use to power the pump is NOT returned back uphill to it's source. Ram pumps have been around a long time. Their uses are many. But there is no magic here. Your video glosses over the facts a bit. In an area where water is precious, this type of pump will waste a lot of water unless you design your field both at the delivery end AND downhill from the pump. You know they make solar electric pumps that waste no water at all right? The ram pump is not the only solution to the problem and certainly not the cheapest at the price you are charging. Of course, someone could build their own ram pump rather easily from hardware store parts, and many have. What is the value of your pump over a home made pump?
@Waterpoweredtechnologies
@Waterpoweredtechnologies 5 жыл бұрын
The pump is used by a lot of farmers who have available streams and springs in fairly remote locations. They could run a cable down for an electric pump or carry fuel down every so often to top up your diesel pump. But they have decided on putting in Papa Pump which pumps water (albeit a small percentage of the flow) to a storage tank for gravity feeding. The flow isn't a lot compared to a diesel pump but it works 24 hours a day without human interface. Any excess is simply drained or piped back to the watercourse. The diesel pump will do the job quicker by they do not need 'extra quick' water. Not many want to go down to the pump everyday to refuel, turn on or turn off, just so that you can get the water quicker. Not very pragmatic? Not for everyone in every circumstance but a real time saver for some. Also once installed, you save on fuel. And it doesn't pollute the planet. What's not to like?
@bobbydreki7892
@bobbydreki7892 2 жыл бұрын
@@Iceaxehikes Exactly... in areas where water is precious... it's quite dangerous to take to much water from a river, because it might cause big problems lower on the river... so yeah this kind of pumps are great even then, because you're pretty sure you don't use to much water. The "lost " water is returning in the river and feeding plants, or giving water to other humans and animals further down the river.
@johncochran8497
@johncochran8497 Жыл бұрын
You're not bothering to think about it there. Imagine a different system. One where you have a turbine powered by the water. The output from the turbine is used to generate electricity, which in turn is used to power a conventional water pump. Obviously, the amount of water pumped would be a fraction of the water used to power the turbine. Would you call the water used to power the turbine waste? I think not. And the same principle applies to the ram pump. It uses the kinetic energy from a large amount of water to pump a smaller amount of water to a higher height. It just does so via a clever application of the water hammer effect caused by a value suddenly closing, causing a moving mass of water to suddenly stop.
