Get a piece of wood and a spokeshave or drawknife, give it a go. It’s what I did and worked out OK. Practice makes you better

Find a handle you like, get yourself a nice Hickory or White oak plank and transfer the handle onto your blank. I use a band saw to cut out the rough handle, then a draw knife and wood rasp for shaping. Take your time, it definitely helps to have your pattern handle to compare with. It's a lot of fun to do and very rewarding when done.

Good stuff Buckin. I get the big palm swell but never quite understood the need for having the big block of wood at the bottom of the handle. Having a large striking surface for hafting makes sense as well as giving room for customization for your own special palm fit, but I’d still lop off the extra after. I like the fawns foot look best.

Just before Xmas I hung an axe for my grandpa that he actually has early memories of his dad using that axe..it was a double bit that was far ground and smashed up pretty bad on both sides so bad I couldn't see any sign of any stamps at all...the handle it got was a bit thick for what was left of the head and has that dead horizontal grain orientation but as he doesn't plan to use it I wasn't at all worried I burnt it up and stained it blued the head and sort of just brushed the edges for a "patina" look and it came out deadly!

Love ya buckin. The tree community just recently lost a very great man. His name was Jed(inbred Jed) and he was apart of the Guilty Of Treeson KZfaq channel. He was one of the best tree climbers around, and he unfortunately was killed on the job, and left behind a wife and two daughters. There is a tribute for him on Jakes channel(Guilty of Treeson) And a link to a GoFundMe to help out his family with funeral costs. Im sure it would mean the world to his family if anyone is interested in sharing the video and GoFundMe link. He was a great man and i learned so much from him. It really hits close to home because i do tree work too. I'm very sorry to bring such sad news. There's a great lesson to be learned, especially for anyone who does tree work for a living and think that something like that could never happen to them. I love ya buckin. And everyone else in this community, i love you all too! Tell your friends and family you love them any chance you get. Life is short.

You are 100 percent corect about your handles.. that is why I would never buy a killinger premium handle because you are waisting money ....grain orientation is not that important ....you should test a hardware store handle ,a killinger, and one of your homade handles you made out of a hickory board. I think the results will speak for its self....hope yall feel better soon and have a great week end...
