Before you sink your teeth into the review of the WD Black SN850X SSD, it is important to understand that this is not the same as the widely available and industry applauded SN850 SSD. On the face of it, the difference is simply the ‘X’ prefix - Is that really much of a difference? I think it would be pretty fair to say that when the PCIe 4 generation of SSDs hit the consumer market, the one that made the BIGGEST (and earliest) splash was the WD Black SN850. Originally released in Autumn 2020, although it wasn’t the first PCIe4 M.2 SSD, it WAS the first commercially available drive to hit 7,000MB/s (followed incredibly closely by Samsung’s 980 Pro). Now, 2020 was quite a while ago now (give or take a pandemic or two) and in that time a wide variety of top tier (and indeed mid-low tier) brands have expanded in the PCIe 4 SSD tier, challenging the WD Black SSD in terms of performance, durability and price. The 2020 released WD Black SN850, although still hot in the basket of buyers of PS5 storage and regularly on sale during Black Friday and the like, is no longer the groundbreaking drive that it once was. And THIS with where the WD Black SN850X comes in. Now, the SN850X is NOT designed to be a replacement to the SN850. In fact, in recent months, we saw Western Digital roll out the WD Black SN770, a DRAMless, more efficient and more affordable alternative. The SN850X is designed to complete the product family in the PCIe4 M.2 NVMe tier and whereas the SN850 gains notoriety and licencing with the Sony PS5, the WD Black SN850X has its sights squarely on the Premium PC Gamer and Premium Performance tier exclusively (content creators, professional streamers and eSports). But is the WD Black SN850X really that much different? Is this a cash grab or is this a legitimate answer by WD to challengers in the PCIe4 SSD tier? Let’s find out.

Hello, Robbie . . . your numerous and thorough recommendations and tests led me to purchase a few things I'd not heard of until your reviews . . . Terramaster D5-300C (DAS), Nextorage 1TB NVMe, and 3 refurbed HDDs, WD Gold 8TB, HGST 8TB and 10 TB (yeah they can be a bit noisy, but I'm looking for longevity over all) plus I picked up a WD SN850X 2TB after your earlier reviews as it was cheaper than the older WD NVMes at the time. Thanks for all the great info! As a teacher who's been remote teaching since March 2020, I am in awe of your ability to speak knowledgeably and earnestly for long stretches of time. So glad I found your channel. Cheers from NYC

What are the requirements to look for when looking into the best thermal pad available for a PlayStation 5 4tb ssd plus Elecgear P5 NVMe Heatsink combination Would love to hear your take on it plus a video would be nice as well Are the Thermal Grizzly Carbonaut - Carbon Pads or Kritikal Thermal Pads Extreme Conductivity good options Or should I pay a little bit more for a pre installed ssd heatsink

Thanks for your great reviews. Just bougtht the 4TB version of this which is now selling for $299.99 on Western Digital and received 15% off for being a student and 16.5% off from a coupon site = 31.5% off. Just arrived a few hours ago. Really looking forward to setting it up. Heard many great things about it. As you know the Samsung 990 PRO doesn't have a 4TB version and also there were many problems with it and the Samsung 980 PRO. But these may have been solved with firmware updates. Just felt more secure buying this drive.

Agree, right now, WD is worth more than Samsung. At this time, Samsung 990 Pro about $20 more than WD Black SN850X per TB. Even if they were the same price, I would go with WD.

I bought the 1TB version for my PC not knowing it’s slower than the 2TB version. I have the heatsink SN850 in my PS5 and a 980 Pro as my PC’s boot drive. The 1TB SN850x is my extra storage/game drive and it’s still very fast in gaming. Control and Spider-Man Remastered load very close to the PS5 version load times

OT : Robbie, I'm a home NAS user but have always avoided remote access because the risks just outweighed the benefits. I recently explored Tailscale for remote access and it appears to work extremely well with far less risk than the built in remote access apps from QNAP and Synology, no open ports, and far more straight forward than garden variety VPN's. And far faster. It was dead easy to install and setup. I have no connection to Tailscale and no axe to grind but I found what seems like a brilliant solution to an old, complex problem. Thought you might want to check it out and maybe do a video.

@NASCopares May you or anyone else could please tell me if you have seen SN850X 4TB in your hand that, is 4TB single sided or it is double sided SSD? I am seeing conflicting comments, some says it is single sided and some saying it is double sided! Even in official data sheet they have mentioned exactly same thickness of SN850X regardless the capacity, that means according to data sheet 1TB and 4TB has same thickness, my laptop cannot accept double sided NVMe that's why I want to be sure if 4TB is one sided (I know 1 or 2TB are one sided)

@@THKJamesMaxx No it doesn't. All you're doing is deleting and saving games on your ssd. You would have to delete and save 300 times a day every day for 5 years for your ssd to fail. At most, you'll be deleting and saving a couple of times a week. TBW is unnecessary for ps5 users.
@teemuvesala9575
@teemuvesala9575 Жыл бұрын
@@richardoh3666 More like million times every day for 5 years... Save games don't take much space. You'd need to install and uninstall whole's drive's worth of data every day for 5 years to get it fail. And even then, often SSDs last lot longer than their rated TBW is. Rated TBW is just what the manufacturer is willing to cover by warranty in that 5 year time.

@@noverwolf9 Sadly Western Digital does not offer a heatsink for their currently on sale $494.99 from $699.99 4TB Black SN850X NVMe SSD only for their 1TB or 2TB variations Most likely I will try to find a PlayStation 5 compatible 4tb ssd elsewhere with a pre installed heatsink considering I lack the knowledge to make an informative decision thus avoid frying the ssd by acquiring an unreliable or a too thin thermal pad for it I was thinking of going with the Grizzly Thermal Carbonaut - Carbon Thermal Pad combining it with the Elecgear PS5 NVMe SSD Heatsink for better results
