In this video, I will show you step by step how to make a DIY knife. I will make the knife from the blade of the plane. This is the first time I will make a DIY knife with my own hands.
First of all, I will transfer the dimensions of the workpiece to paper and draw the outlines of the future knife on paper and then use glue to glue it onto the plywood. I will make a knife shape out of plywood to appreciate its comfort in the hand. I will cut the shape out of plywood on a band saw and use a sander to take away any irregularities.
When I am sure of the convenience of the knife blank, I will transfer it to the steel blank using spray paint. I don’t know the grade of steel, but I used this knife in an old plane, so for a knife I think it will come in handy.
Then, with a grinder, I will cut out the contour of the knife. To smooth out any irregularities, I use a belt sander, which was fixed with clamps to the table and a platform was made for it.
I use a wet stone grinder to sharpen my knife.
I use a gas torch and engine oil to harden the knife.
I will use a walnut to make a knife handle.
I will cut the shape of the handle on a band saw. Using epoxy glue and aluminum pins, I will secure the knife handle.
I will grind it on the bobbin sander and cover it with oil and wax. Thanks for watching.
