The fact that so many LGBT writers seem to think that having characters be LGBT forgives them of things like mass murder and terrorism says quite a bit about how the LGBT community sees itself.

More of this weird greying of villains. It's so annoying. Marvel and DC just copied each other's bad ideas. Harley and Ivy are unrecognizable as characters now. The most successful thing that's come out of this is an out-of-continuity animated TV show. And when they made a tie-in comic, guess what? People didn't buy it. It should be studied one day how social media tricked the comic book industry into supporting these bad ideas.

I utterly despise what they did to Harley, from her personality change to the horrendous costume change. Her Jester costume was probably my favourite costume in all of comics, and they changed it to just blonde hair with colored pigtails.

Them getting married in Avengers Mansion really bothers me. Mystique and Destiny should be in jail, not getting married in the original headquarters of Earths mightiest heroes. Modern comic fans seem to always identify with the villains. A human holding sign or wearing a red hat, who has never hurt anyone, is evil to them. A mutant who has murdered thousands or even millions of people is good, just by virtue of being born a minority. That's their worldview.

Mid-40s gay man here. Not a big fan of the Pride issues, but not sure I'm their target audience (probably more geared toward Gen-Zers). Anyway, something that I think might be good context is the concept of "queer joy" that's become prevalent in media in the last few years. It's a reaction to the gloom-and-doom that was thematic in a lot of previous LGBT representation, where if a character was depicted as LGBT, they were usually lonely, miserable, the target of hatred, disowned by family, predatory/psychotic, or dying of AIDS. It really felt like it was all you saw in movies and TV back when I was a young adult. Today maybe some creators are responding to those portrayals by going to the other extreme - where everything about being LGBT is fun and liberating and carefree, and that's where you get two gay characters PDA-ing in the middle of a fight to save the planet. Maybe not realistic, but perhaps those creator see it as cathartic for their audience. This would also explain why you don't see CIS hetero couples depicted this way - because there's nothing in previous depictions of them to respond to. I'm not saying this is good writing, or even good portrayals of LGBT characters, but I do think this may be where the sensibility that leads to these kinds of portrayals are coming from.

It's not good storytelling to dumb things down this way. 10:07 With Marvel being as talent-deficient as it is, I wouldn't be surprised if something like this happened. This is a small reminder to everyone here that Claremont was behind the very reveal of Nightcrawler's longtime girlfriend of the 70s, Amanda Sefton, being his adoptive sister catfishing him in 1980. He made them both date before he left the circus and long after the reveal and had them use their weird family relationships in their flirts. He had them even date again in the Nightcrawler solo run he wrote in 2014. All this to say, not all of Claremont's ideas were good and not all his reveals had the right setups or were good payoffs to read through.

A good friend of mine told me that in order for gay representation to actually impact, the characters have to show their sexuality. I was baffled due to not seeing straight characters, not particularly doing that. I then told him that mindset was boring. We want to see characters develop, be interesting, so to speak. The love junk is the last thing unless it's a love story. Hopefully, he changed his mind. I'm with you. It's bizarre that the Avengers associate themselves with big-time criminals. I'm of two minds about Claremont's intent for Mystique and Destiny. I think for 90% of their appearances, he was not writing them to be lesbians. Marvel Fanfare #40 is the real exception to this. In that issue, they go to some bizarre bondage club, Irene heavily implies Mystique is just as old as her. Mystique holds Destiny's face for several panels, calls her "my love," and then transforms into an elderly man so they can slow dance together. That would seem to go alone with Claremont's claims that his original plan was for Mystique to be an older man who was Destiny's husband and had shapeshifted to hide his identity. But after that, the only Claremont comics left with them were the Muir Island story where Destiny dies. If I had to guess, I'd say Claremont didn't intend them to be romantically involved until he wrote that Marvel Fanfare issue. It's also hard to gauge, because Claremont would use expressions like "my love" in non-romantic ways, making it unclear if that should really be interpreted the way most would interpret it today. For example, he would often have Mirage and Wolfsbane refer to each other as "my heart." But that was due to them having a psychic bond, not because of a romantic connection. In the era when they would call each other that, Mirage crushed on various boys and Wolfsbane was really into Cannonball.

There's a very fine line between Claremont kink and Claremont queer coding. Anybody who thinks he intended one thing may be surprised to learn he intended the other. I dunno. Maybe Claremont really just believed in very intense emotional relationships and western audiences don't know how to read that as anything other than sexual. I remember Jean and Ororo reuniting during Inferno and it coming off as very sexual-romantic, except it absolutely wasn't supposed to be. Remember that Claremont also wanted to turn Kitty black so that Storm could be her mom. (This was nixed.)

@@adamfrey4920 I think your comment about Western audiences is a huge part of it. Specifically, I'd say modern Western audiences. In the 80s, people wouldn't read affection between two same-sex people as being sexual most of the time. It was acceptable to be affectionate platonically, and being gay was extremely rare. Today, media has wildly disproportionate volumes of gay people, and the topic is constantly in the news. Everyone is conditioned to think the slightest bit of affection makes something sexual, and close friendships are basically ruined. It makes people wildly misinterpret media from over 15 years ago when they look at it today.

I think there was some subtext between her and Kitty in older Excalibur comics, but I don't know of anything outright until modern times. Similar to the subtext between Kitty and Magik. @kendershot I don't know if Claremont intended for Kitty and Rachel to be a thing in early Excalibur, but a lot of LGBTQ people read it that way. There's a difference between queer coding and queer reading. And the problem is that nobody can write two same sex characters in a strong friendship anymore because the Tumblr audience will interpret it as objectively gay. @@spinningtornado4543I vaguely remember that. Not the specifics, but that would just mean Nightcrawler isn’t her son. Doesn’t say anything about her and Destiny’s relationship. @spinningtornado4543
@spinningtornado4543 27 күн бұрын
@@BrettRBooth Claremont had Destiny be a woman born in the mid 1800 with a body that would age at the same rate as humans. Nightcrawler was 21 in 1980 and Marvel's sliding timescale has increased his birth year to be closer to 1990. In other words, Destiny was too old for that. Claremont said Mystique was female in her base form and had her powers always be shapeshifting on a cosmetics only level, which is why Sabretooth and Wolverine could always identify her by smell. He also once implied she could die from a cracked skull and didn't have a healing factor. This is also why she could only maintain Nick Fury's form for a few seconds when Nightcrawler was already an adult, as he was way taller than her and she can't create matter. From the characters to their power sets, nothing fits the idea of this being the original plan.

And two superheroines holding hands, looking like their frolicking in the flower fields while fighting? Well, don't that make for an exciting comic to read! Equate hyper identity politics with progressivism, so when anyone left-leaning, liberal, progressive, etc. wants to advocate for their political and social positions, they have no choice but to embrace hyper identity politics, whether they personally like it or not. The point is to call you a homophobe. I'm surprised you haven't figured that out yet. But also, you're talking about terrible writers. Even if they were trying to write something good, they couldn't.

Modern creatives don't know how to depict "queerness" without visual stereotypes and tropes. Having to shoehorn in scenes of them in bed, or making out just to show the characters are queer really destroys the storytelling IMO. Just once I wish these pride books would tell compelling story that drives characters or moves plots along in some way.

Ever since Mags revealed the thankfully rejected plans for trans Connor Kent I knew someone at DC (or Marvel) would take a page from that but at the very least be smart enough to apply it to a much more obscure character. Trans is trendy nowadays so I can see either DC or Marvel pulling that out of their hat. I'm also concerned for your friends and their kid depending how old the daughter really is and hopefully she wasn't a tomboy who was pressured into this decision like so many these days.

You saw the Mystique mini comic? Because it announced but in a silhouette, Aipt tweeted Declan Shavely is gonna be the writer. He Retweeted I can neither confirm and deny it. And it turns out he’s writing the Mystique comic. How feel about *Mystique written by Declan Shavely? I read Old Dog from Declan but I didn’t read his Thundercats. And there Sentinels comic by Alex Paknadel. I think Alex is decent writer. I still need to finish his All Against All comic. If his Sentinels comic is good. I believe it is worth it his Sentinels has a crossover with Geoffrey Thorne’s X Force. It makes perfect sense, cause Forge and Surge has fought a Sentinel name Nimrod. Imagine Nimrod is Xavier type mentor to the Sentinels.

I'm going to disagree with you a little bit here. Claremont may not have intially intended for Destiny and Mystique to be gay, but it is something that he began seeding in Uncanny X-Men #255 or 256. Destiny is even referred to as Mystique's "leman" or lover about 10 issues or so later. So they probably weren't originally created as lovers but it is something he intended going back to 1988 or '89. Especially since he wanted them to be Nightcrawler's parents. It is a retcon, but it goes back further than you suggest. Mr. & Mrs. X had Rogue and Gambit being obnoxiously in love during their adventures so there is a straight version of that trope. It's really hard for me to judge any of this stuff since I'm not gay, but I have see comments from gay people that agree with some of your points. But I've also seen comments from gay people who also don't believe that X-Men is "gay enough." At the end of the day, I just want goid comics. And if you're going to make established characters gay (tread carefully here) at least do it in a well thought out, believable way. It felt like Betsy and Rachel went fron straight to gay in like 0.2 seconds. Lije, here's Knights of X #1. Betsy and Rachel are hot for each other! Surprise!

I don't agree at all because just because you same sex people are living together don't mean that there's relationship going on sometimes good friends do live with each other you know and destiny was old as dirt at the time Yeah mystique might be fond of her because that's her friend and destiny probably treated her like a real person more so than anybody else but that doesn't necessarily mean that there's a lesbian relationship because if they really wanted to they could have did it they already did it with Northstar is kind of funny how you have to retroactively wait until years later when you already had you started introducing gay characters in the '80s was in the comments written in the '80s out from if that was the case I'll come they just didn't go ahead and fully dive into The reason why they're fully dive into it because it wasn't true you know Yes use flash there are straight people who live in the same house or our friends that sometimes do you take care of other people it's called a communion sometimes it's a community It happens not that uncommon you know for people to create their own makeshift family and with them being mutants it makes sense that you know mystique would have like a makeshift family you know that doesn't necessarily that it has to be her being lesbian or her and destiny being a couple just because some people saw it as that or just because that's what the intent that Chris Claremont wanted it to be doesn't mean that that's what it is you know the actions of years hasn't shown that into the 2010s then all of a sudden mystique was so gone-hole on destiny but destiny has been dead for almost damn near 30 something years and she wasn't thinking about destiny like that at all but not all of a sudden she's into destiny because some writers came out of nowhere was like who we need to have her being a lesbian No that doesn't make logical sense. It's the same thing as taking these classical straight characters who's been straight for years and now all of a sudden trying to say that they're gay when they appeared over a thousand comic books and we know what their personality is showing that they not into the same sex they're into the opposite sex It doesn't work that's why people reject it that's why this stuff will continue to get rejected and once again Why should we celebrate feelings who cares their feelings both destiny and mystique should be in jail or hunted like dogs in the street because of how terrible they are not because they're lesbians but because they're feelings you know

@treymykel I see a lot of people stretching to suggest certain characters were/are gay. Many times, it's wishful thinking or projection. And, yes, same sex people absolutely live together as roommates without being gay or even into one another if they are. My point wasn't that people were "reading into things." That's the purview of shippers, and it often gets in the way of what's really going on. I would characterize Betsy and Rachel in that camp. Or Kitty Pryde and the other half dozen women characters she's been shipped with. I'm just pointing out that even if you discount Destiny and Mystique living together, dressed only in robed and Mystique embracing Destiny in a way I wouldn't my mother or grandmother, there is still evidence that Claremont intended that relationship in the late 80s. His editor wouldn't let him, and this was 5-6 years before Northstar came out as gay. As far as the publisher was concerned, Destiny and Mystique were not lovers, never had been and never would be. Once Destiny was dead, it didn't matter. But that's the difference between authorial intent and editorial edict. Marvel editorial had final say, so they weren't bi-sexual at the time. So, yes, it is a retcon from an editorial standpoint, but it's disingenuous to say Claremont never intended it and is lying when he says he did.

Claremont wanted Nightmare to be Nightcrawler's father. He scrapped it and instead revealed that Nightcrawler was found next to the body of his dying mother in the X-Men/Doctor Strange crossover issue of 1980. Nightcrawler's biological mother was certified dead by the time he was an hour old and had been dead for 21 years by the time that reveal was made in the story. Only afterwards were Mystique and Destiny introduced in the story. What was that story you might ask ? Days of Future Past, where their direct actions led to a dystopian future with most of mutantkind dead, Nightcrawler being one of the first mutants to die following Senator Kelly's assassination. At the end of that two parter, Mystique vowed to kill all the X-Men, with no exceptions. She was still willing to kill all the X-Men in a story 4 years after DoFP with her vowing to train harder just so she can kill Nightcrawler to "save" Rogue. In other words, that original parentage wasn't the original one and the set up towards that kind of reveal was broken by the time the two characters were introduced into the story and everything that followed it kept opposing that kind of reveal and would have turned it into a terrible and badly put together twist. It is fitting for Claremont as he was the one to reveal Nightcrawler's long time girlfriend at the time was actually his adoptive sister catfishing him, which led to them still dating after that deal breaker of a reveal but now using their weird family relationship in their flirts.

Fantastic Four Epic Collection Vol. 4: P314, upper right panel- Sue and Reed RIchards cup each others' shoulders whilst fighting Ronan the Accuser. P293, lower left panel- Sue & Reed Richards hug each other whilst fighting the Kree Sentry (they are about to be inundated by a tidal wave). P283, lower right panel- The Thing protectively hugs Sue Richards as they are about to crash their pogo plane. There are other examples of physical contact that might be described as cradling, pulling up, or hugging during fight scenes, too numerous to count, including on p216 (middle panel); p214 (splash page); p215 (middle left panel).... And there, on p211, upper right panel, Reed and Sue Richards unambiguously hold hands whilst fighting Doctor Doom. I have not been able to hunt down the exact pages Perch is describing where apparently Rachel Summers and Betsey Braddock engage in a fight while constantly holding each others's hands. I assume there is something about it that makes it qualitatively unrealistic or impractical in his eyes in a way that, say, comparable physical contact as depicted in the works of Jack Kirby did not. I understand that, like Kirby, the artist who did this is making a stylistic choice, one that Perch finds exceptionally jarring and unrealistic in this instance. I will be looking for it to make my judgment... But Perch, you haven't convinced me yet.

While some of these LGBTQ+ reveals did come out of nowhere, it's not entirely unrealistic for people who were previously in heterosexual relationships to suddenly switch. My ex-girlfriend had only ever been in relationships with men when we got together, but she's now happily married to another woman. I totally agree that they shouldn't be making out in the middle of a fight though because that's just stupid, and Mystique and Destiny should still be treated as villains whether they're gay or not.

Celebrating and Glorifying Mystique for Pride month is like celebrating and glorifying Jeffrey Dahmer for Pride month. 6:15 Betsy Braddock seduce Cyclops in the 90’s comic and Jean was still alive in that 90’s. Rachel summer had romantic relationship with Nightcrawler. 7:50 Yes. Yes it is sad. That is Stagnation for ya. 11:54 Okay Perch. I am going to email you about an “modern” LGBT character that is taken seriously. I am not saying their name Because since that character is taken seriously everyone seem to forgot about the character. Wes made a video about that character. A year later, Wes does not remember the character at all. Like, does most people only remember just cringe stuff like that trans girl from Gotham whose has a baseball bat with trans flag around it? If LGBT characters are taken seriously will you remember them better or you only remember them for the cringe stuff? F*¢k, Maggs tries to make Connor Kent Trans still haunts me. Stitch from Teen Titans Academy still haunts me. But want to hold a positive memory of an LGBT that is taken seriously. You most likely gonna said Midnighter and Apollo. You need to expand your knowledge. I believe you already talk about NorthStar. *You should talk about Karma.* People comments on your channel, and claimed Zeb Wells retcons Karma’s sexuality. Even though that is false info, Chris Claremont always intended to make Karma as lesbian. Talk about her, Perch. Seriously, as much I don’t like Zeb Well’s ASM I will not tolerate make stuff up in his past work. It goes against common sense. I remember Anole being as hero during Quest of Magik arc. I still remember him before that. Even after that I remember his friendship with Rockslide. Thankfully Rockslide is dead so his sexuality won’t be retcon. I don’t remember what Anole do during 2010s and Krakoa era by Charles Jane Anders it is mostly cringe. Why hold that memory. I would hurt. I remember the cringe of Gwenpool coming out as Asexual. Which that make no sense she at all. *She made out with Kid Omega.* And Gwenpool use her 4th wall breaking powers to killed two guys during pride month. Not sure about Dreamer though. I haven’t stories about her. I do remember she in Jon Kent series. How did Supergirl CW treat Dreamer? Since it is CW it most likely not serious. Galaxy by Axelrod. Ugh she is not taken seriously in Hawkgirl comic. But we have read the actual Galaxy comic if she taken seriously. I doubt that. So make a video of lgbt characters that is taken seriously. It can be before the 2010’s. But don’t repeat the same people you already talk about.

The thing that really gets me about Gwenpool coming out as ace was that it was in an issue where she was looking for ways to remain relevant and keep appearing in books. She accomplished her mission and now gets to appear in at least a Pride special a year as well as being asexual doesn't stop you from still being in relationships. It's like the feeling you get some people use certain labels to get those brownie points when they really are straight because that isn't trendy enough. Really that whole issue of hers felt dangerously close to being actual meta about how modern comics and media in general treat "diverse" characters as marketing gimmicks but in the end was too oblivious/brainwashed to do it. Poor Jericho is a character that has been outed twice and both DC and fandom barely pay attention to him. He wasn't even utilized purely for a Pride cover for his dad's most recent series or even the current Titans who were his former friends/teammates but going by flashbacks from that series he may have been phased out. Honestly, I have a lot of respect for Priest's Deathstroke for him being careful to not make Jericho's sexuality his whole character (as well as Jericho himself not make a big deal about it or label it) and even touch on biphobia he faced and how it came in different forms, even a gay ex boyfriend. As much as DC and Marvel seem to like making characters Bisexual they seem reluctant to touch on how that group can be ostracized from the rest of the Pride community.

@@kelpietales4503 Yeah, that is entire existence of Gwenpool Strikes back. Because Leah Williams and Jordan White made Gwenpool into a mutant as the only way to to make her relevant. Even in Hellfire Gala party Jordan White self insert him talking to Gwenpool and he said “I help you to get in.” Ugh, I use to like Gwenpool but not anymore. Most the characters I like fallen to obscurity. Yet Gwenpool get the privilege to get be more relevant? I agree about Priest’s Deathstroke comic. He did treat Jericho with more respect. Like the last time I remember Jericho was mentioned was in Dark Crisis Young Justice by Meghan Fitzmartin. Meghan Fitzmartin does not know that Jericho shot Bart in the Kneecap while Jericho possessed Deathstroke’s body. Or Fitzmartin does not want to know that. As she doesn’t want LGBT to do bad or evil things. She literally Antagonize the reader in that comic. And Dave Wiesgloz helped her. I personally believe Obsidian, the Son of Alan Scott got it worse compare to Jericho. He is not doing much. Last time I saw him he was in Dark crisis tie in and the final issue of Tim Sheridan’s Alan Scott comic. Because DC wants to Retcon and push Original Alan Scott to be gay rather than elevating his son, Obsidian. Because Obsidian is not a recognizable name like Green Lantern. I don’t remember if Obsidian is in Geoff Johns’ current JSA. I do believe that is a new clown character guy is lgbt. I need to catch up.

@@commonsense5199 I adored Gwenpool in her original comic but since then no one has made her remotely as charming and just been Meta Fangirl Humor and obligatory "Girl Deadpool" who looks cuter and more original than Lady Deadpool so I would honestly be okay she remains obscure like other characters I care about until Chris Hastings comes back. I miss Priest. As much as I liked NTT Jericho I really like Rebirth Jericho too and was a lucky break from how DC abused him before. It's honestly hard to tell with Fitzmartin and Dark Crisis YJ. She not including how Jericho really shot Bart was her forgetting it or not wanting LGBT characters to do any wrong (Joey was at least corrupted/crazy from being possessed and in his Dad's head for years) yet has Cassie make a disparaging remark about Joey which given Cassie only knew Joey as "crazy and dangerous" I get unless this is a "Jericho is lame and has bad fashion" joke. I mean she forgot Secret, had Empress appear alongside villains, and seemingly retconned so much from YJ and Johns Titans. Jericho has been MIA in a lot of Deathstroke and Titans related material he should be prominent in like Shadow War and Dark Crisis, I'm not sure if writers are afraid to touch him because of his powers or just not popular with them or how to handle him now that he's officially bi/pan and one wrong move with him would be "problematic." Even before all that DC loved vilifying him Pre-Flashpoint/Early New 52 until Daniels and Priest tried to mend that. His most recent appearances was in Raven's seemingly pointless Tales of the Titans standalone by Toni Howard in a cameo at a baby shower (which given that issue looked like Raven helped her demon brother turn from Trigon but obviously didn't in Taylor's Titans makes me question it as well as Pantha being alive) and in a pinup for the recent Pride special but not a story (blessing there for how bad they can get). He and Obsidian are in a similar boat it seems, two LGBT characters that have loads of potential outside their sexualities but DC not doing anything with them. I do think it is especially frustrating Obsidian is pushed to the side because DC thought making his Green Lantern dad gay too would get more headlines. I haven't been following JSA closely but I did see the new heroes that felt like Obsidian and Jade expies. There was an article theorizing somewhere they would be phased out for Johns new heroes but why exactly outside complicating their father's sexuality I'm not sure.
