Today, the #MarineCorps is better prepared to serve as a naval expeditionary force-in-readiness alongside being better suited to support joint campaigns. While accelerating modernization is essential, our warfighting capabilities are only as effective as the Marines employing them. Our #Marines remain the key to sustaining and improving our competitive advantages.
Continued experimentation and learning will undoubtedly uncover additional refinements to improve the force. However, feedback from Fleet Marine Forces, fielding of new equipment and technologies, and experimentation of new tactics, have thus far have resulted in a Marine Corps that is better organized, trained and equipped to meet global challenges of the 21st century.

When I joined in 2016, I was trained by Afghan vets to fight an insurgency. When I got out in 2021, we were training ourselves to fight a conventional force. Every generation has a different war to prepare for, no one fight is the same. Ukraines fight today is a good example of what our Marines are preparing for. Cyber warfare, drones, and fucking trenches.

and many of those OIF/OEF vets were trained to fight a conventional force as well. I was trained to fight Russians in Europe, just like Ukraine (we craved that fight, and still do). We made up our counterinsurgency tactics on-the-fly in-country, no one back home taught us anything useful for that fight, so we figured it out. If you sent my unit to Ukraine today, we'd kick butt with the tricks we have (same guys we had in OIF/OEF). The tactics we used there would work surprisingly well in Ukraine too, with some adjustments. My unit was unconventional in every way, and we fought far more like the Ukrainians are fighting now, than other units did. I know most other units in OIF/OEF didn't fight like us though.

Oorah, I agree the whole world should be taking a lot of lessons from Ukraine. The deduction that maneuver warfare is over is not it. I'm certain many were saying the same in 1918 before 100 days. Also 16-21 I could barely hold my breath that long haha.

@@jolanderphilip We were in a war. We were good at it. We wanted a straight fight, as we spent so much time hunting down insurgents who wouldn't stand and fight. Sometimes they would, but not typically. We have the capability and know how to win this sort of fight. We signed up knowing we would go to teh front line, we chose it. My unit and others were unique. most units were not like us. We were smart and the best at what we did. We didn't fear anyone because no one on the battlefield was as good as us. And we didn't fight the way others expected (even our own forces were regularly shocked by how we dealt with things). We craved a fight where we could really show our abilities. We were there to win the war, and we wanted to be where ever we needed to be to win and end it. Guys who aren't there to fight, aren't there by choice, aren't good at their jobs, aren't total professionals, react differently, for sure. But we were professionals, the best, and we wanted a fight with a proper opponent. We lost people, other units were losing guys like crazy around us. but we lost fewer than most. and others liked working with us as their casualty rates dropped when working with us as well. And we always completed the mission.

Great, now let’s invest in safe housing and water for our Marines! No more black mold in the barracks. Drinking water that actually tests to a high quality standard. Decent, fresh cooked, healthy chow. I doesn’t matter what awesome hardware you have if your Marines aren’t healthy enough to perform at peak levels.

During the Trump administration, a worldwide inspection was started to address the state of military housing. I worked as a civilian for the corporation who has been tasked with sending teams out to every military installation worldwide to inspect every single private housing unit on every base (no barracks). I know these people, they are professional inspectors and property assessors. And we found a lot of crazy stuff already. But this process is going to take a lot of time.

We shall see how long this concept will last under the current political leadership we have in 2023. My time was 1960 -1965 and we started with WW 2 and Korean vintage gear and weaponry and we trained to fight the last war, Korean War. The only defensive warfare I learned was the hasty defensive formation after a successful attack on an enemy position. Once into a standard 0300 unit Training got much better indeed. Marine were prepared to fight with what we had at the time and improvise on the battlefields to make it all work.

@@giannileegalvan2669 You'd be surprised how many Marines are parachute qualified. Marine Raiders, Reconnaissance Marines are parachute qualified, as are many of the supporting Marines in these units who are also parachute qualified to ensure Raider/Recon units can make unit wide jumps if necessary. Additionally, many logistics Marines and intelligence Marines are also qualified parachutist. No doubt large unit jumps have a place on the battlefield and is why the Army retains large parachute units. However, for the Marine Corps, moving toward being a light, fast, flexible fighting force that comes from, and returns to the sea, parachute infantry battalions like the Army's are not the direction the service is moving toward. There are also other factors to consider for large parachute insertions. For instance, large unit jumps require strategic air lift from the Air Force (C-5s and C-17s) and a level of air superiority that will be hard to guarantee in a day of fast flying stealth jets and surface to air missiles.

Only time will tell if and when we go head to head with the PLA on the ground. I'm sure a light and lean force will be able reinforce our allies in the PAC East, not requiring a large logistical tail will help. The question is will the Corp be able to hold long enough without resupply? I don't expect the Navy or Airforce to be able to keep sealanes or air corridors open continuesly during a large scale conflict.

Is the decision to divest armor, cannon artillery, infantry and attack aviation being reconsidered in light of events and requests by the Ukrainian government which show that said systems are highly valued in contemporary combat operations?
@marines_combat_development
@marines_combat_development 11 ай бұрын
To the contrary. The fighting in Ukraine has validated Force Design 2030 to divesting of heavy assets and creating a light, amphibious force. There are dozens of articles online showcasing the effectiveness of HIMARS, shore to sea missile artillery, scouting, EW warfare and small teams with anti armor.
@DanDaly762
@DanDaly762 11 ай бұрын
@@marines_combat_development Not so fast CD&I. A couple of things: 1. The deduction that armor is irrelevant because many IFVs and tanks are being destroyed in Ukraine is the same as if we lived in 1943 and concluded that tanks are irrelevant because many were destroyed at Kursk. 2. Proponents of FD2030 and Chowder 2 want the same thing: A USMC capable of accomplishing the USMC roles of Title 10 and the MCTL; namely seizure of key terrain to enable a naval campaign, and by extension the joint force. Sometimes that key terrain, no matter how small, may have a combined arms division defending it. In this case the best way to counter is by being a well balanced combined arms force. I believe FD2030 and Chowder 2 both believe that, the difference is FD2030 views a 'balanced' force as one super focused on ISR and A2AD. That's not going to defeat a well-equipped adversary as made evident in Ukraine. Our friends in the infantry need tanks and cannon artillery to help them to victory.
@marines_combat_development
@marines_combat_development 11 ай бұрын
@@DanDaly762 1. No where in the reply was it stated or implied that armor is irrelevant. What was stated was "The fighting in Ukraine has validated Force Design 2030 to divesting of heavy assets and creating a light, amphibious force. There are dozens of articles online showcasing the effectiveness of HIMARS, shore to sea missile artillery, scouting, EW warfare and small teams with anti armor." The M1A1 Abrams tank with its 120mm main gun provided powerful and accurate mobile firepower. However, increasingly lethal and low-cost anti-armor weapons have become more and more prolific on the battlefield. Even before Force Design 2030, the viability of retaining tanks by the Marine Corps because of their logistics requirements, survivability on the battlefield and cost to purchase, upgrade, and maintain had already been raised as a concern by Congress and several previous commandants. In 1999 during his confirmation hearing Gen. Charles Krulak (31st Commandant, 1995-1999) stated he’d prefer to rid the Marine Corps of tanks.3 Before Krulak, General Robert H. Barrow (27th Commandant, 1979-1983) refused to consider purchasing tanks during his term from 1979-1983. General Alfred M. Gray Jr. (29th Commandant, 1987-1991) and General Carl E. Mundy Jr. (30th Commandant, 1991-1995) debated the strengths and weaknesses of removing tanks from the Marine Corps inventory and requesting armor support from the Army when needed. In 2019 the Marine Corps inventory consisted of older M1A1 Abrams Main Battle Tanks (MBT). The Marine Corps variant was three generations behind the US Army’s M1A2 SEPv4 variant. The cost to upgrade and/or purchase new tanks for the Marine Corps was estimated to be in the tens of millions of dollars. Additionally, associated engineering and logistics requirements were immense. One tank battalion typically contained 56 M1A1 MBTs. However, the refueling vehicles needed, obstacle-breaching and bridging equipment, tank retrievers, and other heavy engineering capabilities added on significant logistics burdens and associated financial constraints. If the Marine Corps had procured the money to upgrade the tanks to match their Army counterparts, the tanks would have weighed in excess of 80 tons. Far too heavy to be transported by the Navy’s Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) for ship to shore operations and reducing transport capability of Air Force strategic lift. Finally, a tank battalion would require significant transportation assets to arrive on the battlefield. Tanks would have needed to be transported by rail from bases to shipyards with ships transporting them to areas near the front lines. During this transportation timeframe on water the threat of enemy submarine, missile and air attack is heightened. Similar to how German U-boats attacked allied shipping during World War II in the Atlantic. The elimination of needing to transport tanks and their associated support vehicles greatly reduces potential casualties and destruction of equipment and freeing up transportation assets for other missions. Instead, with the approval of Congress, the Marine Corps chose to divest of the M1A1 MBTs and reallocate all funding associated with the vehicles and redirect the money to other modernization efforts. When paired with supporting infantry, tanks can provide incredible mobile fire, particularly in urban combat situations. However, with the Marine Corps moving to be a lighter, smaller, more flexible and faster shock force, the decision was made to remove tanks. The Marine Corps is returning to its naval roots of fighting from and returning to the sea, it is not a second land Army. 2. The Marine Corps is quickly becoming optimally balanced to better support the Navy by amphibious by becoming light and shedding legacy capabilities used in over 20 years of combat in the Middle East. The Marine Corps is NOT a second land army. We are designing, developing and experimenting to return to being a force that fights from and returns to the sea in support of the Navy, and by extension, the Joint Force.

Force Design 2030 is supposed to make the Corps lighter, faster and more lethal. How are we supposed to be prepared for China if we can’t evacuate an embassy or respond to an earthquake?

@@Doc_Holiday. Please provide a link that states the Rangers responded (this is news to us). Reports indicated that the Immediate Response Force from the 82nd Airborne Division was placed on standby but did not respond to Sudan. Rather, Special Operations forces provided initial response with Marines assisting the Navy during the Non Combatant Evacuation in port. The Marine Corps has its own organic KC-130s that are operated and maintained by Marines. The Army requires the Air Force to provide fixed wing transport for medium and heavy lift needs. The 82nd's IRF is built on the premises of 3 battalions making up the brigade with one battalion able to deploy within 18 hours. The Marine Expeditionary Units on the other hand are already forward deployed in their respective areas of operations and carry infantry, fighter jets, attack helicopters, logistics assets, cyber warfare capabilities, artillery and enough supplies to sustain themselves for 15 days of continuous operations. Comparing the IRF to a MEU is not the same thing.
@Doc_Holiday.
@Doc_Holiday. Жыл бұрын
@@marines_combat_development I will supply a link soon as per your request. But the Rangers were also forward deployed in the AO. Now the 82nd did have a battalion leave in immediate response to the AO after 3rd Special Forces Group with elements of the CIA planning the evacuation before and after landing. With fighting breaking out on the 15th of April the US government started planning for worst case scenarios and evacuations. By April 20th the initial stages began. Now a Company of ODA (Green Berets) from 3rd Group and an element of Seal Team6 evacuated the embassy with the 82nd/ Rangers as backup. After all was done 5th Fleet stayed to help with any follow on problems. Now the Marines are very capable unit but lacked in amphibious ships to land the Marines. As pointed out by Secretary of Defense. Which I’m sure will be remedied. As for the Capability of the U.S Army you know full well they have the largest budget of all the branches. We have Forward deployed bases all over the globe. In Ft. Bragg alone they have a dedicated Airforce unit stacked with C-130s and C17s on Standby for the 82nd Airborne/ Special Forces which the budget allows for to be IRF for the USA. Bottom line it comes down to money and training. Marines do a hell of a job but lack the support at times. Just my opinion

WW2 tanks were instrumental for beach landings because air power wasn't to the point where it was precise enough to deal with a target a tank of the time would be capable of defeating. With our precision air launched munitions and the prevalence and mass distribution of anti tank weaponry there is no need to bring a tank to fight another tanks nor is there a need to spend the resources to bring a tank onto the shore to defeat a bunker. Mobile fire support has grown up and it has grown wings.
