We Are Skateboarders is a 'as real as it gets' documentation of the soul of skateboarding, and how some of the legendary skateboarders feel its soul has changed over the years.
We Are Skateboarders is a 'as real as it gets' documentation of the soul of skateboarding, and how some of the legendary skateboarders feel its soul has changed over the years. Since the mainstream has come to play a major role in the skateboard industry, there has been much dispute amongst skateboarders if skateboarding is loosing its purity and status as a core activity. The film tackles this issue with enlightening interviews from famous skateboarders such as Lance Mountain, Greg Lutzka, Rob Dyrdek, Peter Smolik, and Christian Hosoi, creating the most legitimate discussion towards the controversy in the skateboarding industry. Shot in Los Angeles, and NYC.

As someone who was diagnosed with high functioning autism later in life, I can totally see the value of introducing these kids to a board. Sure, it's not going to be for everyone, but my skateboard was my therapist long before I knew I needed one. I could use it to connect with people and to retreat back in my own bubble on a whim. Without it, I doubt I would've had the social connections, friends and experiences that everyone craves in their formative years. Granted, I was never as sensitive to overstimulation as some others on the spectrum are, but the sounds of skateboarding actually helped it for me; drowning out the cacophony of the world around me with a familiar metal on concrete grind. And the clacking of the wheels on a tiled ground always soothed me.

Me too, and im sure many of my skate friends as well. I knew I would struggle without skating in my life, then the nightmare happened. At 29, after a good run of 16 years, I got a serious injury. This one I wasn't recovering from. Destroyed 3 discs in back which is bad enough, but 2 of what are half discs bulge into my nerves. Like a hit from stun gun. It's no surprise my life started unravelling. This was 20 years ago. I've been on a better path for 10 years, but still in agony and can't skate. Been tough with all these new parks popping up and plazas. I would give my left nut to skate these plaza parks. I remember saying 25 to 30 years ago plaza style would be better than usual parks they built. Now they do. Also when ya kids want to get into skating and go to parks. Look after yourselves everyone. When is gone it sucks big time.

I really enjoyed that, brings back those memories......some friends left, some passed away (Rob Greenacre, 24), but the memories are still there and will never leave "The feeling of rolling down the street" I've been having a rough time this christmas and that sentence brought a big smile to my face and overall when remembering those times. The ending with the kids is good, something important for the kids :) Thanks

I've been sk8in since 1985 and I have never cared for being on camera, contests or being sponsored. Once you start showing off for chick's and cameras you are outside of being in the moment. Most people wanna take their phone with them so they a take pics of everything. I leave my phone in the truck so I can be in the moment with everything i do which is original why I started sk8ing and continue to do so today. Keep shreddin homies🤙😎

Your edit is really good mate, I love that hippy jump over the chain. It’s tough when you can’t get out to skate but just keep plugging away, it’ll be summer soon. As for the street part, I’d keep going with it when you can. All the best skate videos are delayed, look at how long lakais fully flared kept getting pushed back.

God bless the guys who, in the greatest moment of enlightment, screwed some Wheels to a Wooden plank. Nobody on earth for sure, not Even the sharpest seer could have predicted how huge, diverse and Fun SK8 would become. Counter-cultural or nor, marketable or not, cool or uncool...it doesn't matter. It is the most thrilling and Fun thing on earth, which some radicals could easily mistrue as an understatement but it is certainly not that. The core of skate is Fun and thrill, skate your problems away and go Home a sore-but-happy man through such process You develop skills, build up courage, make Friends, share some music and else, which makes u a better person.

I dont agree on hating so much on those who made money and grew a business. Whining about making money ruins skating and corporate people telling you whst to do is not original. How horrible you get to pay the bills and skate..any other job is going to tell you what to do without the joy of skating and traveling. Its not selling out its using whst you love to provide. Just like in punk rock . Mike ness greg graffin.

1:09:12 Commercial companies are not keeping skateboarding alive. The skateboarder is. The companies need the skateboarder. Sadly like all things, however once the OGs are gone the people left, will be pencil pushers. Just like pilots used to control the aviation industry. Or Henry Ford II getting MacNamara (not a car guy) as their CEO. Businesses eventually turn to business. Sickos if you ask me. Meanwhile, there was a lot of good soul in this video. Best part was the taser story.

Was it just me or did a lot of the pros in this video come across like jocks? Skateboarding has definitely evolved since the beginning to the era of this film. I am glad we have kept evolving past whatever this was. Lance and Mark seemed to get it right but the rest of the video had me cringing a lot.

Why skaters always have to say skateboard is not a sport, it's the dumest thing. Because it's an art form, this do not mean it's not a sport. Many sports are an art form like figure skating for example. If golf, range shooting and darts are sports, picking my nose must be one too, so why not skateboarding ?

I definitely get what your saying. @16:28 "you're your own artist, that's something special and I feel like a lot of the people doing it now aren't doing it for that reason". This is a great documentary with some legendary skaters. I have to say that a lot of this "back in my day....." talk is kinda lame and self righteous. Some of these guys act like they're somehow more special because they happened to be born 40 years ago. There's no right or wrong reason to skate. If someone likes to skate then who cares why they started or if they're an "artist" or "rebel". Some of these guys need to seriously get over themselves and stop acting like the gatekeepers of cool.

Oh, and Rob Dyrdek complaining about the over commercialization of skating is so ironic it's comical. How many shows does/did he have on MTV? He's commercialized skating and made it mainstream as much as anyone. Dude lacks any self awareness.
