I would highly recommend opening your second GF and using it. CO2 tubes have a shelf life even if they are not used. Might work out better to go vertical in your laser corner and stack the units on a custom built shelving unit and then use the space above to store supplies for the laser and a small set of cutting boards so they are at your finger tips if you need to run a small job or just get one started. Love the content by the way very helpful.

Another bit of help: Boat / RV storage places. You can get an enclosed lockable rental unit with power for less than the price per month of an official storage lot. The one I use near Houston has many of the places used by welders, plumbers, and cabinet makers.

1. make sure you are using your new Glowforge and store the older one if needed. You want to make sure to get some use out of it while it is under warranty. 2. Consider vertical spaces. Shelves make a big difference in storage. One overlooked storage option is shelves above where you can reach for things you want to store longer term. You could even stack your two Glowforges so you can access them both and make use of them to reduce your production time.

With my business I purchased an open frame style laser. 1)Portable if need be 2) I can put it on full slab lumber. Signs, counter tops, butcher blocks etc. I am working on an order for a very large 100+ watt laser to do different items and be able to diversify my sales. Like you guys I started in couple hundred square feet. Now I have 5000 square feet. Cnc, lasers spray booth, epoxy room etc. Lol. Good luck guys! Send me a message if you would like 30 years of advice from a guy who built from nothing into more than I can handle at times. There are tricks to selling and managing too many sales. Lol. 👍

Congrats on the business doing well. I hope to upgrade my Glowforge to something like an Epilog someday. They would allow for larger cutting boards and about 3-5 times faster! lol. On another note, I found that the Better Home and Gardens 8 cube organizers from Walmart make a great table for a Glowforge while giving you tons of storage underneath! We put two of them, one in front of the other, laid down horizontally and it works GREAT! Just in case you ever look for another table/storage solution. :)

I think you guys should look at other lasers. The glowforge is a great hobby laser but for production you can get cheaper options with more power and speed. I have used about 8 different setups and the glowforge is great for the beginner, but I would never use it for a business. Also you guys seem pretty smart, one hard part about the glowforge is it limits what you as the user can do because it is locked down. Check out Boss Laser or even look at 80w Ebay lasers. I have been running a 80w Ebay for four years with minimal issues. I think I paid 3k for my whole setup and it is double the size and power of what you have. Also it's pretty simple so the two times I have had issues I was able to fix it myself, no send off and wait to be fixed.

Being the husband of a woman that does crafts ( that are consuming the house ) I can appreciate the "Need" for storage. BUT 5x10 cost $75 a month? ( does where I live ) and you currently have a glow forge on the floor? why not place the NEW glow forge box under the one being used? Not that I am nit picking, but the USE of the space you have is minimal.. I see cluttered, by volume mostly empty shelves. I see gobs of space under tables. That storage locker is $900 a YEAR.. that goes a long way in increasing storage efficiency, vs another place to stack stuff. look at 1:43 (might as well be empty ) and then goto one of the big box lumber stores ( blue or orange ) and see how they use space. $900 is $900 and being in the same boat you are in, I think you need to invest more in solutions for your current space vs another space to not use efficiently. Love your videos!

Considering Texas is home for Davis and they are in an Air National Guard unit.... I highly recommend using their VA loan benifit to purchase a home with space already or space to build...if they choose to that is...they can sell it later and use the VA loan more than once; which is not new. However; get the advice from an accountant for tax info, the VA and SBA for limitations in their area.

There are other laser engravers that are better working than a GF. I'm planning on buying a Thunder one. In the future when I have more $, I plan to get an Epilog. I own my house. The basement will be where I will run the laser. I plan to get a wood cnc router and eventually a laser plasma machine which I plan to keep in the garage. Honestly hate my house but we bought it years ago when it was a repo so we're remodeling it. If my business takes off, we plan to move preferably 1 floor house with a workshop outside so my dogs can go in and out all day and hopefully on acreage. I do not want a commercial space at all. I just want a workshop along with the house.

As a business owner that rented a commercial space for running a retail shop, then bought a retail space for that business, then closed the retail business and moved our home to a place zoned to allow work from home and had space for a large work shop: skip to the last step if at all possible. You don't need a retail space so why rent a commercial space at all? Find a property with some land that can be your home and business. The commute will be great!

Knucklehead here. That laser is a bit of a setback imo. Unused and zero ROI and it isn't cheap. Easily a month or 2 on shop space which will be a game changer when you make that leap. I enjoy your content, so this comment is not meant to be critical. However, I wonder why you chose to get two Glowforge lasers, which are both cloud-based? If you lose internet connectivity for any reason, or if Glowforge were to go out of business, you're out of luck. I can understand wanting to stay with something that is familiar, in the same ecosystem, but if the reason you got this is for backup and redundancy, I think you would be better served by something that does not require internet connectivity. Just my humble opinion. I wish you both well in your future endeavors.

I expanded my shop last October to 77080 area safe and good rates , only thought but I share my 1200sq ft place with another cutting rent in 1/2 . also good idea on climate control just let you know if storing the raw wood products will need to acclimate to the Garage 2 weeks before working it . I ship my hard woods in from another state cheaper and wait 2 weeks wood still has cells in it even after air or Kiln drying that expand contract so be careful with wood storage . I have some 10x5x5 area currently storing Green hard woods for turning they are mixed with wood shavings as well ends sealed turned rotated every few weeks . Houston humidity/temps are hard on wood storage , if storing "raw wood planking " sticker and band or weights on top . been in wood working for some 25 years mainly east coast if ever want come by see my set up your welcome CrazyBeaUSA bob C

Knucklehead commenter here: 2 comments. Glowforge is extremely overpriced, and laser tubes can go bad in storage. For example, you could get a gigantic 130 watt machine with a 35"x55" working area for the price of a glowforge pro. Of course there are smaller options too, that would actually fit in your house.

Tony, you’re only looking at price and size/wattage! You’re smart enough to know there are TONS of variables here... ease of use, replacement parts, customer service, learning curve, forum community, and so much more. Those may not matter to you, but they’re super important to us. Don’t make a blanket statement about being overpriced when you haven’t considered everyone’s perspective

@@jennieanddavis Sure, all those are good points. But the generic chinese machines are all made basically with the same parts, so think of it like open source software. All the parts can be had on ebay, Amazon, or from a variety of suppliers. I'm not trying to schill the place I bought mine from, but they back it up with a 2 year warranty and have the parts in stock. Most everything is easy to replace, and you don't have to send it back to the factory for minor repairs. Plus you can choose from the bundled software or a couple better options.

Oh man, I didn't realize you guys were using Glowforge. I ran a K40 in my old apartment and oy vey.... running two CO2 lasers working wood in a living space - you have a much better relationship than me and my spouse. It's your business, but in my business I would never use Glowforge. You just get so much more when you buy a "China kit laser" aka the 80 watter that they sell and then fix the quirks. Than again, I'm also the guy who laser engraved hot dogs with fortune cookie text (don't do this, it smells wretched).

Glow forges are a ripoff in my opinion. I use a $300 ortur laser master and it works great.

That’s great! Glad you found a solution for your business. We just have different priorities - money isn’t nearly as important to us with this kind of investment.

I've been watching alot of your videos. your good at building stuff but wtf you say your not ready for commercial space and then go and buy a 5,000 and up glowforge just to put it in a storage unit that your also paying for that makes no sense at all.

Hey Nemo, check out the books ‘E Myth’ and ‘4 hour work week’. You can’t think about business money like you think about your personal finances. It’s all about cash flow and money in/out. There’s a whole new mindset you have to adopt if you want to scale a business
