Life too short for long KZfaq videos? See the ’Interesting bits and go-to sections’ timings below.
SAFETY FIRST: Valve guitar amplifiers contain potentially lethal voltages that can KILL you completely and utterly dead. Dan and I did not carry out any work around the high voltage aspect. We connected everything up before Chris took over to do the plugged-in tests and safety checks.
Please DO NOT ATTEMPT any work inside any amplifier unless you are qualified to do so. So with that covered…
In this episode we board the TPS charabanc and head north, following tales of a near-hermit-like being, who, in return for crossing his palm with silver, would educate us in ye olde ways of building tube amps. Or valves if you’re British.
Thusly, we crossed river and ravine before happening on the opening of a great cave, strewn with the carcasses of dead amps the souls of those who had abandoned them. Uttering the magic words, we were granted entry and following a soldering initiation test, were festooned with the jewels of the hermit’s brain. Or if you’d prefer…
Chris Fantana of Rift Amps walks us through building a couple of Fender 5E3 Deluxe clones.
We then return to Schwangri-La and plug ‘em in.
Find Chris and Rift at www.riftamps.com/
A word on cabs and speakers. Chris has a cabinet supplier who builds and covers the cabs, so we don’t get into that in this video - it’s a step too far for a single day! The choice of tweed or Tolex is purely cosmetic - we thought we’d have one of both.
The speakers themselves are WGS G12Q. We might get into trying different things as time goes on…
If you like the music tracks over the video, they're available here: www.thatpedalshowstore.com/co...

12:00 - the purpose of flux isn't to facilitate heat transfer, but to disperse surface contamination and oxides on the joint surface. In the absence of flux, a joint will almost always end up dry, because pure solder will just sit in a blob rather than wetting onto the joint surfaces. If in doubt, add more flux.

Hi TPS gang! Having just built the same circuit myself- I would be fascinated to see how D&M approach a TPS Wet/Dry rig using this specific amp. Due to its low volume/headroom traits, it would be really cool to see how they would build a rig to accommodate this very specific sounding of amp circuit in that wet/dry environment. I loved Dan's approach a year or two back when he had his lazy Jay only seeing guitar and treble booster, while EVERYTHING else went to another high head room amp (matchless???). The Lazy J is still a much higher headroom amp. Would love to see these amps come back into the show in any capacity. Lots of post-pandemic hobbyists building amps/pedals/guitars trying to find creative ways to use them.

Grew up in the 70's and early 80's as a kid/teen building all kinds of electronic kits. Went through 3 years of night school learning my certificate of advanced electronics, twice weekly after work, riding a pushbike in the rain.....anyway I have made heaps of amps, pedals, mixer boards etc etc over the years, both from scratch and as kits. The self satisfaction of making your "own' gear is enormous. All that learning and I am still just a hobbyist electronics guy.

Random update. My typical commute to work involves driving to the commuter rail station and taking the train in to a city. This morning I had to drop my wife at the airport so I ended up driving to work and I parked in a nearby garage. So without giving it a thought, when I left work to head home I walked to the train station and got on the train and headed home. Sinking feeling as i reached the parking lot and it dawned on me that my car is back at work. I’m now sitting on a cold outdoor commuter rail bench waiting what will be 30-40 minutes for a return train to take me back in to collect my car to finally turn around and drive back home during rush hour. This is my day. At least I have a new TPS episode to watch on my bench. And for that I am truly thankful. Cheers,

The 5e3 is just... Amazing. That amp basically changed my perspective on pedal (I no longer use a pedalboard) and reverb (I don't use it either) just setting an amp to a "home base" at 8 or 7, then punching it, turning it to 10 is every sound I want, perfect session and live amps. Great show guys

I've paused at the 5:45 mark where Mick says "we will get to amp building in a minute, I promise" to say this: please keep talking! Keep asking these types of questions. This information is really interesting, useful and helpful. And I reckon it makes a lot of sense to get a foundational understanding about amps and valves before you go ahead and build one. There's bound to be people commenting that you should have got to the point quicker, but I like the introductory interrogation.

Fantastic episode Mick and Dan (and Chris), especially as I bought all the components to build a 5e3 from scratch a year ago but because of life issues, I'm only just about to start the build! Would love to hear some more playing through the two amps, especially as you haven't yet hit on the idiosyncrasies of the Tweed Deluxe and its interactive volume and tone controls. They all affect each other. So with the amp dimed, the tone stack is basically out of the circuit. Also, the tone has maximum brightness around 9, after which it becomes darker... And to get the cleaner tones (dare I say headroom) that you guys always love, you would have the main input volume at say 2 to 3, as you were demonstrating, but the second volume would be raised to between 8 or 9 and maximum to fatten the sound. For those who would like to understand more about this unique amp's operation, another amp manufacturer, Rondo, has this superb video (not to promote his amps at all as I've never even seen one live) -- kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jLRiqdR03cfJc2Q.html Keep up the great work!

Great episode. Makes me want to build my own 5e3 just to try something you guys didn’t which is that when plugging into channel one with the volume down, dime the channel volume of channel two and you may notice a change in tone and fatness. Works the other way as well apparently without it even being jumpered at the inputs which I’d love to see you do as well with these amps. Apparently the non-jumpered volume trick works due to microphonics in the wiring.

Came here to make sure someone pointed this out. They went straight for the pedals, but there is so much you can get out of this amp with just different combinations of knows, before even jumping comes into play. There is a sweet 30 minute KZfaq video about the fender tweed where he talks about it for most of the video and then plays.

Wow, I always wanted to do this but the cost of parts meant it wasn't much cheaper, plus I'd probably electrocute myself in the process! Looking forward to watching this...

Modulus Amplification has 5e3 chassis kits for a reasonable price. You might find the cost of a decent pine cabinet surprising though. A 5e3 needs that to sound proper!

Just from an andragogy sense, this is how proper adult education is done, its practical, can encompass different learning styles and experience and results are competency-based not mere regurgitation of facts. And TPS is itself a kind of andragogy teaching/learning experience!

Did I spy Mick and Dan both holding it together when he said "touch the tips together"??? Well done guys, your restraint was almost admirable too, that is until the "that's what she said" joke came flying out shortly thereafter. It was hilarious on this end, I'll tell you that. Great show guys, thanks again.

Dan’s like the kid who read ahead in the textbook so he can raise his hand at every question... :))) I’d love to ask, if you buy the same components and hand wire a good amp, what’s the difference to buying one of the same parts? Is it like Guitars where experience is sometimes worth the price tag?

My time is cheap so I came out a few bucks ahead on my tweed build compared to buying one. There are worse ways to spend time, I enjoyed the assembly. Soldering is one of the few useful skills I acquired in my misspent youth, so that helped but its not hard. Wire dress gets really important on high gain amps so you want your skills first to avoid noise issues. Tweeds are real simple, like cribbed from that RCA manual probably, good for a first unit. I chose a 5e5 for the fatter tone but the circuit is almost the same.
