I've always thought our planet's name was something tongue-in-cheek from our remote ancestors. Yes, earth is dirt, but the original name, Terra Firma (Solid Ground) for a water world is an oxymoron worthy of praise.
@Nempo139 ай бұрын
You can't help but assume it was intentional really. Humans have ALWAYS been little shits like this. One of the Roman Emperor's had a barge in the middle of a lake with insanely long bridges out to it. We are talking like 3rd of a mile long bridges you have to walk on to get to it in ancient Rome here. The barge's name when translated was something like "Dry Water" or "Parched Bar" depending on which recounting you come across. It was a boat on a lake and required you to walk along bridges that sometimes sagged enough to get your damn feet wet (and they were built that way ON PURPOSE). Others simply used small boats to get to it. It was a big party boat for the upper class.
@Raggmopp-xl7yf9 ай бұрын

@Iluvantir9 ай бұрын
Ah, but is "earth" - that which you put seeds in and grows plants - named for the Earth (planet), or visa versa? And those who used "Terra Firma", did they know that the Earth is covered more in water than dry land? Got to wonder even then, though: hardly anything "firm" about "Terra" when it shakes with Earthquakes all the time... Okay, we're idiots who can't name things. Let's just keep it simple. Our world is called Dirt, our moon is called Moon. And our sun is called Sun. We've got better things to do... like building bigger guns!

It's not just a giant gun, it's an art installation with practical applications. Another thing to consider, If the scale is 100:1 (with the .3" bullet becoming a 30" shell) then the barrel of the replica would be 200ft and the overall length would be 362.5ft. (I did have to look up some specifics) That would be a truly giant gun. A wondrous sight to behold.

Side note about that 30-inch gun story: Humans did indeed build a gun that big, although it wasn't a scaled-up M1. When humanity brought out the giant fighting robots to beat the reapers, the council were asking them why they hadn't let the rest of the galaxy know they had giant fighting robots and the human councilor looks bewildered, because the giant fighting robots were in the first contact package, but everyone else assumed they were movies lmao.
