This morning I was thinking about how interesting it would be to hear what your take is on protein intake in the context of finding a balance between hypertrophy and longevity, sparked by me watching Plant Chompers’ video on protein quality and the interview with Greger. So, is there even a balance or does anabolism inevitably reduce longevity? What is the effect of higher protein intake with methionine restriction on hypertrophy? What about the effect of lower protein intakes on hypertrophy? Greger stated in the interview that higher protein intakes are not necessary and it is simply a “myth”. Comments on that? Do slower rates of muscle gain yield lower mortality in the long-term? I’d be very interested to hear your thoughts on this. Appreciate your work.

I found Dr. Gregor as I was researching for foods that lowered inflammation. I had Ulcerative Colitis really bad. Doctors wanted to remove my colon. I had this crazy thought that food should help (the Doctors told me it wouldn't help. The only thing that would help is to lower fiber, they said). I went plant based, and I am celebrating 5 years of remission this year. I eat so much fiber now! How can some Doctors be so smart, and be so stupid at the same time?

I was a closet vegan from 2011 until 2016. And when I started listening to Dr Greger in 2016 I became so inspired to learn what I can about nutrition. I started organizing my thoughts on a site called VeganWalk, because, like Greger, I loved to walk and even have a treadmill under my stand-up desk. Then in 2017 I started VeganLinked which was more focused on videoing other people instead of myself. And I aspired right away to video doctors doing presentations and maybe meet him one day. I even thought if I ever got to meet him I would be so starstruck I might be something stupid. I've met him a handful of time since though and maintained my cool. I have some really great videos of him doing Q&A's, Presentations, and one of my all-time favorites is one where he gets the vegan Hall of Fame award. NutritionFacts asked me to come out and help shoot his debut talk on how not to diet. I kept rolling after the talk and captured him getting the award. I acquired other people's camera angles and was able to piece it together pretty sweet. I think he deserves a Nobel Peace prize.

Originally through preaching and advertising, progressing into universities and medical institutions, and nowadays making use of the digital tools available through social media and its own army of self publishers and influencers. Nothing eye opening or earth shattering. Just simple reality as expected. In comparison, the beef industry is an amateuristic upstart. The patient also lost 160 lb and had multiple other life-changing improvements. I was simply asking about that and hoping that somebody on this side of the diet Spectrum was aware of that, would look into it, and have some answers I'm trying to study and learn and I see that there's people who drastically improve their health and cure themselves of many things using the plant-based diet and then I see the same thing as from people who were already trying to plant-based diet for years or decades, and they cured all their ailments by going carnivore. And I have seen people saying the only experience negative results from either diet as well. I think there's too much presumption, arrogance, and attacking going on on both sides of the diet information debate. I am an omnivore but really admire Dr Greger. I especially admire his honesty about how he pays himself from his foundation pointing out it's completely voluntary and how his books don't increase his income. A truly admirable man. I won't be going vegan any time soon but appreciate the advice given by vegan advocates such as Dr Greger and Dr McDougall who do on rare occasions say things such as if you are going to eat meat then make it lean and boil it so it doesn't have any extra problems. Edit: love seeing the Dr Greger groupies.

I'm so curious why you won't be going vegan anytime soon, what's holding you back?
@annoyedaussie3942
@annoyedaussie3942 3 ай бұрын
@VeganLinked well I don't have any ethical issues eating meat although I do think factory farms could be better regulated. As far as health aspects there's no reason to completely remove animal products, reducing the amount of animal products is probably a good idea and some amount of fish as long as not deep fried seems to be just as good as no animal products for health. I follow a few of the vegan doctors etc. to some extent to help remind me to try to eat better. I don't believe going to extreme like no oils at all is a good idea unless for example you are trying to get rid of type 2 diabetes or already diagnosed with heart disease. Lastly of course I enjoy eating animal products and from a basic nutrition standpoint it is easier than a well planned vegan diet although that is getting easier also with fortified meat substitutes which are currently too expensive and fortified milk substitutes which are actually becoming competitive in price in Australia at least compared to regular milk.
@VeganLinked
@VeganLinked 3 ай бұрын
Ethics: you have no problem with it, but the animals do and those who care about animals do. Factory farms: why would you care at all if you're eating them? If you care you wouldn't eat them. They're in factory farms because that's been the only sustainable way to implement this vile practice. And moving forward CAFO's aren't going to be sustainable either. The most sustainable is absolutely plant agriculture. Health: there is no need to consume animal's, their body parts, organs or secretions to be as healthy or even healthier than you already are. I say this because I imagine you have access to legumes, greens, grains, fruits, veggies, mushrooms, nuts, seeds, herbs & spices just like everyone else presumably does here. There's no need to consume fish. You can instead eat nuts and seeds for ALA. When you eat animals you're supporting the most violent, abusive, toxic industry that causes deforestation, desertification, aquatic dead zones, zoonotic diseases, etc. all because of an outdate, infantile really, habituated and mindless behavior feed by industry commercials and sustained by industry lobbyists not interested in anything more than business as usual. @@annoyedaussie3942
@annoyedaussie3942
@annoyedaussie3942 3 ай бұрын
@VeganLinked I appreciate your response even though it's not going to change my mind. As far as eating legumes well I have increased that, my point is it's still much easier to eat 100gm of meat (dry weight about 23gm) than dry weight 100gms of legumes. If absorption issues exist for legumes then the meat is slightly higher in nutrition for only about 1 third of the calories. Keeping some wiggle room in my diet is desired also. Maybe i want to use some of my calorie space drinking alcohol or cake or soft drinks. From a practical perspective why not go after the industries that make no sense, 99% of wealthy people in the world are omnivore so that's not changing in any meaningful way. You might be annoyed I eat kangaroo, however they will be killed whether I eat them or not, they are often killed and not eaten as they are obviously a crop and grazing land pest. Farmed salmon in Australia is fed sardines caught purely for the purpose of salmon food. There's 0 health argument not to eat sardines instead and there are environmental concerns over these fish farms. Telling people to eat sardines and not salmon would be far more effective than telling people to just not eat fish. The all or nothing approach by many vegans means you get nothing. Also any argument over b12 supplements should just tell people to eat oysters a non sentient being and farming which doesn't harm the environment. Best of luck in your efforts.
@VeganLinked
@VeganLinked 3 ай бұрын
@@annoyedaussie3942 there obviously is no absorption issue with legumes. These are perhaps the most healthy thing to eat on the planet. You can eat them sprouted or cooked. And while you think it's easier to just eat meat it's not easier for the animal obviously, it's worse on the environment and communities surrounding concentrated animal feeding operations, it creates the most violent jobs, and all for what? Because you think it's easier to cook a body part than beans? Thinking you can't get nutrients from whole plant foods as dumb as it gets. Obviously I would be sick or dead if that was the case. So would my lifelong vegan friends and long time vegan friends who have been decades longer than any carnivore out there.

If I say, elevate to a blood glucose of 9 after a meal from 5.5 pre meal, I will monitor it and if I fall back around 5 or 6 in two or three hours, all good. Hi Chris. Just wanted to give a thumbs up to your video. I had been dipping my toes into going more plant based for years, but I credit Dr. Greger's How Not To Die with providing the final tools I needed to propel me to the 95% whole foods plant based life I've been living for the past 5 1/2 years. While he sometimes gets a little too in the weeds, even for me as a dietitian and nutrition nerd, and can be a little extreme on some points, the work he has done is invaluable. To think about the number of lives he has improved is staggering. His grandmother would be so proud ❤️.

Love it 🫶 I would love to add some goodness to this topic that is often forgotten. Plant based diet helps us heal from all sorts of food addictions. And that is what manufacturers don’t want. They want us to consume more, be needy and miserable so we come back for more. They create products that make us addicted and sick. But when we are thriving on plants we feel more energised, more nourished and less deficient. Plants make us free spirits 💚

I love that you are an HONEST, HUMBLE and CARING person. We may not agree on all things diet or politics (good luck getting two people to agree on all that even with a spouse :) ) but any disagreement would be a delightful discourse of ideas, experiences and I believe mutual enrichment for the dialog. This is superb. Thank you Chris. I can't help but wonder why Simon Hill and Gil Carvalho haven't had an interview with Dr. Greger yet. This does confuse me a little bit, tbvh. I am wondering if its because both don't wholly subscribe to WFPB, maybe? I agree with Simon that eating some TVP is absolutely fine as it's not ultra processed, and Simon advocates some mock meats, too, as not all of them are bad. Some are pretty darn good with salt and fat content. Love both their channels. I love Dr. Greger the most, though. He gets flack for not perhaps looking like a gym bunny, but not everyone wants to. So, yeah I think he's the best. Plus, he is not afraid of nuts and seeds in appropriate quantities, which can be tailored for each individual s circumstances, unlike Chef AJ (a lovely lass granted) who is absolutely petrified of putting 1 oz of weight on.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but in researching this for my mom the ratio of potassium to sodium is what's most important as they ultimately balance each other. A loud and proud goal of youth ag programs is to create the next generation of “advocates for agriculture.” Given everything you do on this channel, I am sure you can imagine how this becomes problematic… Anyway, I am hoping to write a book about exactly this but am not sure where to start. Had no idea about the bot army of the beef industry, but it does make sense, since I see it in the comments. You’d think everyone is doing the carnivore diet by the comments, when in reality most people haven’t even heard about it. It’s an uphill battle against them, but we gotta forge ahead. I know first hand the benefits of a whole food plant based diet, it is the healthiest hands down. I won’t tire until everyone knows about it, they see it when they see me in person, starting with my family, when I go to the dentist and they take my blood pressure, at work. My husband and I are great ambassadors, and we even eat some of the processed stuff too, but just not eating animal products already does wonders to your health.
