So... this new 2019 6.7L 1-Ton diesel (with 1000# of torque) gets just about the same mileage as a 1500 Half-ton Ram with the old 5.9L gasoline engine and a 1/3 of the torque. Pretty impressive, really.

Apples to oranges. This is a diesel from the sounds of it it you are comparing it to a gas. A diesel 1/2 ton gets about 30 mpg, about twice as much as the Cummins.
@mic982
@mic982 5 жыл бұрын
I am, but that's the point. I still own my 2001 Dodge ½-ton 1500 with the 5.9L V-8 and it gets ~14 mpg. Has since new. This 1-ton with >2.5 times the torque does the same or better (mileage wise) while able to do a LOT more work. To me, that's remarkable. I also own a 2015 Ram Ecodiesel which gets 29+ mpg. But it has < half of the torque of this 1-ton.

Agreed. But, unfortunately, in my state the Legislature is going after diesels of all kinds, sans off-road and farm-only vehicles (tractors) to punish the owners of them. Oregon wants to essentially ban all over-the-road diesels in the name of Climate Change. What a pity if they get their way, and I don't see much in the way to stop them.

Another good video guys. I live about 40 miles from Green River where you checked the mpg on that beautiful Ram 3500. I wish my 2009 Dodge Ram 3500 dually diesel got that good. When not pulling my trailer, I average approximately 5 mpg and pulling my big trailer, it averages about 2 mpg. It takes me two tanks to make it to Las Vegas from Green River, when pulling my 38 foot trailer. Pulling my trailer up Spotted Wolf on I-70 , you can actually watch the fuel gauge move before reaching the top. The truck has 4:56 gears and I've had it at the dealer and at independent diesel shops literally hundreds of time complaining about the mpg, but every one tells me that it's normal.

Correct me if I'm wrong but only the 2500 comes with the standard output Cummins. Wouldn't be a fair comparison because while they're both in the Heavy Duty class, they're two different types of trucks, it's obvious the 3/4 ton will get better MPG results.

@@WeatherxCalipha 3500 also gets the standard output. The output is based on what transmission you use. 2500 can only use 68rfe(standard), but the 3500 can use the 68rfe and the AISIN(high output). Standard output would get higher MPG, because it uses a higher compression ratio, because it uses less boost.

I am on my 6th Ram diesel since 1996. Only going off the 6.7 though, they all seem to really jump up in MPG at about the 10k miles mark. They take some time to break in, then you really see an improvement. Of the last 3, after the 10k mile mark I would be between 19-21 mpg on them. I only see 15 when towing a heavy trailer. So the MPG tests on brand new diesels is a bit misleading on what you will eventually get. However, new, that is pretty close to what I was seeing as well.

I checked it on road first trip where I go approx. 120 miles with cruise set on 75 mph on I40, no bed cover. When truck had approximately 600 miles on it, that stretch of highway I averaged 16.4 mpg. I made the same trip yesterday, close to same outdoor air temp, truck now has 13,000 miles on it and it averaged 18.5 mpg. With the trip I made yesterday I have approximately 50 miles where I can set cruise on 58 mph once I get out of congested traffic. Yesterday it got 23.2 mpg, when it was new it was getting 21 mpg.

In fact, Cummins doesn't really have traditional engine break-in periods. Actual break-in is 300 miles, and that's simply to break-in the rear end of the truck before towing. The Ram Manual states, "A long break-in period is not required for the engine and drivetrain (transmission and axle) in your vehicle. Drive moderately during the first 300 miles (500 km). After the initial 60 miles (100 km), speeds up to 50 or 55 mph (80 or 90 km/h) are desirable." Well, they're well beyond the 300 mile break-in recommendation. As for mileage, I don't believe you got anywhere near 23.2 MPG on any HD truck, certainly not after regeneration and in real-world conditions. My truck's display will lie to me and say I'm getting 20+ MPG regularly, but it falls to around 17-18 MPG highway on a good day after it regenerates.

@@AkioWasRight - I have purchased a 1999 2500 new, then a 2005 3500 new and now a 2018 3500. Every one increased in fuel efficiency as I put miles on them. No matter what you believe, I just checked it yesterday after that trip. Those numbers were from the computer on the sections of highway with different speeds. But, full trip real numbers at the fuel pump. My trip consisted of 398 miles to and from, I have a lot of driving on interstate prior to getting in slow/stop & go traffic for several miles through Raleigh NC morning traffic then 55 speed limit of highway and slowing traffic through towns for remainder to destination. Then the same trip home with similar evening traffic. I stopped and topped off tank 7 miles from home on return trip and checked total trip mpg. Even with the traffic congestion to and from I still averaged 18.8 round trip with approximately 240 of the miles being around 75 mph and a lot of miles is stopped and slow traffic. That's pump numbers on a stock truck.

I doubt you could find a tougher one to test the truck. Some of the grades are 15 miles long and very steep, and they have a lot of runaway truck ramps. It's got to be the Ike gauntlet of mpg runs. I have the same truck from 2014. As far as stuff going wrong we have gone through 9 recalls, and now currently wondering why if the truck sits for a week the battery voltage drops from 12.4 down to 12, there must be some sort of parasitic draw. While moving stuff near the truck one day I noticed that the bed light came on and so did the tail lights like when you hit the remote to turn on the bed light. My neighbor came over and told my wife while we were gone that our truck headlights are on, when they went outside to look they were off. Luckily the lights are not staying on long but something in the computer is automatically turning these lights on and they probably stay on for about 1 to 2 minutes such as the feature when you're walking to your house door when parked at night. I do have a battery charger handy but another hassle with my brand new $70,000 truck, although it is 4 years old now with only 30,000 miles. Took the camper off and I am enjoying driving it without the camper for a while but I do love my arctic fox 990 camper .nice to have room to store everything you need and not have it blow out of the bed or get stolen. Getting 15 MPG just like these guys or 10 MPG loaded with the camper
