I just returned from a trip from Spokane WA to Hurley Wisconsin and back. We have a 2019 RAM 3500 Limited 8' long bed Crew Cab with the 68RFE transmission and the standard output Cummins. We did 4085 miles pulling an Outdoors RV 22FQS with a wet weight of about 8000 pounds. We carry 90 gallons of water and a lot of fishing and other gear in the truck. I drove about 62 MPH as much as possible and took mostly US and State highways (and some gravel Forest Roads) rather than the Interstate. We got 11.9 mpg overall and used almost exactly 9 gallons of DEF. When we travel in the western US we usually average 12.9 MPG with this setup, but in the midwest you tend to get a lot of biodiesel which drastically reduced our overall mileage. I have used Walmart Supertech DEF at 7.98 per 2.5 gallon jug. Its about the same price at DEF at the pump. We spent about 30 bucks for DEF in a very long and expensive trip. DEF cost is insignificant compared to the overall cost of the truck and diesel fuel. I like clean air and I am glad for the DEF technology which allows us to have cleaner diesels. For the record our mileage when not towing the trailer is usually about double that when we tow. 22-24 is common. The 5th generation Ram Cummins is truly an amazing machine. We love it.

2019 2500 with 18k miles I get right around 22mpg at 75 mph unloaded and 11 or so towing a 26ft travel trailer with dirtbikes in the bed, same speeds. DEF consumption runs at 50:1 to diesel. I like your reviews and tips, thanks!

Good assessment. FYI: 2018 Ram 3500 SWR 4x4 Quad Laramie. 14000 miles, hand calc every tank, history reflects: Ave is just shy of 15 city 17 highway (empty/no tow) and apprx 4000 per tank of DEF. The best so far was 17.9 MPG on a full highway trip. I'm in Southern CA so sea level. Pretty much spot on to what you reflect. Computer tends to be off hand cal by about 1.5 miles

Once you pay for the extra price for the Diesel engine, the ROI is very positive. I think the sweet spot is the lower output in the 2500 as the higher output in the 3500 provides a lesser MPG although the extra torque might play an important role for somebody who needs to performing heavier towing ! Like these videos quite a lot as they are very realistic and down to earth ! Keep grinding, cheers 🍻

I drive that I-95 from VA to FL 2 times a month 1474 miles roundtrip. Thats why I got that 60 gallon aux tank for my truck. Once I hit about 30k miles my mpg started going up. Not towing I get about 18.5 in my 6.7 dually. I set cruise at 75. In summer it goes down. But it sure is nice going down and up without stopping for fuel..LOL.Truckstop DEF is the way to go. I also fill up. I have a commercial fuel card, so it makes it easy. BTW..not towing I get 8k-9k on a tank of DEF. I think my Ford is 7 gallons. Keep up the videos!!!

It’s so hard for me to say I get x number of MPG because I’m always changing from hauling the family around to towing a couple different trailers to light farm work, hauling firewood pulling trees etc. I will say the one thing that affects MPG the most out of anything I have done is increase tire size and tread aggressiveness. 35x12.5 F rated tire immediately took away over 2 mpg everywhere. Anyways nice thorough video bro!

It now has over 1,000,000 miles on it just 3 1/2 weeks ago I hit that mile stone. I get hauling (depends on trailer & wind mostly) 10-13 MPG loaded driving 62-65 MPH Empty I very rarely drive more than 65 MPH & get around 19. It has a lot of weight due to the equipment I have with it. Weighs empty 10,600 lbs (Extra 100 gallon auxillary tank)

The difference between the computer and the pump could be the way you pump fuel. Some use the 30 second delay method, you pump until it clicks off, then you time 30 seconds to let the air bubbles go down, then you pull the trigger fully until it clicks off again. There are many variables in diesel fuel that changes the amount of air bubbles it has, which changes how much fuel you can get in the tank.

That's why I always pump slow. Depending on.how fast the pump is going I might pump 4 or 5 times letting it rest for a min or 2 befor pumping again. And never let it get below half of a tank you will lose fuel mpg wants it get blow half. I alway used to think better at half , less weight but a old timer told.me.to.try that and it.works try it.

I own a 2018 ram SRW 6.7 with a 3:42 rearend and have a 2022 HO silver night edition dually on order. I have driven the HO with 4:10 gears. The HO is slow off the line compared to the standard. its like a rubber band. You can feel it preload and then kick in when you need the torque for towing. The 68RFE is a ready to go as soon as you stomp on it. The problem is the 68RFE is only good up to about 150k if you are towing above 10-15k. I get about 21 on the interstate as long as i stay under 69. speed is a big killer of MPG on these things. I get 12 all day long at 65-68 pulling a 13k 5th wheel. If i were only towing a yard trailer or lawn mowers, id stay with the standard cummins and the 68RFE; I dont trust it long term with the 5th wheel. Another great video JB, I am waiting for your video on likes/dislikes. There is not a truck out there that is all good/bad. I have a 2008 Ridgeline with over 190k only needed a window regulator, I use it at least 2 times a day to get in and out of my work, and an accelerator pedal sensor. I cannot complain about that, dead reliable. Lots of innovations on the Ridgeline, like 2 glove boxes like most trucks have now, multi function tailgate, like Ram and GM do now, of course all different in their own way, and a trunk. My dislike is that the torque is all made high in the RPM range, after all, it is an Accord engine. And my fuel mileage is around 18.1 right now over the life but I only get about 17ish now. Probably needs plugs and coil packs. I guess what I am saying is that nothing is perfect.

Glad to see that the RAM HO is getting good mpg. If RAM would update to a 10 speed like Ford and Chevy, they would be killing it in the towing and MPG categories. My Titan XD with the Cummins doesn't use DEF during my daily commute. The truck is just now 1 year old and at 20k miles. I have gone 3 months on my daily commute and never seen the DEF gauge move. Got on the interstate pulling a 10k lb travel trailer after that, and it was giving me a 30% warning in less than 200 miles. My DEF tank is 2.5 gallons, so I had used 1.75 gallon in 200 miles. My fuel economy during that run was down around 6 mpg. Normally, it is 10-14 with the RV in tow depending on terrain and speed. Which is the real concern. I don't mind DEF. The cost is not prohibitive, but the drop in fuel economy during regen is horrible. I don't see how it is more environmentally friendly considering this. The only reason I still have the DEF in tact is warranty, but the more I tow, it seems that it would be substantially more cost effective to D&T.

I did a trip on my 3500 dodge 2014 all the way from Illinois to hillsboro OR next to Portland Oregon. It was a 2300 mile trip , I did not.drive over 65 all the way home and did the speed limits were needed for law. I have a truck bed top flat that covers the bed. I pulled into my drive at 26 miles per gallon on the average over all with the miles totally 2300 miles. I took my gas recipes and it was really close , I did it and wirh the price of fuel and I never let it get below half a tank. I see that if you let it get below half a tank it.does worse on fuel mileage? , why I don't know friend told me to try it. So I need up getting better fuel mileage at the I stopped 5 times maybe 6 on the way home for fuel. At my last stop I was getting 756 miles on a full tank. That comes with a 31 gallon tank. Now if you take that and divided the 756 mile its 24.38 miles per gallon. 26 miles so the computer may be off I don't know. But by the record of gas that I bought I was almost there at 25 .7 miles per gallon. So I am going to get rid of the Def fuel and see what I get on a long haul again. I am not a hot shot driver so I had no trailer. On my first trip it said I was getting around 23 miles per gallon but when adding up the fuel record it was showing almost 21 but I did take a different route on the way home. I went up towards idiaho Nebraska and Arkansas which had alot more hills. I also used more Def fuel on those hills and on the way home I only used half a tank of Def because I had used less brake exhaust on the way back. I took a rout through Wyoming , over to Denver Colorado and through Kansas. I had filled up.my Def befor I left Illinois and when I hit Arkansas I had half tank , so I filled up again. But Google said the first route was the best fuel mileage rout to take and I don't thi k I will ever take googles advice on which is the best gas routes ever again lmao. I thought I would.get better gas mileage going that way the first time but I took googles word for it and it was wrong. No when I got home with the trip back I still have half of a tank of fuel. So like I said 25.7 is pretty close. I bought my truck with 69,995 miles it now has a little over 78,000 miles. Yes I did 65 on 80 mile.hour high ways. But with these gas prices at almost 6 dollars a gallon what's better spending more or saving more. I used to drive like that 80 to 85.miles on the high way but I have come to realize it does you know good. For instance a guy in the same truck past me ten time , I know this because I wS keepi g an eye out for how many time they had stopped compared to me. The first few times. So anything over 65 miles mph in those trucks you will.not get those miles per gallon. So I drove like a truck driver told me to do and made more head way driving 65 miles mph and saved more money and only lost 2 hours of why Google told.me that I would arrive home. I stop and stretched got some food got some drinks but other than that I just kept on the truck.. so is it really worth driving 80 miles an hour even in a gasoline vehicle losing all those miles per gallon that you could, and losing money. Because you know every time that you're driving 80 miles an hour and a 70 mph speed zone you are losing your ass on gas and money. And nine times out of 10 everyone that stops is going to be there for at least 20 minutes and they're going to be buying more drinks or something to eat spending even more money. Ps now at 25.7 . Mpg thats 31 gal tank it would out me at 796 miles on a full tank. I did clime after leaving the gas station when I said I had 756 miles on a full tank. But I got er back on the highway hit 65 cruise control and went up in miles to 768. So 796 - 768 . That's 28 miles off. Not to bad for a 1 ton pickup truck Bex loaded down with all my clothes from work. Probably had the weight of about 4 people total in the tru k with only me driving. Dam good running trucks. And that exhaust brake was a lifesaver because trying to break a one-time truck to complete emergency stop downhill to Arkansas or in the mountains would have been hard without it

Might consider the rear gear ratio when comparing the fuel mileage. I believe the 2018 2500 would have a 3.42 and the 19’ Aisin would have either 3.73 or 4.10. 3.42 much better for unloaded highway MPG

JB Reviews the inside leak is saying there going to replace the the aisin with either a ZF 8speed “the same new trani behind the 6.4, but maybe heavier duty” or an Allison. Possibly the new 9speed Allison they developed away from GM now that GM no longer has an exclusive contract with them for consumer trucks. I honestly would much prefer the Allison, as would almost everyone. They would steal the market putting an Allison behind the Cummins!!! but I think they might go ZF. They already have them in the 1500 and now the HD platform with the 6.4 now, So they might stay with them. But who knows 🤷‍♂️ I think they would do good to get both. The ZF 8speed to replace the 68rfe for the standard Cummins, and the Allison 9speed for the HO and or 3500 models. ram would really be dropping the ball to not get the Allison at least. But ZF is a well known and established company as well so the ball can roll any direction

Geez, the more I watch these videos, the more I wonder if I really want to upgrade my 15 Ram 2500 with the 6.4 Hemi to a 19/20 Ram 2500 6.7 Cummins! I only tow about 10,000 lbs with my existing truck and only have 28,000 miles in 5 yrs. The only real reason I thought the diesel would be good is for the fuel mileage but under the same circumstances as your trip I’d probably get 14-15 mpg on regular gas. Towing is where my Hemi sucks, when it gets about 7 mpg dragging my toy hauler around. I suspect the Cummins would get 10-11 mpg towing the same trailer, but is it worth the big price I’d pay for the Cummins? I can buy a lot of gasoline for the $10k the Cummins demands, not to mention th e $81k for the new 2500 Limited! And the Hemi doesn’t need any DEF! Where’s all the people talking about the 28 mpg with their diesels?

I have a 2019 3500 HO and I'll tell you don't worry about it the diesel. I came from a 17' Silverado with a 6.0 gas. I was able to tow over 11,000 through the mountains of WVA and maintain speed on the interstates. If you don't need it, don't buy a diesel
@JB_WhoWork
@JB_WhoWork 4 жыл бұрын
Mostly deleted trucks get that fuel mileage and trucks with over 50k miles. Diesel has the benefit of a exhaust brake and resale value. But it really comes down to preference because I don’t necessarily need a diesel but I prefer it.
@razorsedgeadventures6599
@razorsedgeadventures6599 4 жыл бұрын
JB Reviews you sound like me... where it’s a very thin line between want and need!! I know the diesel will last probably 3 times as long the gas engine will, but then it took me 5 years to put 28,000 on my current truck, so that argument doesn’t hold much water for me, and when you pay an extra $11000 for the diesel, you sure hope it will have a higher resale value! I’ll probably bite the bullet and go for the Cummins, including the HO version with the Aisen transmission because I never know when I may need to tow a house up the Eisenhower Grade!!

cbchevy74 since I wrote my comment, I bought a loaded 19 Limited 6.7 HO with the Aisin, and shortly thereafter I upgraded my 26’ bumper tow toy hauler to a 41’ 15,000 lb 5th wheel toy hauler and have towed it all over the Pacific Northwest. I absolutely love this truck! Not only does it tow that monster of a trailer with ease and total control, but it does it in near silence and luxury car levels of comfort. The HO Cummins is just a powerhouse and the exhaust brake is awesome! The Aisin trans isn’t the most refined trans on the market and can give a rough shift once in a while, but it has never varied more than a couple degrees in temp while tugging that big trailer up long steep grades in high temps. The street in front of my house has an incline of probably 2 degrees and I can hook up the 5th wheel, put the Ram in gear and let off the brake and the Cummins will start tugging that trailer up the hill at idle without even touching the accelerator. Love this truck!
