That smile is FREEDOM. She is a beautiful lady as well, don't get me wrong, but they both have freedom all over their faces. We have been working a debt snowball....it is grueling....but almost finished (other than the house), and wow.....what a feeling. This was such an exciting video. We too want to move to the country.....we want to travel more.....but we would have failed miserably with all the debt. So will start with a fresh slate and new way to live going forward. Really opens your eyes to things we tend to ignore in this rate race of a world. Amazing how this world feeds us debt. It is not easy....but it is achievable. Congrats you two and thanks for sharing your story.

Go listen to Dave Ramsey, read his book Total Money Makeover. I wish I would have found him at 18 instead of 32. Look up his "7 Baby Steps" and follow those. If you start now, you'll make everything much easier on yourself, than waiting until youre 30+ and wishing you would have started at 18.

word of advice. Do not take out any student loan at all. Do not get into debt. Start a vanguard account and open your roth IRA account to buy target date mutual funds. If you follow these simple instructions you will be a multi millionaire when you retire. That's only investing 5 or 6k a year. Easily doable when you get a decent job. The Roth IRA account is a retirement account you wont pay taxes on when its time to sell. Learn the power of compound interest. Its VERY important you start early. With a 10 percent annual return you will double your money every 7 years. This doesn't take into effect the money you are adding to it every year. If you start next year investing the 6k you will have almost 5 million dollars if you retire at 65. Do yourself a favor and research Roth IRA's. Also stay clear of the temptation to buy things you cant afford. Your friends will buy trucks and houses they cant afford with no clear goals for retirement. If you prefer to have the nice things now but have no hope of retirement be my guest but I don't think that's a way to really live your life. Im 33 and feel incredibly lucky that im debt free and already have a clear idea of how Im going to retire.

We've been on the Dave Ramsey train of thought for a long time and it has literally saved us many times. We are literally dept free except for the house. My wife is the saver too and she does amazing work with our finances, especially with me not being able to work anymore because I have terminal cancer. I am 100% disabled through the VA and they're finally paying for the medical bills, but that took a couple years to get set up, but because of how good she is with money we literally had no hospital bills. It's hard work, but it definitely takes a team, you definitely can't have one person who is just spending non stop. Cheers & prayers to you and your family Cody

Im stoked for you guys! I struggled with getting my feet down with finances a little bit when i first moved away from home. Got married and divorced real young which really set me back. About 3 years ago I strapped myself down to the saving train and have been really busting my ass. I've since done two trips to Afghanistan which helped a ton and now I'm about to be 24 and by my birthday I should have about 125k saved. with no debt besides a mortgage but it is a cashflow property at the moment and has room for me to improve it and raise the value of it quite a bit once i move back in. I plan to sell it in the next 2 years. My goal is to hit a quarter mil net worth by the time I'm 25.

YAY great work! My wife and I flipped our house in CA 5 years ago and used the small profit to get a much larger, nicer house with land in CASH in rural Arkansas. It was difficult to sacrifice leaving all our friends and family, our jobs, plus the endless amenities of city living, but totally 100% worth it. Now we're preparing to flip this house and build a fully off-grid homestead. It's been a long, slow, arduous process, but we've had the homestead dream in our sights for over 15 years, and now we're almost there. To anyone dreaming of a life rich in freedom, abundance, and self-reliance: you can do it! Set your goals, map the process, and take it one step at a time! Stay positive and never give up!

Cody, we use an app called "Good Budget" on our phones. It allows us to know exactly what is in each envelope that we have made up and where it's being spent. Each person just has to put in their receipts and it automatically syncs to both phones. It's a really good app and I highly recommend it. Cheers

One thing I learned in my younger years about saving money was to try and look for your financial fun limit. I mean to say while overall trying to stop super expensive hobbies, actively look to see how few hobbies that require resources you need to fill your time. Personally I learnt I could do with a belly boat instead of an actual boat, and a dirtbike instead of a quad and 1-2 other things. But once I had just a few of my favourite pass times reasonably taken care of and started trying to save, the value of the money was always higher then the things I wanted to buy with it. Then saving became habit and easy. And the value of everything changed to me in a healthy way.

Needs, wants and desires. Take care of needs first. Once they're fulfilled, then you save for wants and the process continues. It's important to know that some desires will never be fulfilled. The problem is that too many people have this process reversed.

Great video, and awesome advice! I was taught to be a "saver", so I have been lucky enough to never be in large scale debt. My parents were products of the depression, and they passed all the lessons they learned to me, so I was quite fortunate to have been born to them. I know many people with the chains of debt across they shoulders, and stories like yours are a great testimony to the fact that mere humans can pull themselves up and out of that torture. (and be so happy when they do) Thanks for the video! BTW: One of my "secrets" when I was young and trying to save was to think about a purchase in terms of how many hours of work I needed to do to pay for it. This would help me center my mind on how important and necessary it was. I aso made a rule for myself where I set a limit where if I was going to make a purchase above a certain amount, I HAD to step back and delay that purchase for a day or two to really think about it. That helped a lot with spontaneous buys. I also only carried so much cash in my pocket so I could never spent a lot without thinking. Over the years asmy savings and income grew all those limits I described would just naturally slide up, but I always kept them in line with my income....never my savings. Everyone has their approach to it....that was a part of mine. I think everyone needs a plan and to track their progress against that plan.

Congratulations you guys. Been following you for years and had the opportunity to meet you and buy your book years ago in Topeka. I've used clips of you other debt KZfaq vids on my financial peace university classes. We found Dave in the early 2000's and paid off the house in 2012. We still have a budget and use our own version of Dave's envelope system. Because of Dave, we were well positioned for the current worldwide pandemic. We actually have reworked our budget and trimmed $1000.00 a month from our expenses because of work at home and travel restrictions while Increasing our food budget to cover the inflation of shortages. It's all about paying attention and being a responsible adult. Welcome to the debt free club. You'll still have a house payment tho. We have to put away $470.00 a month to cover Insurance and taxes; not to mention repair and maintenance sinking funds. It's all just part of life, but you already know that. You're doing great. Thanks for sharing and for encouraging others to follow your example.

So happy for you two! I've been working the baby steps for about a year now, and am now in step 3b. A homestead like yours is my ultimate goal and hope someday mine will be as beautiful and filled with love as yours!

I was the saver. Even after years of me trying, to be as compromising and kind as possible, he refused to go along with the plan. Would not read about how to make things better. That, his spending and he not living an honest life led to me leaving. I still have hope of a good relationship seeing people like you.

That's why my family moved more into the country when after I was born cause the big city style town well it's dangerous even today people know that there's a very fine line of the good part and bad part of that town so basically now having spent 20 years growing up in the country i loved it a lot more besides how you suppose to run through the woods with sticks with no woods 😂

First off, congratulations on such an amazing Accomplishment!! Second, your family is mine and my husbands favorite channel to watch on KZfaq. Mrs W., the way you look at Cody, you can tell the amount of Love and adoration you have for him. You both have such an amazing relationship and it shows. You are raising some incredible kids (sweetloaf is so adorable and we LOVE seeing her!) and share some great info with your followers. Keep up the great work and may God continue to Bless all of you! Blessings and Love ❤️

START WHEN YOU’RE YOUNG! You’ve heard it a thousand times, and just don’t want to hear it again from some “old codgers”. Please, listen to the wisdom of 30, 40 and 50 year olds and up..start saving at your first paycheck. You will have debt; be it student loans, Mortage, a car payment or unforeseen circumstance..you will make financial mistakes. Don’t let those mistakes go unheeded. Don’t make those same mistakes again. If you start saving at an early age, the debt you take on can be much much less(if any) and be manageable....even saying that, the goal is to be DEBT FREE...as much as possible, as early as possible. If you do acquire debt, make sure the debt works for you, not you for the debt. We know, we were all there once. You want to go out, you want to have fun and have a nice car. But the more work you put into it at 20, is less work that you’ll have to put in it at 30. The more work you put in at 30, the less work you’ll have to put in at 50. Ever said to yourself “ I wish I would have known then what I know now”? Well, you do know. I’m you, 20 years into the future. And I’m telling you...save, save, save, save.

Been really weird for the past 3 months. My wife is chronically ill and has a very poor immune system and breathing issues, so we took a decision early to self-isolate for the foreseeable future with COVID-19. We have a family friend who is a carer for one of our adult 'kids' who is on a disability pension, and he has bee kind enough to do all of our shopping and errands. What is really, really strange is pulling my wallet out of the drawer, dusting it off, and opening it to find the same $25 in notes that was in there 3 months ago! I am fortunate in that my employer actually told everyone who could to work from home, and my job allows for that. It's incredible the money we have saved without the costs of me going to the office - no fuel, no cafes for lunch, etc, etc.

I am 20 years old and going to college, not having much money but even in a restaurant someone have to convince me that I can take what I want and it may gonna cost more. I think it’s great that you both agreed on things and still got to buy fun stuff! I am watching your videos and dreaming about a own homestead one day. Great advice with the poster.
