This is the conclusion I came to. We can use the commercialised oils, we can use silicones. Ingredients don't have need to be 100% raw or pure to be of quality. The thing is NOT WASHING the hair in the same proportion we used those hydrophobic ingredients. The problem was that we used them raw oils and butters, we used them basically all the time, and we didn't wash them properly. The oil/butter (like all the other products) serve a purpose, once they've done what they're supposed to, we need to wash them out properly. From what I've seen from the videos of people having bad experiences with using the detox method consistently is that their hair only attracted moisture (bc of the humectant-rich oils) but the strands weren't properly LUBRICATED, as water does not lubricate to the extent than an oil does. The hair detox method was important as it taught as the importance of WASHING OUR HAIR PROPERLY and not completely relying on oils to do miracles on our hair. What it fell short was on the fact that it didn't properly address the post-washing matters of black hair. On the point of the cuts, it's so obvious that the curly cuts were supposed to be a fail. Our hair curls differently in different parts of our hair, it curls different depending on the day, so setting a shape based on a changing nature, is setting up for failure. WHAT AN AMAZING JENN! You're out here doing the Lord's work. Informative black hair care videos is what we need.

And a gel is a gel is a gel. No matter how many humectants they have in their composition. I honestly feel like that's why a lot of naturals are becoming straight naturals or going back (or for the first time) to relaxers... natural hair just seems like the most confusing, complicated and restricted thing in the world man... and it does not need to be

You absolutely hit the nail on the head. Totally agree. My hair has absolutely thrived since applying the "detox" method to shampooing. But after wash day? It's been hell!!! My hair is so dry. My old post-washday techniques kept my hair mosturised in-between those wash days and I need to stick to that. Both are needed.

@@breantonia.6625 I've been natural nearly 15 years. 5 things had the most impact on my journey. The curly girl handbook. Aveda Salons. The science of black hair book. The naturally curly website and My trichologists. The curly girl handbook taught me about moisture. The Trichologists taught me how to achieve maximum moisture in my hair WITHOUT damaging my hair or my scalp. Weah no wet hair or wet buns or overnight deep conditioner.

We grew up washing our hair weekly and rinsing with either vinegar mix or Listerine mix. Our hair grew and was healthy even though our mother used heavy greases, braided our hair, and heat processed/dried them on the weekends. The problem was we went from keeping a simple braided style through the week to wanting to have our hair out in twist-outs and other styles that took a regular infusion of products. Then we were so tired of dealing with our hair that we didn't wash it properly on the weekends. We need to do 1 clarify, 1 moisture shampoo with a scalp scrub. Then a repairing and 1 hydrating smoothing conditioner with a protecting/hydrating/repairing leave in. 1 a month do a gloss. 1 a month do a bond repair. The other 2 weeks depend on your porosity or health concerns. Like protein or moisture treatments. Then dry our scalp, so there is no bacteria growth, and put extra protection on our ends, and serum for our scalp and 1 for our hair. Use only silk bonnets/ headbands/ scrunchies, and limit the heat to only 1 a week at most.

Since scissors / hair cutting tools were invented. afrikanHairGod follows a SIMPLE OG method that has worked for centuries. I grew up in the 60s and 70s. Regimen was simple: cleanse, condition, detangle, style (using a leave in and hair grease) and protective styling. We had our hair trimmed at least every six months based on the moon phases and astrological sign based on the sun. Keep your scalp clean! Hydrate and condition your hair. Yes. Even in protective styles! I live in the desert and my hair will not thrive without water, leave ins and hair grease. My hair grows past my hips. Every 4 years I do a big chop and start over. People often can’t believe the hair my hair is my own. Right now . . . I’m on another hair journey with my granddaughter. I’ve gone from less than a half inch to past my ear in one year (when I stretch the curls in its natural state without any heat). Over the past year, I’ve snipped off at least an inch.

I definitely agree with what she said, in this video. I knew it had more to do with the no butters no oil method. Then the curly cuts. I’ve been getting curly cuts for years and my hair grew from a mini Afro to shoulder length. When I heard that curly cuts was damaging people’s hair I got scared and stopped getting curly cuts. However my stylist blew out my hair and it’s really healthy so I knew curly cuts alone wasn’t causing damage. Unlike a lot of naturals I could not hop onto the no butters no oil train I’m a believer that if it’s not broke, don’t fix it. And my hair has been flourishing using oils and butters and deep conditioning my hair everyweek. I do however, for the most part use sulfate free shampoos. And clarify once a month or whenever my hair feels gunky. That seems to work for me

I'm proud of you and definitely agree 100% people must not be too quick to jump onto no oil no butter. I deep condition my hair and use oils now and there has been a big improvement of my hair now. Looks better and feels better. A person just needs knowledge on what oils they can put directly on the hair gto allow the oil to penetrate the strands. Oils for sure have a healthy purpose and is part of God's creation so people shouldn't forsake oils just because people say so 🥰🌟

Curly cuts aren't the problem in their own, the thing is that with our hair in natural state is hard to see some damages on the hair strands so if you're not seeing you don't fix it, and damage becomes worse and worse.

I agree with her, washing -> condition - > gel did just not make sense to me especially as our scalp produces sebum and our hair strands have fatty components, didn't't make a lick of sense eliminating oil/butters and I also noticed not adding a leavin made it difficult for my hair strands to slide between each other which led to some breakage on my ends. I quickly changed back to wash -> deep condition-> oil based leaving - > tiny grease on the ends ->gel , the only time I skip the leave-in is when I use an oil based curling creams. Hair has been flourishing since. I also do a coconut oil pre- poo. anything to maintain the integrity of my hair, I love to use.

I just had a GREAT conversation with a chemist this past weekend about this topic. She basically confirmed most things in this video. Raw oils and butters don't provide us as many benefits but broken down into a product it is great. Our hair needs that lubrication and needs to seal in moisture. Another misconception that group put forward is that oil doesn't seal in water. Oil does slow down the progression of water loss. In school, we were encouraged to purchase and use a dictionary to understand products and their function.

It’s great that you figured out above balance. I think what our hair needs is different from our scalps at least for a lot of us. Our hair can handle a lot more oils (formulated or not) than our scalp. But yeah, raw isn’t necessary but still needed in products.

She hit the nail on the head with the shampoo bit. I think the shampoos BGC markets as “all purpose” might actually be more clarifying. Even the AG Hair shampoo seems pretty strong and that’s what I’ve been using for a couple years, and while I don’t have damage, I have noticed my hair is perpetually ashy. I recently switched to a less stripping shampoo and I’m hoping that’ll help.

The 'all purpose' shampoos were clarifying on my hair too and made my hair lose it's luster and become ashy and the moisturizing shampoos didn't help. I had to re-introduce butter/oil-based deep treatments to save some of my roots which helped for parts of my hair that have a looser coil to be manageable but I still had to bc. Hopefully your hair will be okay.

Everything about the no oils/butters/BGC mantra is flawed, and they insist on teaching coily hair types to accept the messed up state of their hair to be normal and to stop chasing perfection. I respect the value that black stylists bring to style textured hair but I don't trust stylists to be the authoritative voice for the health of textured hair anymore. With the BGC method, when I blew out my hair it looked healthy, when I used styling products my hair looked healthy, but my hair in it's natural state had several splits/tumbleweed ends/loss of my natural luster - it was an absolute mess and I would have had to rely on K18/Olaplex, have trims every 6-8 weeks just to have viable hair and it was impossible to retain length. I have since returned to the old methods from the natural hair movement such as the LOC method, pre-poos, oils/butters and have made accommodations for my low-porosity/fine hair, my hair is thriving.

They want us to stop chasing perfection but yet, chase the perfect define curls 😅. I am sorry you had to go through that. It’s interesting though that your hair looks fine blown out because that’s how many was faced with their damaged 🤔
@Jade-rf8ov
@Jade-rf8ov 6 ай бұрын
@@JennJackson Haha! - And maybe the effects of silicones etc in heat stylers are less potent if your hair is medium/high porosity hence why some people can easily see the damage in blow-outs in comparison to others? My hair is very low in porosity so it soaks up all of the effects of silicones/polyquats that are in thermal protecting stylers/protectants/etc and it would temporarily mask the split ends/damage and make my hair look shiny and healthy. Once I reverted/clarified my hair from those products, my hair went back to tumbleweed. Majority of my BC had to happen with my hair in it's coily state and then a blow-out to correct the shape and catch any missed noticeable splits that were in porous parts of my hair. Thankfully I have been natural in the past to know that the tumbleweed was not my surface texture and should not be my base-line, if I hadn't been natural in the past maybe I would have been in a chokehold by BGC too to shrug it off.

UFD and I create hold gels have safe ingredients. However gels and mousse are drying so using them on freshly washed hair weekly without any leave in can’t be good for some tight curls. Not everyone has titanium or unicorn type of hair so there is that. I’d like to push back on “stylists don’t want to destroy people hair “ comment. We’ve witnessed several videos telling us otherwise. Some of them are definitely on a mission to keep your hair as short as possible. Sorry but at the price they charge the technique and method should be solid and impeccable. Trials and errors that big are for the KZfaq university not the professionals.

After listening to BGC for a while, I have drawn the conclusion that their method is really about how to get the most longevity and definition for wash n’ go styling and twist outs. If you listen the the stylist following that method exactly , they don’t want to use leave in conditioners because the style won’t get the most hold. When Aleise stated the no oils and butters were only for 30 day detox then you can use if want, that’s not what her former partner is saying. She is posting reels making fun of us for thinking we need to use them, along with some other stylist under them. Their method is not really catered to the overall health of hair, more so, curly styling. As for curly cuts, I think it depends on cutting skills of the individual stylists. They are really for shape, but a stylist with great cutting knowledge and skills will know how to cut what really needs to go. I never followed fhe BGC method in the 4 years I’ve been getting curly cuts. It didn’t make sense to me for my natural hair that I solely took care of for nearly 20 years before going to the stylists for cuts/trims. My hair was healthy doing what I did. My hair assessment on my first visit was that my hair was hydrated. I just use styling products they use because they really are good at suggesting those and how and when to use them. For some, their methods work out, but they definitely are not a one size fits all.

Overall, I’m glad more light is being shed on curly cuts and the health of them without tearing down of others.

Thanks for this video and all the research you’ve done on this method! I knew I didn’t trust a complete elimination of oils from the very beginning of this trend. The people who are known for the very healthiest hair in the world (Indians) use oils! Additionally, when our African ancestors were stolen from their land, they were stripped of all those butters and oils that kept their hair thriving. This continued well into the 1900s, when the “hairdress” finally became mainstream. The key to the hairdress wasn’t that it made hair grow - it allowed the hair you did grow to stay on your head! So, yes… I do think the more frequent washing is important, but we can’t just walk out the door after that with a mousse.

I never believed in the no oils/butters thing, but I was willing to try it for 60 days. I tried it and I had so much breakage that I had to do another big chop. I went back to my old method and started clarifying my hair weekly, my hair has been growing like a weed! I only added steaming my deep conditioner instead of using heat. I kept my other methods the same and it's been working great for me. I think we all should get with a good cosmetologist and get an analysis of what your hair needs and go from there. I was doing everything she recommended already except steaming. Once I did that, it kept me from having excessive splits, shedding and breaking. I just cut my hair last week because it was too much for me to handle.

Hi, what’s the difference between steaming and using a heat cap? Are the benefits not the same?
@Nille0212
@Nille0212 5 ай бұрын
@@mckenzieeleah no, they’re not the same. Using an actual steamer imparts more moisture into your hair than just heating the conditioner. You get the benefits of the extra moisture from steam and opening the cuticles so it’s absorbed better when you use a steamer over a steam cap.

Thanks so much for this update Jenn - would love if you could do an interview with her and have us post questions on a community tab! So glad we finally got an answer to what was going on and honestly it makes so much sense in hindsight. Been watching green beauty for years so glad to see she got her flowers for all the detailed research and evidence she brings. She's always my first stop for hair science knowledge. Honestly on my way to get the book and check my products, partially because I'm so curious which brands are on her list, partially because I want to guess which ones she had to remove due to bad ingredients (because that tea is sure to be PIPING hot). I wish she had provided a list of the brands she checked because some smaller ones (e.g. greenbeauty, Camillerose) aren't as famous so its hard to gauge if she would have known them to check or not, especially since they mostly advertise on youtube and other social media platforms. Also its me being v untrusting but I also want to see if she has any connection with any of the brands she suggests.

Im not sure we need to specifically deep condition frequently unless protein is explicitly needed but definitely agree that we need that lubrication from oil consistently. Hell everyone's hair produces an oil like substance naturally with the goal of protecting the hair. That shows that oil is necessary! More so for a texture that is dry and has a lot of potential breaking points or kinks. You just shouldnt let it build up too much.

I can read the ingredient labels fairly well after being nearly 15 years natural. That's why I was horrified when Shelly said that she was using a clarifying shampoo every week and sometimes twice a week. My hair loves Behentrimonimum Methosulfate, aloe vera juice, keratin and shea butter. Glycerin is hit or miss. Sulfates: hit or miss. Silicone hit or miss. Oh and people need to read the instructions on the brand website or on the label of the product because people purchase products off of one word on the front like "rosemary" and automatically assume that the product will be amazing. Nope. No thank you and not me. Yes, I believe that you should do an ingredients breakdown of the recommended black girls curls products. I'm not against all ingredients but you have to know how each ingredient could potentially react with your hair, skin and internal sensitivities. I'll give an example: Innersense Hydrating Cream hair bath: First 10 ingredients: Water Aqua -EAU, Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Glycerin, Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate. Looks ok no sulfates, no silicones, no oils no butters. Has Glycerin which we know is a humectant. But where is the detangling agent if you like to detangle in the shower or have very tangled hair as a lot of people with type 3 and 4 have. Also Sodium chloride aka salt is a known dehydrator. That's why we use salt to preserve things by removing moisture. So sodium chloride can affect the color of your hair and dehydrate the strands but it is in a so-called hydrating shampoo in the first 10 ingredients..... Read those labels people.

@@JennJackson Aye Caramba. I know I have super dry hair so I would not be washing my hair with Apple Cider Vinegar shampoo twice a week. It's not even the brand's fault because the brand recommend different shampoos for coily and dry hair on their website. Nice video ladies. It may seen off topic but just read me out. I was using the oils or butters my whole life with once a week wash n con. Recently, My hair fall had increased so much I cried. Eventually, I put 2n2 together. Researched hard water issues in US. Got my confirmation. I suffered from hard water hair and scalp. I live in a dry climate. That plays a roll as well with product. I thought I was vitamin deficient too. I wasnt according to my MD. I changed my shower head to filtered. Drink more water w/ a shot of lime juice every now n then for the natural minerals. Switched to avocado oil a few drops only on hand then hair shaft not scalp as needed. My hair and scalp has changed dramatically to soft non itchy .Way less hair fall. I let my scalp do its natural function. Im a black lady with 3b-c as they say. It works for me. Just trying to help us think in a different lane. Thanks for reading. Bye now

You're right. I rarely need to clarify my hair. I don't use raw oils/butters or silicones. I wash my hair every 3 - 5 days. Mostly I only include an all purpose shampoo every other wash since I cleanse so often, I really don't need it. I use hydrating shampoo only every other wash. If I only go 3 days I might use a co- wash since my hair isn't really "dirty" but I like to refresh it and my hair feels amazing when it's saturated in water often. I use a leave in with my wash and go now. I didn't use to and I didn't get damage from not using it, but my style looks more defined when I use my leave in and the stylers apply more smoothly. I also do deep condition. I use a protein conditioner about once a month and a hydrating hair mask at least once a month. I only do wash n go's so my hair isn't exposed to much that would damage it. I can say that wash n go's and no oils/ butters in itself does not damage the hair... If I had damage I would ask myself what else am I doing with my hair - if you're wearing "protective" styles or your hair isn't being saturated in water/cleansed at least weekly, then you might need to treat the effects of that to prevent damage. If you do heat styling, stretching, twist outs, braid outs, you probably need to treat your hair to avoid damage. If your hair is chemically processed or you aren't using quality products in your hair, same thing.... last summer my hair was exposed to quite a bit of chlorine, sun, and extra washing/ manipulation so I had to give it some extra TLC. My daughter goes longer in between washes and wears 2 strand twists often- I use oils/ butters on her hair occasionally to protect it because it's more vulnerable... she also needs clarifying more often than I do... bottom line - listen to your hair. Your hair only needs what it needs. You don't need oils and butters if you're a wash n go girly and keep up with your hair care/ maintenance. That being said - oils and butters will not ruin your hair either if you're keeping up with your care and maintenance.
@JennJackson
@JennJackson 6 ай бұрын
I agree. Wash and gos, curly cuts or not using raw oils will not damage your hair alone. Being mindful of your hair routine along with products used will determine how you should wash. Some of the recommended products having very little oils yet, with people using all purpose/ clarifying shampoos, I think it’s leaving their hair stripped over time which is why are are seeing damage such as these severe splits.

That’s a different story. But when I used the innersense as per my stylist recommendation, my hair is soooo dry! And I use deep conditioning. I do know uncle funky’s have the same ingredients as kinky curly and I have used uncle funky before. I didn’t get that dryness as innersense.

You know it’s interesting you say that. There was a woman who was following the method and was even in the digital salon asking for help because she felt her hair was always so dry. Of course, she was told it’s her texture and to give it time but she just knew it wasn’t right. She switched her products to the Kinky Curly line and her hair had been thriving ever since. Innersense has some good conditioners but I don’t think their gels add enough moisture to our hair types.

@@JennJackson it wasn’t her texture , because I reached out to my stylist n asked for help because my hair was a dry frizzy mess by the 3rd day, and she told me don’t use any leave in and lots of water. I tried for weeks. I did go back to using a leave in with it and I was still getting the same results. I said ok. It’s winter I will revisit when it gets warmer and see if maybe it’s better for warmer weather. I do like their shampoo. But the I create hold wasn’t working for me. It’s so expensive I want it to work, but my hair wasn’t looking and feeling right. And to be clear I wasn’t one that used a bunch of products to say I don’t know what my hair feels like.
