Greetings and Happy Sunday Jenn. I love that our Americanized African/ indigenous communities are having conversations about our personal care but if I'm being honest it feels like a weird obsession when it comes to our hair, with all the things happening around us that truly affects our lives SOME of these hair tutorials in my opinion has everything to do with our feelings of powerlessness in certain aspects of our lives so we turn our attention to hair because we can " control " that Right? No we can't even do that correctly. Everyone knows " Healthy " hair starts from within So what are we putting in our bodies and what is it our bodies need and require to function at its maximum. We figure that out then we can begin with what we put on our hair and bodies and really invest time checking out what we are purchasing to use. All curls are not created equally and depending upon what our bodies are doing or depleted from does change how our curls will react. We need moisture and products to assist with hydration, we must know when to clarify our hair from products used, What products helps define our curls without drying them, but also can your hair be cut wet and be even? No one here can tell you that so it's our job to notice what out stylist are doing when we get our haircuts. Learn your own hair language because you are supposed to be the first to know when something isn't going right Then you go to the Dr Well the same thing goes to our hair. Go beyond KZfaq to see whether a stylist is a hairdresser because there's a difference . The stylist may be able to give your locks or tresses beautiful Dos but are your tresses being treated for what it needs? Most important we are in a political election cycle Vote using common sense because what does it mean to have beautiful hair if laws are passed that will not allow us to afford to go to a salon or have access to better quality of food to nourish our bodies or be able to afford products. Support Black Beauty Supply stores if possible and demand distribution companies be black in those stores..We can make everyone else Rich except for one another and there is enough to make everyone finances more.. Let's do better by one another

Loc-ing them up would've looked really nice. Also the retwist is once every few weeks or so, and the roots make them nice and voluminous. But I understand every hairstyle takes work of some capacity. Hey, there's always your afro, cant go wrong with that. Lol

Really really cute!..... But I FEEL you on the take down 🤦🏾‍♀️ I also feel you on not having the time anymore for all that with a baby. I used to do my own box braids before my baby came. Now she's 2 and I haven't braided my hair in over 3 years. 🙅🏾‍♀️ Too much work. 😂

1tbs glycerin 2tbs each: melted pure raw lanolin, yellow Shea butter (Ghana is my fave) put in freezer (global warming is real) and use in wet perm rod set! Avoid fun on scalp slathering, especially if allergic to wool. This is my holly grail oil mix

Watching this as I prepare to Revair my hair... Something I actually don't do regularly. I love the idea of wearing my hair natural with little to no stretch. I used to love my TWA and I love my afro now. My issue is knowing how to maintain that without my hair getting super tangled. And by that I mean styling it over the weekend and not having to do much if anything to it until the next weekend (because I know I'm not willing to commit much time to it duringthe week, and especially not in the mornings). It's definitely worth checking out some type 4s with similar hair length and seeing how they maintain their minimally manipulated styles. With the right guidance, I'm definitely here for it!! ❤

We deserve hair neutrality. Women of other races are not as obsessed about their hair being in perfect health nearly as much. Black women deserve that option too

I've never stopped using oils and butters on my hair but I stopped using them on my scalp for several years now. I have seborrheic dermatitis and grease on my scalp causes it to flake like crazy. The only thing I put on my scalp are medicated treatments.

I never stopped and never will. Natural oils and Natural butter were made for our skin and hair so I want those nature benefits. Now my hair sits at my navel all the way around with no uneven hair areas. As my hair grows longer its cut backto navel length. All due to Ayurvedic oils and butters

Thank you for this video Jen! I actually started this method off the back of one of your videos because I could relate to a lot of the issues you were experiencing pre detox. Also the "science" behind it made sense to me i.e oils repelling water, washing more frequently etc. And I think for someone who has no routine and has no idea how to care for their natural hair, this method is great for laying the foundations and getting to grips with the basics. However there comes a point where you have to assess your own head of hair and go with what it needs based on its behaviour as opposed to following what the method tells you to do. For me as a "4c" curly I never managed to get a wash and go to work for me, so my go to style has always been twist outs, and I think this is the reason why I havent experienced the issues others have. I always use a leave in under my foam because the one time I didnt my hair was super dry! For me, blown out cuts are an absolute MUST for my tight curls over curly cuts. I say all that to say, like any hair care routine, take the "rules" with a pinch of salt, pay attention to what your hair actually needs and do more of that. Thank you for always keeping it real with us! ❤

When it comes to oils and butters I don't put them on my scalp, because I produce a lot of oil naturally. I put the oils halfway down and comb them to distribute them to the ends. Butters only ever go on my ends.

My aunts and mom have a bad habit of commenting on the young women's bodies mainly weight and I'm working to correct that. I wouldn't say it's toxic because it's not malicious but i let them know it's inappropriate, it makes me uncomfortable honestly. And i haaaate when they tug on my hair 😵‍💫 my mom loves my hair but sometimes i wish she'd keep her hands outta my head honestly i don't love being touched in general 🤷🏾‍♀️ especially without warning

Thanks for this video and all the research you’ve done on this method! I knew I didn’t trust a complete elimination of oils from the very beginning of this trend. The people who are known for the very healthiest hair in the world (Indians) use oils! Additionally, when our African ancestors were stolen from their land, they were stripped of all those butters and oils that kept their hair thriving. This continued well into the 1900s, when the “hairdress” finally became mainstream. The key to the hairdress wasn’t that it made hair grow - it allowed the hair you did grow to stay on your head! So, yes… I do think the more frequent washing is important, but we can’t just walk out the door after that with a mousse.
