Putting a bigger and better outboard on, with wheel steering, and turning it into a power cat, might be a lot more satisfying (and, a whole lot cheaper and faster) than trying to re-rig it ad a sailboat. I think you are going to be shocked when you find out what sailing rigging costs. If not, you need to find a boat you can strip. Just look up what new winches go for.

If you ever want to actually sail that thing worth a darn, you’re going to need bigger and deeper rudders for sure and some dagger boards or swing keels for what looked like some slots for them in the hulls.
@jarodstrain8905
@jarodstrain8905 4 жыл бұрын
We used to live in a big steel hulled houseboat that was built in 1952. She looked like an old river sternwheeler, minus the steering wheel. We lived on that through the winter and everything in Minnesota. It was pretty basic. I installed swinging beds for my kids, a queen bed for the wife and I, a cast iron gas fireplace, and even a small washer dryer. Unfortunately we didn't have it long enough to finish the work that we started. It was always sort of that Cabin in the Woods feel. The project that never quite made it. It's been years ago but we still talk about that boat. I've even talked to the man that has it now about buying it back. I can't remember who said it but I love the quote, "there are worse things a man could do than messing about in boats."

That's the thought that's going through my head as well. Sailboat rigging, stays, winches, blocks, sails, lines, are going to be expensive as hell. Unless they can find an abandoned boat for sail for parts and strip it out. And, they still have the rudder and steering problem, and missing daggerboards. That's what I would do. Up it to a thirty or forty horsepower, use the motor to steer it, with cable or hydraulic steering, and finish it out as a powerboat. Fuel costs will be up there, but it will still be a lot cheaper in the long run.

I bought crestliner fish hawk, bass fishing boat for fixing. But I never give up! Lifted it into the air on wooden pillars I built myself. It was a huge pain to strip it, used, forgot how many cans of aircraft paint stripper. In the end some paint just wouldn't come off. Got a powerful power wash, and it barely blasted the remaining paint off. Painted with Alexseal, so that it is taken care of, now replacing all the plywood flooring,and the old carpet with vynil, do all wiring, and motor rigging. Quite some work remains, but I ain't quitting!

Be sure and reinforce the centerboard trunks before you restore too much of the cabinetry and bulkheads, they will be easier to get to. They were a weak point on the Iroquois'. Probably better just to make some good dagger boards. Don't make them too strong, you will want them to break before the boat does if you hit something hard. Sugar scoops look great and are no doubt very functional in terms of added speed and easy water access, though they will add a bit to your marina fees every time you dock. Keep things light as you rebuild, these kinds of hulls are very sensitive to weight! Especially in that size. Actually using modern materials gives you a chance to make a better, lighter boat than the original - and the original is a pretty good boat. No one makes them like that anymore. You couldn't even look at something comparable new, like a Tomcat, for the six grand that cost you to buy yours. You have a lot of work ahead but it could definitely be worth it. Now that you have had a dose of cockpit fun in the sun you see the value of adding a hard top when you rebuild. The British were not big on hard tops on their cats, they wanted as much sun as they could get in their climate! Look at Iriquois 30 "Osprey" rebuild for inspiration, excellent example. Hey good luck and keep having fun!

Looks to me that the easiest way to mount rudders on you boat its to remove the "Sugar Scoops" and mount a pair of rudders on pintels outboard. Otherwise your going to have to drill holes through your hulls, and creat whole new internal structure to mount your rudders to mount new rudders inboard. Good luck ;-)

Now I see the full hull . The added on extra back stop can help get extra speed and for swimming . To make rudder solution use a stainless steel round bar attacked to the original transom down through a hole in the new added on back section .Then attach a rudder to that . The present skeg is tad small for protecting a rudder I would add 50% to the present skeg and make rudder flush with that Skeg and make rudder reach out 2 feet . If the rudder turns out to be too big you can cut it down to 18 inches but bear in mind if you lose one rudder that its good to have extra so single rudder can cope with steering . The boat has dagger boards so I presume has the interior casing to take them . More easy to go with that . If the casing has been removed then more easy to block up slots and add keels to bottom typically 1 foot deep and 10 feet long with sacrificial wood on the last two to three inches so you can take a pebble stoney type bottom better

Suggestion: That PVC pipe to the throttle seems to be a weak spot. Perhaps a trip to an auto store and you might find a section of coolant line / radiator hose that adapts to the throttle tighter. A couple of hose clamps should help. Hate to see you break off the throttle or lose that pipe while underway.

I think it's a great ideabut I think they should have watched more KZfaq channels on boat navigation , buoy markers and safe passage before they ever tried to take that boat that far. And as far as repairing the boat there are a lot of videos and books! but if they weren't willing to watch videos or read about how to safely get their boat from one place to another place I don't see them doing it for that.

Didn't think about this before, how are the rudders going to attach to the skegs with the scoops covering the stern caps where the steering gear USE to be mounted. I can't stand it when other people try to make a boat more than what it was designed for. Scoops would look good finished but I would get a tyvek suit and a cut off wheel and descoop. I don't know how your going to steer under sail. Or, get a wheel and a 25hp and just motor. Shame, that's a nice small cat.

Imagine the possibility of being shot for a whopper. Where I live, the mighty whopper holds the possibility of needing antibiotic shots after consumption, but not of being shot. So- similar, sort of. . ;)

Did the boat ever have a rudder? I swear by the things. For directional control, a rudder and a tiller combine with balanced sails can really make a difference ;-)

What Boatyard are you in? Some of us are looking at options for hauling out at a reasonable priced DIY yard for our boat projects. Would be nice if we could call and compare rates. Thanks. Hope your project goes well. Keep the videos coming. We enjoy your content. ♡

Could you give me the details of the marina you hauled out at. Pricing per month, and any other important things that you can think of. I would very much appreciate it. Great winds your way

You've a ton of advice already, but I would suggest watching a channel called Sail Life, he has very in depth videos of restoring 2 boats, which will I suspect be of great help to you guys
