I found this 1976 Sailcraft Iroquois MKii catamaran for sale on craigslist and we go down to North Carolina to prepare it to motor up the ICW to a marina in Virginia. We have no boating experience but are ready for the adventure!

I’ve spent most of my life on boats and still currently work on a coastal Research vessel and in 68 years have made some interesting errors in judgment and hopefully learned from each. I bought a 28 foot trimaran a few years before retiring with the intention of getting it ready to sail by the time I stopped working. After almost two years of paying storage I realized that it was totally impractical and put an add on Craig’s list for a free boat. The smartest thing I ever did. It’s sat for 5 years now and he’s still paying for storage and hasn’t been by to see it once. It’s cost him around $7000 in storage and all he has is an old junk boat. And maybe a dream, but an expensive one. Getting under way in a boat with no rudder, oars? Of course radio is helpful and very limited boating experience is something you look back at and think “what was I thinking “ ? But I’m always amazed how many people seem to learn that way and get by with their hides. Being in protected waters is a huge advantage. I’m on the ocean and it’s not at all forgiving on the west coast.

She’s so similar to our first boat - Kittiwake. We sailed her from the UK to the Mediterranean, so they’re solid little boats once they’re made seaworthy 😊👍 We had no experience when we set off, so don’t worry - people learn fast. We can’t wait to watch the refit and see her transform. PS you may want to use a proper wind app, like Windy, to check the weather 👍

Jeez, the owner gave them 30 days free dockage. They took 60 and the seller had to prod them to get off the dock. Then he had to install deck hardware and teach them to steer. Old boats attract lots of nut cases.

9to5less some of the people are not to kind , my 2 cents get life jackets ,12 v deep cell battery ,100watt solar cell lights radio licence and antenna, prep sand the fibreglass that needs repair . Forget about sails get another 4 stroke engine like a 35 hp to a 50 hp make sure the mount will take the weight ,keep the old motor for spare in good condition and put chains on both motors so the don’t fall into the deep. The plywood should be at least outdoor rated as the glue will unbond if it gets wet , get safety supplies needed so your legal. I only go on the Great Lakes which will drown one also but big water is nothing to fool with be safe

@@9to5less I've been researching on how to build a solar powered boat. So far the catamaran design is the best for surface area of solar panels. I want to do it as cheap as I can and will be building my own lithium battery banks. I will pitch the mast and repurpose everything for electricity. I'm shooting for a hull speed of 8-10 knots. I like your approach to price, unfortunately right now building materials are high.

BOY O BOY what a way to get subscribers. I promise you I won't miss an episode. You have no boating experience but ready for the adventure. No boating experience will be the understatement of KZfaq. If there ever was a definition of the term "Ignorance is bliss" this is it. If you had even a little more experience you'd probably never do this in this boat. On the other hand, you two have guts like I've never seen. I solute you for this. Keep a journal of everything every day. Be as honest in it as you can. If you pull this off, you will get a book deal, and maybe a movie of the week contract. Keep lots of records and video of this brave attempt. Record all the good as well as the bad. It will some day make a fantastic book or movie. My best and prayers to you. Remember what doesn't kill us makes us stronger.

Nothing like a well ventilated boat. I’m sure it will make memories. It will be interesting how you spend the first 20 or 30,000 dollars getting it up to snuff. That storm on the horizon was probably caused by the owner screaming “Thank God” out the back porch when he heard you were coming to pick up the boat. If your heart is in the project, all the work will be worth it in the end.

@@9to5less, yes the full bridge deck is all about inside space. The Iroquois is 7 foot longer so it can spare a bit more inside space for the trampolines. The trampolines are nice to have if you get into bigger water as waves can break through them versus slamming into the bridge deck. I looked seriously at the Iroquois as well, but I wanted something I could put on a trailer and move around myself when the need came up and that ended up being the deciding factor for me. Need a big jet ski to propel the boat , need a docking station and remote control from main deck , then when you run in open water you have an escape vehicle.

Your boat needs a haul out. They are cheaper in the south hemisphere. You’ve got fiberglass, so I recommend some anti fouling coat for the hull. Spray foams might take care of any potential leaks on the inside. Bell-syphon to automatically pump out the water and Splash zone for fast but temporary hull repairs are your buddies in an emergency. Don’t forget the lifejackets, emergency radio and invest in a life raft. Good luck guys:)

@@9to5less Bro stay with this one... this isn't an old bayliner POS... you basically have is a sailboat version a 1969 corvette. Sails and rigging will be big $$$ when you get to that point but get a real helm and a bigger motor if you are going to motor around. Twin 30 hp would be the cats ass especially for redundancy and more so for docking and turning about in tight quarters

Two steering wheel stations under a clear dodger with sails and motor controls accessible to each side and the interior having sliding kitchen appliances on a rail system going forward in the upper unusable portion of the forward berths, facilitating room for ballroom dancing and reason for the mirrored disco ball hanging from the ceiling and all those LED lights might make for a good passagemaker.

My first project boat was, shall we say, “a learning experience”. After struggling for years, I sold it unfinished for a fraction of what I paid for it. Unfortunately, this project looks like an absolutely massive “learning experience”. On the positive side, my second project boat was sailing in four months and is worth twice the purchase and renovation cost. Your optimism is commendable. Good luck.

Howdy there folks! New sub love your spunk! I am quite late down the road from when y’all started, I’m from Maryland and there’s tons of marinas, & boat yards(junkyards also) where parts range but can get done really good deals down to free! My husband and I have done nothing like this but gotten free boats fixed them up and all that good stuff! I am honestly amazed at how many ppl give boats away! If you’re ever in the area and in need of help or anything we’d be more than happy to help, finding parts or whatever!
