It would be helpful if you did a segment on the terms you use for terrain. Saddle, Ridge, Valley, Bottom, Holler. Not sure how interchangeable those terms are? Really appreciate your determination, dedication and the reality of not simply editing out the days when, despite your best efforts, you come up empty. Thanks gentlemen. All my respect!!

Fun watching you guys chasing turkeys. You all run and gun a lot more than I do here. My best luck has been learning their patterns from a far and then setting up in the dark and be patient, call just enough to let them know where I am and then shut up and wait. Hope you score Ted.

Here's what went wrong. Early in the season before green - up the hunter is at a big disadvantage. You have two options. Through pre-season scouting locate an area with a lot of sign (scratching, tracks, etc). Go in and build a blind before season. Once season comes in go to the blind well before sunrise and plan on staying a good portion of day. The other option is be in the woods long before daylight in an area gobblers like to roost. At predawn whw

It’s a shame it’s got this way in Arkansas about 10-15 years ago I could slam the back door on my house at daylight or at dark and hear 3-6 birds the last few years I’ve hunted hard to just find a bird idk what has changed so much cuz the habitat hasn’t changed any here where I’m at in independence county but it sure is disappointing
@deltaflywayoutfitters6764
@deltaflywayoutfitters6764 5 жыл бұрын
Trenten Mcdaniel I hunt not very far from you then. Even 6-7 years ago I’d hear 10-12 birds a morning. Your drive around see turkeys in fields see lots of sign. Nowadays if you hear more than 2 birds a morning it’s nuts. You also don’t see the turkeys driving around you used to. I don’t get it. Northern Alabama is identical to our habitat and id say ours is better with all the waterways and hardwoods. They have way more turkeys but the same amount of predators, similar habitat, so I don’t get it. I mean we only get a 15 day season so obviously that’s not in. There’s some kind of issue we have and I’d like an explanation or at least a solution from the AGFC on why this has happened

You're spot on the Arkansas turkeys. Been hunting in the Piney Creeks WMA for many years now and it's been a slow decline for about 10 years now. Absolutely beautiful country, but the population of turkeys are low and the game and fish commission aren't doing anything to help the cause. Still can't wait for April 8th though...gonna do whatever it takes to find a few.
@bucks2beards194
@bucks2beards194 5 жыл бұрын
Chase Foster not much the game and fish can do. Hunters just have to start taking responsibility to help turkeys regardless of time and money. The damage has been done between predators, rainy weather during hatches, and several other things. It will take another 10 years of really good hatches to get us back to good numbers

Chase Foster explain what is “dead wrong” about anything I said.... If you want to sit around crying about how hard it is and that the government needs to help out then more power to you. As for me, I will spend my own time and money to help turkeys out year round.
@chasefoster17
@chasefoster17 5 жыл бұрын
@@bucks2beards194 I have no idea where you're getting that I'm crying. It's no surprise to any turkey hunters in Arkansas that the population is low, but AGFC could absolutely do something to help. Since you'll be leading the charge in helping turkeys in the state, please go out and fix our food plots. It's been a real embarrassment to see the lack of food plot management. 95% of food plots in the National Forest and WMA's have been abandoned and the ones that are still going are being planted with fescue from what I can see. Put some clover in there for us with your own money please. Secondly, please shoot ALL WILD HOGS as they are tormenting the turkey population. For some reason we do NOT have a year long open hunting on these things and I've only found two traps in the whole National Forest, which never have bait. You're blaming our problems on predators and weather, but the main predator isn't being stopped and the weather is just an excuse. Back in 2007/2008 we had one of the worst winter storms and Spring flooding in Arkansas that this state has seen in a long time, yet we still had a solid hatch and the turkey population was still thriving for a few years later. During this time, we still had the commission caring about the turkey population and putting money out there for it. Now everything is about duck hunting and putting the money towards that....I believe it's time to go back. Thanks for spending all your money Corby, can't wait to hear about the improvements you've made for us.
@bucks2beards194
@bucks2beards194 5 жыл бұрын
Chase Foster If a person wants food plots, they can go make their own on private land. I have never cared for the idea of public land food plots funded by the government. I feel like they are just an expense to make things easier for hunters who struggle otherwise. The natural habitat has an ability to sustain a certain number of turkeys. I’m not knocking food plots if someone wants to spend their personal money on private land, but there are better ways for the gov to spend public money. As for wild hogs, I can’t speak much on that matter because we don’t have a significant population here. I do agree that they should open an unrestricted 24/7 season on them. BUT if hogs were in fact the main predator, hog infested areas would show most devastating declines and hog-less areas would be much less effected. Even without hogs, my area has seen a decline of turkeys that is unreal. I can’t quantify the numbers, but I noticed the decline starting around 2010. Ice storms before turkey season have little (if any) effect on nesting hens and newly hatched young turkey. Cold, wet weather in LATE SPRING combined with pretty much any predator are what limits our young hatchling population. We can’t control weather, but we can control agricultural practices that destroy nesting habitat and predators (cutting nesting fields, improperly timed burns, bulldozing down wooded land, logging, etc). I couldn’t tell you how many local people and groups are ruining their public and private turkey habitats in the name of money. Chicken houses are common here and I have reason to believe that improper use of liter is spreading disease from domestic to wild birds. This is just a hunch. I don’t feel the need to specifically defend myself to you on how I spend my off season and my money to help my local turkey population, but I do what I can by any means available to me. I’d like for the game and fish to “do something” but there is very little that REASONABLY can be done. Hunters as a group are lazy when it comes to working and it shows when there is little assistance from the gov.... I get mad at the AGFC more than I’d like to admit, but I think too many people are demanding too many costly remedies when they really have no proof that any will work. There are some good ideas that just aren’t feasible. Duck hunters make the most money for AGFC, I get it, but I agree that Agfc puts too much focus on it.

Urgent Input Needed. I will be Mentor Hunting the Kickapoo Reserve [my assigned area which will be un- scoutable ] north of La Farge Wi next weekend. I have never hunted birds this early in the game. Besides brown clothes and long underwear what else does a guy need. Any Info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks LZ FYI Deer and Turkey Expo in Madison WI this weekend.

Need to make sure your hidden extremely well. Listen from the highest point surrounding creek bottoms and you might hear some turkeys. Then try moving in closer. Use the terrain to your advantage when sneaking in on birds because they can see you coming from a long way off.

Thanks guys. Your input was extremely helpful. Anyways setup up under 3 Tom's, heard 7 on limb then nothing all day. Roosted 3 that night. No hen chatter. They need 2 weeks. If your over that way let me know and I will share the coordinates. Thanks again, you guys are doing a great things. LZ
