So strange that people can't wrap their head around deaf and hearing people being together, but I'm sure the culture surrounding that is different in other countries

My name is Rebecca Himes and almost 67 years old now. I was born in Manila, Philippines and mostly lived there in Bicol. My father had owner a big farmer with some animals, fruits, vegetables, and river, I miss all of there :( I moved to San Francisco, Calif. in July 1973 from the Philippines while I was 19 years old, then moved to Arizona in 1990, maybe 39 years old with my husband and three children here in AZ. I have enjoyed to watch on this youtube of your nice history for few times. You and your wife did already touch in the Philippines, wow that you already have experienced there. I just saw your pregnant and a new girl baby few days ago. Congratulation for your new family together 😊

You and Zach look enough alike that you could pass for brother and sister. I met my future husband when I was a passenger on a cruise ship. He was working in the dinning room. I started driving from Bakersfield to San Pedro on Saturdays to see him. One time I was waiting for him to come off the ship and I heard this Filipino guy and gal, who looked like brother and sister, ask a crewman coming from the ship if their friend (and my friend) was still on board. I thought to myself "The guy is his friend and his sister is his girlfriend." My friend came off the ship, saw me, and told me "My friends are here to see me, but I'm going to tell them you are here and I am going with you." The guy was a friend from his home town in the Philippines and the gal was his girlfriend. The guy and gal got married in June of the following year and my husband and I got married five months later. We definitely do not look like we belong together. When our first baby was born, he had 2" long hair, standing straight up, and looked like an Apache Indian woman had given birth to him and handed him to me. I thought to myself, how could I carry a baby for 9 months and not have him look a little like me? Now that our children are adults, one can see both family trees in their features.

Such a cute story. But it is hard to understand why someone would think deaf/hh and hearing can’t marry? That’s like saying someone who speaks French shouldn’t marry someone who speaks Spanish. You love, you learn. Language, culture, family. It’s all good. ❤️

Hi there I have a question for you!! So I’ve always loved sign language .. even as a little girl I would get books from the library to teach myself. I took a class in college which helped me learn more too. I also became a note taker for a girl that then became my friend who was also deaf. I still try to learn more am hope to continue. So, my question is how do I know when ( or if it’s acceptable) to use SEE or ASL? For example I feel like a lot of people on you tube videos use SEE. Also, when I would sign with my friend she would a lot of times use SEE. So, she would sign “where you want to eat?” VS what I learned in my ASL class that you should sign “eat where you?” (( I think!)) I don’t want to make sure I am signing appropriately and make sense. Help!
@OurSignedWorld5 жыл бұрын
This is a good question. If you are interpreting for someone, always match the person you are interpreting for. If they are using ASL and want ASL, then you need to use ASL. If they are using SEE and want you to use SEE then you need to use SEE. If they want a mix then well you get it :) With your friends you can "pick" which ever you prefer I guess, unless they don't understand then I would use which ever they understand :)

Not only hearing ask that or question ...some of deaf community will say-why can’t be with deaf instead hearing ?

WOW, how incredibly rude! I am not one to be super offended but there are some lines people cross that are just too far! For example, we adopted our two oldest sons who are now 24 and 21 our biological sons are 10 & 7 and I'm only 34 for reference. So besides the fact that I was often confused for their girlfriend (awkward) I am white and my husband is Latino and they are Black and Middle Eastern so it was pretty obvious they were adopted but we still got people ALL the time that would say, "Oh wow are you his 'real' mom". Now listen we make jokes about race, or the many many other ways we looked very 'different' from your average family all the time heck with as many races as we have we are almost the united nations (buhbumbum drum sounds inserted for my joke, see what I did there lol) I also very very rarely let things get under my skin but this would flat PISS me off, right there IN FRONT of the boys?!?!?! I would simply respond, "well I am not their fake mom" and walk off as to not say anymore that was as nice as I could keep it..... but I do love you guys and how you are always smiling and able to laugh about this very rude person question. I love love yalls channel (ps lets be friends on Instagram Hear/Be Heard please please please shameless plug as the whole reason I found you guys was in my research for our new APP that will serve the Deaf / Hard of Hearing @hearbeheard) Anyways I love your joyful outlook on life though I know life is not perfect and you guys come up against struggles but always keep on a smile. Being so different I have had to tell our boys people can only steal your joy if you let them! No matter what we have had to go through in life we are still living and that is a blessing. God Bless! K'Lee

Yeah that would be very frustrating! That would bother me. This stuff does too but at the same time people are just ignorant and getting mad about it doesn't change things but it we can use our emotions to take action to create change by educating more people ;)
