Yes, horses called mares can produce milk when they are not pregnant, which is called inappropriate lactation or "witches milk". This is a rare condition that can occur in maiden mares, young fillies, or mares that are not raising foals. The milk can be clear, white, honey-colored, or milky, and the udder may be normal or slightly enlarged. The udder is usually not painful to touch or milk.

If Storm did get pregnant, it would have been before you got her. You could have a vet do an internal ultrasound to preg check her. It's the most reliable. And they can tell you how far along she is. 💖💖💖

It would be so cool to have a foal around, but I don't know how Rita would handle not being the baby anymore🤔

Here’s a weird animal story for you. I had a dog that picked up an abandoned kitten from the ditch and brought it home. She raised it. She had never had puppies before, but she started lactating and she nursed that kitten to adulthood. They remained best buddies for life.

A portable ultrasound scan will find a foal..

You need to have her palpated by the vet. This far along no need for blood test unless checking her health. Ultrasound can check development, but it is used mostly early in the first month or so. The Your gonna be able to clearly feel the baby cause it is 8 plus months. I dont think she is in foal. She is just not big enough. Yes, they dont have to get big and can hide it in maiden mares. If she is in foal you have to check your fields for fescue. She has got to come off that field if you do. Fecue is toxic to pregnant mares. If she is she will need a few shots due by a certian time. Load her up and take her to the vet.

I know sometimes female animals will do that. It would be cute though to see a little Stormy running around!!! I’m sure Rita would be a very proud aunt.

Wow, that is definitely something you'll get checked. On bonus with doing bloodwork, is other tests can be performed. If not preggo, can do tests to help figure out what's going on, if preggo, can make sure things are going well (any deficiencies). Bloodwork is a great thing at this point. but honestly Jami, wouldn't it be soooooo cute for you to have a baby Reign or Rain or Cloud/Cloudy to go with Storm? And Storm is such a beautiful mare, so striking in colors. Yes Rita is gorgeous and the boys are wonderful, but a baby/foal? Would be so wonderful. Hugs and I hope for healthy horse/s. Normally mares are in season every 21 days between April and September, so if she was covered by a stallion in September the latest she would have it is August, not that far off 8 weeks at most. Very often maiden mares do not show a lot until the last 4 weeks, and then they get round and heavy, and before birth the part above the tail either side softens to touch noticably

You don’t know a lot of her past history before arriving at the sanctuary. I hope whatever is going on she stays healthy.

Very interesting. This has never happened to me unless they are pregnant. Gonna be watching this. I did have one mare that got an infection in her teets, early in my learning process. The vet had to come out and basically milk her because it hurt her and I just couldn't do it myself. Wouldn't it be wonderful if she is pregnant? Lol a new journey raising a foal for you.

Horses go into season, and they can produce milk when not pregnant. It’s possible she is doing this because Rita is still young, also the male donkey testosterone that was at J&L ranch may have released a pheromone into the air. It can happen when they aren’t pregnant.

Another thing about pregnant horses. Their booties don't spread the way humans do with pregnancy. You would see more of the abdominal area sticking out to the sides on a heavily pregnant mare (not as much as goats but more than normal) At this point Storm just looks like a healthy well fed horse. If she is getting sore hooves or legs you might check the pasture for a lot of seeding grasses which can cause trouble for some horses. I believe with Cushings disease you would also be seeing an unthrifty appearance in her, not shedding, losing weight, among other things.

I bought a mare years ago and after a few weeks she had a bulging bag which had clear liquid coming out. Had vet out to do internal to make sure if she was pregnant or not. She was not, ended up being a change in grass which caused the swelling in udder and clear liquid coming out. X

Wow Jami. If she is pregnant when she came to you and they can develop milk 6 weeks before birth she could foal anywhere from now to early August if she is pregnant. I’m sorry but I kind of hope she is. It would be cute to have a little Cloud or Rain or Lightning from Storm. I guess we will wait and see. To be upfront I only know what I’ve seen on the internet or google. 🧡

We had a maiden mare that did the exact same thing. We knew she wasn't pregnant and after talking with our vet, he said that that is completely normal. It happens with some mares and there was nothing we needed to do and it would work itself out. If you Google Witch's Milk or inappropriate lactation, there is all sorts of information. The most likely reason why you haven't seen Storm in heat, is that a lot of mares won't show any signs of being in heat unless there is a stallion around. I had a mare as a teenager and I would rarely ever see her in heat, that was until I started dating my husband who had a stallion.

Wow! Wouldn't that be something Jami??? A foal on JL Ranch... a Longhorn ranch!! Wooohoooo.... May be by Chance, may be a Miracle - but would bring nothing but Joy - Chance/Miracle/Joy = GLORY at JL!!! And.... If it is just "witches milk", then we can call it just a 'Dream'. We can hope though, can't we?

Could be a false pregnancy, but her belly is lower and a bit rounder than it has been. A maiden mare does not always "show" as much. The blood test will tell, if positive then you could have an ultrasound done to get a guesstimate on how far along and approx. due date. If not, are you giving her a reg u mate supplement?

A couple of our goats do that and the vets call it a pseudo-pregnancy.

Ultrasound will tell you if she is pregnant, approximate due date, and possibly even the gender of the foal. Inappropriate lactation is not terribly rare nor always a symptom of any big issues.

Ooh how exciting & mysterious! Whatever the outcome IF there's a foal, how cute it will be, it will be loved. ❤ Maybe she is prior to you getting her, maybe it's a false pregnancy due to the 3 donkeys showing interest, being round expecting longhorns or even from mothering Rita? She looks very healthy and even more gorgeous. What an exciting mystery and hope you find out the answer soon. I've no knowledge of raising horses so I can't offer any ideas sorry. Have to admit, as long as no risk to Storm, I'm very excited at this possible news for you.
