It goes wrong with turbos when the car is not serviced with the correct grade of oil at the correct intervals, no hiding it. That'll be why it's so gummed up and dirty on the oil feed pipes, lack of servicing for a long time. All the belts show serious neglect, 'it's still running so it doesn't need work' which is an all too common attitude. Then it becomes like that one, an expensive repair and it's the car's fault. As it's a TDi I think you'll find the 'catalytic converter' is a DPF Mark, which will be the next thing that'll go with it being neglected so long....clogged up.

Just a thought, it may be worth checking/ cleaning the Boost sensor (normally on the inlet manifold)

That looks as if the turbo has failed due to infrequent oil changes Use a flushing oil and some new oil and filter or you will be doing this job again in 6 months
