Fairlead is a maritime term. On a shipboard winch, fairlead means to pull in a straight direction on and off the winch drum, rather than pulling at an angle and creating a bird's nest on the winch drum. A fairlead on a self-recovery winch makes the winch line feed straighter on and off the winch drum, even if the line is at an angle outside the fairlead. ✌️🐸💨

I think it's more general than that, you can install a fairlead anywhere on a vessel where you need a line to run "fair". For example, the routing blocks for a genoa furler line could readily be called fairleads.

Every one I’ve been around is a turd like this one lol. A lot of the big blocks from that time period are pretty weak though. They don’t breathe good with all the emissions parts on them, and often they’re de-tuned from the factory. But this truck is also a wore out work truck, so that engine is probably loose as a goose internally and just needs to be taken out to pasture

@@jesseleesamples I’ve owned two in trucks. Both were box stock, but well maintained. My only complaint about them is fuel consumption. They have a serious fuel economy problem, but the power was very impressive for stock power plants. Sad but true about emissions gear. It has been sucking the life out of engines since around the early 70s. We need to assume that our air quality would be significantly had those systems not been in place, especially because of the massive fuel burn.

I’ve gat a Ford with a 460. Very reliable but yes, not the fastest out of the hole. Heard from an engine builder that Ford purposely slowed the engine by retarding the cam by 6 degrees and put in a weak 1st gear so that it would protect the u-joints and rear end. Fix those things and it would spin the wheels on a dually all day long.

The sticking ignition switch is a common issue and is dried lubricant on the rod inside of the steering column that bridges over the tilt mechanism to push on the starter switch mounted under the dash where it meets the steering column. Pull all shrowding, the steering wheel, and after pulling the two hinge pins, the tilt mechanism. Now, you can see the rod covered with dried up with grease. Put a rag where it can't drip on the ignition switch and spray down the rod from above with your favorite spray lubricant. Reassemble, and your problem is a thing of the past. I've had to do this on my 88 E350 Moter home and my 1988, 90, and 92 Ford F350 pickups. By the way, the E350 has the E460, and with some mods, I can drag my 2K Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 behind it uphill at 70 mph like a dream. But like its replacement, the V10, the 460 is a gas hogg! The pickups all had the 7.3 diesel and would pull a brick wall. Warning: watch the timing of the ignition switch cylinder holding mechanism as you remove it to get the tilt mechanism off.

Hydraulic die crimpers are way better than that impact thing. They push the wire strands in together instead of apart, creating less gaps for the copper to slowly flow over time and loosen up. For permanent connection in building 460v, we ALWAYS use the hydraulic crimper to avoid callbacks from hot spot related issues. If you want the best ground, get you a hydraulic crimper set. They're awesome. You'll see what I mean when you use it. It looks nicer and will perform better. They're like $20-30 for a small one that does this size, so worth trying.

I’ve seen a 460 you wouldn’t recognize by simple cam upgrade. The most important change is to throw the crankshaft timing gear into the next state and replace it with the gear from a 429 Cobra jet. The half-tooth change on the crankshaft make a huge difference on the cam timing. Usually you will pull a hill a full gear higher.

The main reason Fred is Running poorly and eating fuel is the manifold leak i hear all the fuel is not making it to the O2 sensor so its Adding more fuel than it should!

Fairlead. It's a nautical thing: in this case the fair refers to smooth and a fairlead was traditionally where the anchor or mooring ropes came out from the ship. These needed to be fair (or smooth) so that they didn't abrade the ropes (lines) when the ship moved against it's anchor/ moorings.

i got a super duty f450 460 brush truck at the fire house i would say is not gutless number one things we have to tell drivers is to slow down on off road trails we got to put it in 4 low not because of it being impassable but it real gears her down to a maintainable trail speed.

The way you paint Robby, it'll be awesome! My opinion is you could do a nice 1/4" wide pinstripe on the outside edges of the yellow. Just a thought!

from Wikipedia: A fairlead is a device to guide a line, rope or cable around an object, out of the way or to stop it from moving laterally.

250 Amp Alternator good call. Be advised "Big Boy" Alternators need a heavy wire connected to the Alternator body to the battery Negative terminal. I run a heavy wire from the starter to the alternator to the battery negative terminal, all happy!

Add me to the 'don't do a diesel' camp. You don't need all that weight up front. Just set up that 460 correctly.

I think it would be cool to see him pull that motor and have someone that knows what they’re doing go through that motor and get rid of all non-essentials under the hood and a manual transmission the truck will go fine. It irks me to no end when he’s calling it gutless when it’s in 2 Wheel on a gravel road going up a steep hill with the tires spinning.

When you put heat-shrink on, best to use a hot air gun instead of a blow torch. The flame tends to melt the heat-shrink which damages it.
