I really liked this because it explained to me as a rock musician what to listen for. I don't pretend to understand the classical world, and hearing you guys explain why someone sounds the way they do is great entertainment and education at the same time.

This is INCREDIBLE content: Entertaining and exactly as nerdy as I signed up for. Please do more, watching you guys dissect pieces and share your thought process is incredible for non-musicians/beginners like me.

I know many people have said this already, but I really really love when you guys get into this type of stuff, because this is - essentially - why I love you two so much: seeing my true passion represented. The nerdy passion-driven content is what I'm here for! ;) And the game/guessing type framework only adds to the fun; it gives musicians a chance to test their knowledge, and non-musicians a chance to expand their knowledge in an entertaining way!

I'm a noob to strings but there was something about Hilary's Chaconne that was just outstanding. Like, the others were great but hers was heavenly. I can't really describe it.

Amazingly I did really well except for the last round, because of TwoSet I have listened to and watched so many violinists, also at 67yrs old I have taken up Cello.

I could easily, EASILY, watch like 600 more hours of just this. I was just discussing you guys with my parents today and my father mentioned that his mother (a pianist) used to do this with her advanced students. A little group of them would gather together at their house and listen to a bunch of recordings of the same piece and then just sit there and discuss them (and my father would sit over in the next room and listen to them). I've forwarded this video to him. I think he'll enjoy it a lot as well!

I loved their reaction on hearing Hilary's chaconne. This was the first recording by her I ever heard, having never heard of her before, and I immediately fell in love with her playing. I had listened extensively to Menuhin's rugged and emotional recording from his teens, and played it myself religiously on the guitar. At some point I decided to look for other recordings out of curiosity, and stumbled upon Hilary's. My immediate reaction was "this is the shit right here!". I felt like I found the violin equivalent of Glenn Gould; she seemed to understand the piece better than anyone I've ever heard, and it was the most mature rendition of it I've ever heard, and she was only 17 !

I hope Twoset see this comment because as a viewer I really like these kinda videos. I’m not a musician or have any kind of musical training, but I really enjoy these videos. It’s as much fun for me to watch as it is for you guys to make so please keep making this style of content. I get excited about it. It's honestly wild how skilled, musical and in tune Hilary is. She's so expressive without being overdone. It's incredible how fine and tasteful she is while still sounding strong.

As an amateur musician and non-violinist, these videos are the best kind of content on your channel! It’s fascinating to hear already well-known pieces played completely differently and see what those who know how to handle that instrument have to say about it.

as someone who doesn't really listen to classical music outside of TwoSet videos, it's so fun to listen to the nuances of each recording! Janine's interpretation of the Mendelssohn was so gorgeous I can already feel a downward spiral coming...

Just a guitarist over here…. I was AMAZED at the attention to detail you two exhibit here. I doubt I could tell different guitarists apart when they are playing the same song. But, after watching this, I can’t help but wonder why I’m not pushing myself to that level of understanding. So, you know, I’m not a violinist or even classically trained. But I find this very inspiring. I need to improve, time to go practice :)

I will always recognize Hillary's playing, she has a very unique crisp tone and a perfect sort of bow scratch in between notes. She really knows how to scratch a musical itch!!

Brett & Eddy: I'm hoping you guys make more videos like this. For me this is the type of content that I kind of feel like I always waited for when I hit that subscribe button. The nerdier the better, you know, stuff loaded with music theories and playing techniques/styles and backstories of musicians...etc.,etc. These juicy stuff had my ears perked up and at the end of every single one, because you guys and your team are so good at upping the game, there was an inner standing ovation on my side, as I ALWAYS played along. I also enjoyed all of your less-heavily-about-music stuff. They are absolutely delightful. But truly, this is the type of video that's worth the weight in gold.

I love how clear Brett and Eddy can be about WHY they chose who they chose. Being able to describe that is not easy.

For some reason, Christian Li's performance of Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso was my favorite. To me, that piece sounds best when played with a more "childlike" playstyle, intricate, on time and careful as opposed to more emotional and taking more liberties with tempo. All to say, it was beautiful.

I just love hearing Chloe Chua play - she is so technically amazing but also has passion and power beyond her years So incredibly interesting 🎻🎼🎻 Excellent video guys!

I actually wanna thank you two for introducing me to Augustin Hadelich. He wasn't really on my radar before I started watching this channel, and now he might be my favourite violinist. I got to hear him perform live in Vienna last week, which was completely amazing, and the KZfaq video of him playing Tchaikovsky with the FRSO is probably my favourite performance of this concerto (sorry Brett, yours is great too ofc!)

10:00 it really is amazing how much more moving this was. The clarity and emotion is outstanding, even for someone who isn't classically trained at all. Bravo, Hilary!

This was so fun! I closed my eyes because, as a violinist, I wanted to test myself. I think showing the answers during the test for the non-violinists was good, but I had fun testing myself, and I did pretty well! 😁

Guys this was so much fun!!!!!!!!! My dad is a professional violinist, and I grew up listening to this stuff. While I love the more casual content you do as well, this is the kind of stuff I really watch for. I guess I might be in the minority. By the way I was able to guess 14 musicians correctly. That's not taking into account that I accidentally saw bits of the video for a couple of the rounds (if I saw it, I didn't count it as a right guess). By the way, I wish the editor would put more of a warning when the video is going to start, for those of us who want to play along. Also I guess it's a good thing it was Ray you offended, since he's your friend and will (hopefully) forgive you.

I always loved the idea that people's personalities/essences can be discerned from others by the way that they do things, even if it is something structured, and this video is such a good example of that! Even when the musicians are all playing the same pieces, there are still characteristic bits of each performer that naturally result because of who that person is and how they want their piece expressed. Great video!

Loved this! I feel like Anne-Sophie Mutter's violin has more of a "smokey" sound - not as "clean" and sharp as some of the others. And I love what you said about Hilary - after that first comment I was able to pick her out in every example!

Videos like this are why me (and many others I presume ) love this channel. You are natural and seem to genuinely enjoy it, and us classical music nerds love the discussion, play along and enjoy every second of it! Very much preferable to clickbaity and fake reactions videos, but I understand it's KZfaq, hate the game, not the players. Having listened to Chloe's Ysaye *literally* hundreds of times, and Augustin's Ysaye about a couple dozen times (and Hilary's a couple of times, which is enough to note the more atypical phrasing), it made Round 7 trivially easy to play. I'm not sure I'll ever forget Chloe's recording for the rest of my life (that room she was in has great reverb, and she makes excellent use of that reverb). Funnily enough, Augustin's style is so distinctive that, only ever having heard his Ysaye and nothing else, his style was still clear as day for Pag 5 as well, which made that round pretty easy. Brett and Eddy, I totally recommend you compare Augustin's Ysaye for comparison too, it's almost as great as Chloe's recording. (Also, there is a super dope piano transcription of Ysaye 3, and that arrangement drives home Vengerov's comment about it being so harmonically rich as to be chamber music more than solo music. Recommend that everyone check out that piano version too) PS Here's another fun fact: only Augustin plays the final note of Ysaye 3 on the correct rhythm. Literally everyone else, Chloe, Hilary, Maxim, and the piano transcription all play the final note with an extra rest inserted before it, which sounds super strange. Augustin is much better in this regard.

This is so far one of my favorite videos on this channel (and I've watched at least 75% of the video here)! A lot of people don't get the classical music is not just about expertise (which can be proven in your "classical and pop musicians eye to eye" video) but so much of it is still about artistic choices and articulations. Please please do more of these and maybe invite musicians who play other instruments to do something similar, like, differentiating different cellists lol

9:59 I had no idea who was who, but when I heard that powerful, clear, and resonant chord, I had goosebumps as if I were somehow listening to Bach himself play the fiddle in heaven. So beautiful! It had to be Hilary; the others were good -- one even had very obvious Baroque tuning that immediately stood out --, but only her performance really felt excellently authentic.

I don't play violin but I've been watching TwoSet for almost 2 years now. I played along with my phone turned down so I couldn't see who's who. I made zero mistakes from the 3th round on and paused each round to make a choice and not guess. It's insane that I can really hear the difference between each violinist so clearly now. I can really tell when it's Anne Sophie, or Maxim, Hillary, Ray, Chloe etc. Well done TwoSet ❤️

THIS WAS SUCH A GOOD VIDEO!! As a pianist, I could only pick apart some of the nuances between each performer. But Brett and Eddy had so many good things to say that I didn't even notice until hearing the performance the second time!

The first round was amazing: #1 was a hopeless romantic #2 was a man in pursuit of love #3 was the innocence of a girl dreaming of love to come

I closed my eyes and played along, and what I found as a non-classical musician was: 1/ The playing styles of the masters in the past were very different from the modern ones. 2/ Female soloists do sound more 'feminine' and have a quality that's not present in the male soloists. 3/ Young prodigies are a bit less 'expressive' compared to the others, even though they have very fine skills. Thanks TwoSet for teaching me so much about classical music with all those entertaining videos

It's funny how, thanks to Twoset's influence, I can pinpoint performances by Hilary Hahn, Janine Jensen, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Ray Chen, and Chloe Chua, even though I'm a non-musician lol. I couldn't recognize the others' performances mainly bc I've never heard of them and so never listened to them. I guess it's time for me to expand my classical music playlist :D

hi with you two, first of all I want to thank you because you make classical music cool. what I want to say is that I hope you know how lucky you are because your mother and father gave you a chance to play music when you were children. I play electric bass, sorry😉. I started when I was 18 years old, my dream has always been to play the cello, but that was not listened to when I was little, I had to drive motor sports. I found out that life is fragile as I have been very, very close to the love of my life, my wife, dying of a blood clot. she is 50% paralyzed, but she is ok today as you can be, but she is very affected by a blood clot in the brain, but I am so grateful that I have her. we are both 43 years old today and a year ago I decided to start playing the cello. but promise me to tell the students you have what a great gift they have received from their mother and father. I loved this video. ❤️❤️❤️ I was only 4 minutes into it before I interrupted my husband to tell him about how I listening to classical music on a nerd level. When I was a child, music was the most important thing in our home. My dad has perfect pitch, and a musical performance degree. He insisted that my brother and I take classical lessons for decades. We always went to showrooms to play various instruments before purchasing/upgrading to a new one. My mom, who has no musical training, could never tell the difference between the instruments. My brother, dad, and I can all tell the difference based on wood, and luthier. Not to mention a brand new instrument versus one that's been around a while. My dad plays classical guitar, my brother plays guitar and piano, and I play piano and harp. I'm so in love with this type of video. I'm planning on watching it again this evening with my kids when they're home from school. I want them to hear the nuanced differences between performances, and the individual choices the musicians make. They're all excellent, but they each have their own different interpretive style. That's what I'm hoping my kids will learn as they continue to study music. Thanks for nerding out over music. I loved it!

BTW yall are my reason to picking my violin back up. My last big hoorah was my senior recital in 2014. I kind of put it away for a few years. FF to 2021 I started watching y'all and got the passion for playing violin back. For Christmas I was gifted new strings and the money to rehair the bow. It's finally back in working order. When you get down to it, every player has their own unique vibrato, the way they bow, the way they move from note to note, a certain flair and/or way they play. After a while, you can kind of recognize them.

This was fun, please do more of these! As someone who doesn’t play an instrument or even know 90% of these soloist it was really interesting to hear how different the same piece sounds with different soloist. And I was actually able to successfully guess some of these, just by the sound of their experience, tone, or hearing them earlier from the prior pieces. Really enjoyed listening to your guy’s explanation too; it helped put into perspective of how I was feeling about each play style

I usually don't comment on your videos (even though I watch every single one), but I had to for this one to say that I LOVE THESE TYPES OF VIDEOS. Even though it was 30 mins it went by so fast because I was so captivated by each performance and your thoughts on them. As a beginner violinist I really appreciate the insight into violin techniques, musicality, violinists etc. Thank you Twoset for being amazing.

It reminds me of what we did in musicology master degree classroom, just a bit popularized and with just a fiew less scores and analysis. But even technical terms to describe differences are present, so that's great :3

Cello gang member here and I love these videos! Please do more! Would love one done like this but guessing cellists (Rostropovich, Du Pre, Ma, Casals, Fournier, etc.) playing Bach suites for example or pianists (Argerich, Gould, Brendel, Uchida, Lang Lang, Yuja, etc.) playing the Goldberg variations. Switching back to this video, the Bach Double has always been one of my favorite all-time pieces and it still amazes me at how vastly different the tempo can range between artists. I personally prefer it on the faster side à la Mutter & Zhou's tempo and even starting tempo can be such a unique identifier between artists. Thanks for continuing to make classical music less daunting and more accessible through these videos! Keep doing what you're doing because it's fantastic!

Wow, this was really insightful. Helped me understand the styles and interpretations that these world class violinists would make of very difficult and beautiful pieces. Hilary is such an amazing violinist!

Just echoing everybody else, the best thing about this is hearing how you analyze each piece's sound and the little things that make each one unique. And I love hearing all the pieces next to each other, and hearing their differences. Like, in the Ysaye set, they were all obviously beautiful, but Hillary Hahn was the only performance that legit gave me goosebumps listening to it.

This was epic, loved it! It shows that even though the notes are the same on paper the player determines the mood and colour through their own style of playing and it is simply beautiful.

I'm pretty late to the video but I'm amazed at myself for even tell Hilary Hann's violin apart from other violinists. Her intonations are truly vibrant and expressive.

I can't quite understand the very technical stuff, but from your explainings I could also feel the differences in the tiny bits. I think why many people don't listen to classical stuff is because they don't understand why it is so amazing. For me it was the same. I liked the very popular pieces but since I watch your videos I am dedicated to learn other classical pieces, even if it's just for intermediate beginners. To answer your question, YES I LIKE THIS KIND OF VIDEO!! I tried to play along and got 10pts!! I actually wish editor san didn't reveal some of them so early cuz I ended up having to void my points. But this was a really fun exercise!! Also not familiar with some of the featured violinists here so it's nice to be introduced to their playing and style.

This was pure joy- watching Brett and Eddy's excitement at some of the soloists 😌 especially Eddy bouncing up and down!

And notice everyone, that at no time do either of these guys say that one performer is "better" than another, or that one player is "the best." They obviously like Hilary's playing very much, but don't put down any other player, although they do point out problems they hear, like Joshua Bell rushing. (Hey folks, it happens.) So rather than trying to name one performer as the best, or give him or her some kind of superior designation, let's just enjoy these great artists as individuals, and realize that this is not a competition, it's just emotional expression. Any one of us may relate or respond to a particular performer in our own way, and it doesn't have to be framed as a competition, and in fact, it's rather ridiculous to even try.

I totally hear the differences and I never thought I would!

I played the violin when I was 11-13 and enjoyed it but I think it was my teacher who made it fun and he was definitely more of an old school kind of player and he played in the San Francisco Orchestra. Anyway, during my last year, the Bach Double was the last piece of music he gave to us more advanced/exceptional students, myself included, but it was definitely out of my comfort level and I didn't practice nearly enough as much as I needed to to be good. So listening to these amazing musicians play the Bach Double really brings back memories and makes me want to pick up the violin again just to be able to cross it off my bucket list. That said, it's well over 20 years since I last picked up a violin and I doubt I'd be able to even play it properly anymore. Still though, being able to listen to the Bach Double in its entirely is a treat since I was never able to fully learn/play it.

Speaking from the non-player camp, I absolutely *loved* this video. I find it fascinating how you can take the differences in a performance, some of which I could actually hear myself, and tell with a fair amount of certainty and accuracy who was playing. That is actually interesting to me. When you add in your...*unique* reactions, which I always enjoy anyway, it becomes something that I would gladly watch more than once. I think this is a great new game for your channel; I would absolutely watch more videos like this! 👏👍👌

I am so happy that I found TwoSet years ago. I went to my first live concert on saturday with Pinchas Zukerman and it was simply AmAAAAziiiing. Listening live is such a different experience. I don't play classical or know much outside of twoset, but I got the first 2 rounds right just because I've watched other videos where the world-class violinists appeared as guests/collabs and remembered the observations Brett and Eddy had about their play styles. You would think it would be harder to tell the difference, but each violinist has a very distinct and unique personality when they play and that gave it away for a non-musical person like me (I like music and try to put effort into listening to the details, but I am not musically trained or know all the nuances when it comes to playing). So cool!

So, I'm definitely not a classical music nerd, but I was able to guess the artist about 75% of the time (until Round 8 when I had no clue what was going on). It's possibly surprising how related the artist's personality is to their pictures and playstyle. There is a correlation, although not a total match every time.

Those were some truly jaw-dropping performances.
