Diabetics need to be careful on how much fruit they eat at one sitting. Berries are the best fruits to eat because they have fiber. When eating a meal with carbs also eat protein and non starchy veggies because it helps to regulate blood sugar levels. My parents were both diabetic so I have experience in making meals that don’t spike blood sugar.

Your love language is food. Mine is also food. Love your channel! I’m diabetic. CARBS are the enemy. Sugar free often has more carbs than the regular stuff. Green beans are healthy but 1/2 cup still has 15 carbs. Just because you are on medication doesn’t mean you can eat whatever you want. I avoid white potatoes, bread, pasta, bakery items.

Sorry Renea, but grapes are little sugar bombs, the only fruit diabetics can have are the ones that end in 'berry'...my husband was diagnosed with type 2 a year ago, and we've turned it around in less than 2 months with dietary changes....low carb (not NO carb), no sugar, no processed food, high fiber, high protein, lots of veg and berries, fresh or frozen...I make everything from scratch, and have a garden, like you...I make my own greek yogurt with whole milk...he loves it topped with berries, nuts, sunflower and pumpkin seeds and a couple tbsp of hemp hearts

Agreed, was type 2 myself & banana, oranges, grapes are high in their natural sugars...i eat the "berries" fruit~berries are also high in fiber & antioxidants...just look up foods that are either "high or low" in the glycemic index" Renae, it will gives you loads of info!☺️

Are you on Medicare? There's nutritional education available free. Just call your doctors office and ask. Or actually call your insurance company and ask what they can offer. There's so much available and it's covered by your insurance, and it's accurate information, from trained professionals. So many people mean well, but may not have up to date accurate information. Well intentions won't bring his numbers down. 😊

My advice is talk to a nutritionist even if you have to pay out of pocket. I dont have diabetes but have had family and I helped look after a disabled vet who had it. There are some changes you will need to make in your menus so you need to know. Limit white foods: sugar, regular flour, fat...except cauliflower, it is a good white. You are going to be great because your love of making food is going to change into love of making wonderful healthy food.

I was diagnosed with type 2 about 3 yrs ago. My husband about 10 yrs ago. The best thing you can do for you both of you is go to a dietitian who specializes in diabetic diets. It will really help you to understand what you have to do. Our main medication changed last January because my insurance changed so we’re both going through some problems right now because of trying to find one that will work for me and my insurance. Best of luck

Renae, I agree...fruit needs to be eaten in small amounts. Grapes esp. When I worked nights at an assisted living...if anyone had low blood sugar we would give them 4 oz of milk or a 1/2 of a peanut butter sandwich. That would raise their sugars...so just know that. Good luck to John.

Renee, your Dr.s office should know and hook you up with classes. They are very good, they will explain the fresh fruit issue, because as someone mentioned, becareful of the fruit. I would take a couple of those classes, and you will understand the exchanges better. Stick with the blackberrys n blueberries until you figure it out.

Hi Ranae! Whole milk is not bad for diabetics. Not at all. Main thing to be aware of are the carbs in whatever food you eat. Carbs turn to sugar that affects blood sugar levels. I am a Type 2 diabetic and it can be overwhelming just remind him to go about it with what is comfortable for him as he learns more and more of how foods affect him. Careful with the fruits natural sugar is still sugar stick with berries.
@nicolewatters4062
@nicolewatters4062 23 күн бұрын
Diabetics should start away from bread, pasta, rice, potatoes. Meat and veggies are the best. Berries and melon are pretty good. Smart carb ice cream by bryers is really good if he likes ice cream. Coconut sugar is best to use in homemade goodies. White sugar is 100 on glysemic index, and Coconut sugar is 51, so it's much better for diabetes. You use it 1 to 1, and i haven't noticed that it tastes much different than regular sugar. ❤ i don't suggest using fake sweetners because they are really bad for you. When i switched to Coconut sugar from splenda i didn't notice a increase in my sugar. I love mashed potatoes, so i use half potatoes and half cauliflower, and you can't even tell the cauliflower is in there. So that's a great hack. ❤

I saw a KZfaq video a few months ago showing how to freeze onions without smelling up your entire freezer. Either chop them up or slice them up put them on paper towels on a large cookie sheet and then cover them with paper towels for an hour or two to get the moisture out. Then you bagged them up and put them in the freezer and there is no smell. They also don't Clump together when you take them out of the freezer . This is the only way I do it now without having everything in your freezer smell like onions😊

If John has a craving for cheap style white bread, check Meijers for Aunt Millie's Live Carb bread..it's the closest thing to regular bread I have found.. Aunt Millie also makes other breads rolls and bagels. Remember it's about reducing carbohydrates. Men who don't need to lose weight need to stay around 50 total carbs a day..not per meal.

I started using flash food one year ago. I have saved $1480.00 to date. I have spent only a fraction of that to get all kinds of meat, fresh produce, lunch meat and cheese , nuts, juice, etc. I highly recommend downloading. I was sad to see that a 5 percent fee has recently been added to cover expenses to the store for servicing the flash food area. I have canned up most of the meat, and have froze lots of peppers, etc. I would never have purchased any of these things without the app..

LOL laughing at all that sugar you got going on your island over there, I heard that whole milk is best, because in low-fat, skim, 1 and 2 % milk have more added sugar than whole milk. So that's what I drink, also in moderation. That said, I eat and drink small portions, and add fiber with every meal. Meals with meat and salad and and a small portion of carbs will balance nicely.

Fruit contains a lot of sugar. Grapes being one of the or is not, THE most high sugar fruit. Fruit should be used sparingly. St most 2 servings per day. And a serving is very small. A lot of green leafy veggies is good. Carrots even contain a lot of natural sugar. Milk contains natural sugars. I use Fairlife milk as it has the least amount of sugar I could find. And as far as yogurt, I found that Kirkland (Costco) plain Greek yogurt has the least amount of natural sugars. I am prediabetic and use a Dexcom G7 CGM that I wear on my arm and it reads my sugar every 5 minutes that I can see on my phone. It helps you to see how each food you eat has an impact on your blood sugar. It has helped me to maintain a daily average glucose of 90. And a GMI of 5.0. You can ask your Dr. about the device.

Not only does fruit have natural sugar, but onions, tomato's, carrots have sugar as well. Also eating pastas and rice and potatoes have starch that your body turned into sugar. Yes whole milk has sugar in it. Also it has fat that work again blood sugar levels. It would be best to drink 2% milk or less. Watch the fat intake as well.

Dairy can level out your sugar spikes. Moderation and portion control is the key. Total carb gram on nutrition labels include the sugar amounts...try to stay under 20 grams. 15 grams per serving is decent. Foods that metabolize slowly; lean protiens, fiber/whole grains rich versus fast burning high starchy carbs. 1 gallon of water daily helps, too. No matter what sugar is sugar natural or not. 😊 I'm a type 2 and a healthcare worker. There's no simple solution for everyone it's a little different. Diet, sugar free and low fat tend to have a lot of processed filler ingredients that are not good for us. Don't suffer by not enjoying food...it will increase cravings and leads to over doing it...have a cheat night or cheat treat. Physical health and mental health work together. ❤good luck

All milk has sugar. The percent indicates the fat content. I have always used whole milk but stay away as much as possible. If he wants ice cream go for the Bryers low carb or no sugar added and stick to the serving size. Eggs, raw veggies, berries, nuts and hard cheeses are all good for snacks. Grapes and oranges send my sugar through the roof.

Renae…I just had an appt today for my diabetes. The biggest thing to keep in mind is portion control. Half cup portions until John gets a handle on this is your best portion size and SMALL meals 5 or 6 times a day over 3 meals like we grew up thinking as normal. John should try eating something every 3-4 hours max to get his blood sugar under control. I still find myself getting up in the night and snacking on something because nights are long and blood sugar needs to be babysat to keep it in control. Lots of water or green tea also helps. I’ve been a diabetic for going on 17 years and there is nothing normal eating a diabetic diet and every day is a new day. Stress is Johns biggest enemy in all this so DON’T STRESS about this first and foremost. I’m sorry to say this but some of the commentary I’ve read here isn’t entirely accurate. Bananas are ok and I use them with oatmeal or peanut butter but start with 1/2 a banana at first. John’s blood sugar readings will give you a great idea as to what triggers him. Everyone is different because the pancreas works differently with everyone’s sugar levels. Oranges and grapes are fine too but IN MODERATION and as I mentioned before if John has a blood sugar drop OJ will quickly bring his blood sugar back up. He will know if he has a blood sugar drop because he will sweat like he’s just jumped out of the shower and he will shake and want everything he can get his hands on to eat. Low blood sugar is cold sweats whereas high blood sugar is hot sweats and headaches USUALLY as well as blurry vision. I have found Pinterest to be very helpful in what is good snacking, good carbs and good sugars. I use a lot of Stevia as a sugar replacement in my cooking and baking. You will be fine once you wrap your heads around this but just don’t get frustrated. When in doubt…ask for help. I have all the confidence in the world that you and John will get a handle on this. I am dealing with blending my diabetic diet with Hunny’s NASH diet for his liver and the DASH diet for his kidneys. I thought I’d never figure it all out but everything in moderation is key including ice cream. I buy the low sugar ice cream at Aldi and have 1/2 cup with fresh fruit about once a week. Proteins, fresh fruits and veggies and low carbs…it’ll work and John will get his A1C in the green in no time. Also Renae, I just don’t understand this flash foods program. Could you please go through this because I’d be very interested in it if I understood what I was doing. I shop Mt Pleasant, Big Rapids and Greenville Meijer and I see nothing about flash foods!!!:):):)

Hello, you two beautiful souls. My husband was diagnosed with diabetes 8 years ago. We have had all of the ups and downs while trying to figure out the best diet. about 6 years ago we tried the keto diet and had pretty good results with it, but he would occasionally slip and consume things that he shouldn't have because he had cravings. In the last year, we have found that he has fewer slips with a high protein, high fiber, and good fats diet. We aim for 100 to 120 grams of protein every day. If he eats more than 120 that is fine, but he does best if he eats at least 100 grams. He also eats as much high-fiber as possible. As for the fats we stick to butter, EVOO, coconut oil, avocado oil, and ghee. He drinks and eats plenty of dairy but we try to keep it in moderation and we feel that he does best on full fat. We stay away from oats of any kind because they raise glucose high and fast, we also only eat grapes after eating protein, fiber, and fats, because on their own or eating first in a meal seems to spike sugar. The best way to figure out what spikes him is to use his glucose meter often and pay attention to what he is eating. We haven't found any problems with fruit consumption except for the grapes, but this is where John should use his glucose meter to figure out how his body reacts to them. We avoid pasta, and rice instead choosing to substitute, cauliflower and broccoli rice, and spiral cut zucchini, butter nut, and spaghetti squash. We try to keep his carbs at less than 20 mg per day. Autumn Bates has wonderful recipes and suggestions for high protein dieting, we use a lot of her suggestions and ideas.

One thing I may add is eating too frequently will keep his insulin high which is the main cause of all metabolic disease and of course diabetes so if he eats lots on meat and non starch veggies until he is stuffed he will not be as hungry and could go at least 4 to 6 hours or longer before he feels hungry again and what I experienced was even eating just meat and veggies my triglycerides went down my helped went up so they may want to lower his statins and I am no longer on them and no more insulin .. by the way statins are the cause of so many people developing dementia and Alzheimer’s. I was forgetting a lot and brain fog so glad I found out about that aw well have a great day

Fruits are pretty much a NO as they are loaded in sugar moderation is fine I suppose but not the best snack and grapes are a big no as they're sugar bombs

I have one BIG pet peeve with some doctors. They will say, "Oh, sure. You can have sweets. Just adjust your insulin." Nooo! PLEASE don't believe that advice!! Diabetics crave sugar, and it becomes very difficult to control how much they eat and their blood sugar levels. It's like telling an alcoholic they can have beer if they take a shot to counteract it. See what I mean? None of the people I took care of who followed that advice were able to keep their sugar down. Three of them died early in life due to the ravages of uncontrolled blood sugar. I'm not saying this to scare you, but I want to make you aware. It's best to leave all regular sweets alone and stick to those things that are safe for him. I've never witnessed anyone who took that advice keep their sugar and disease from progressing. He will get used to not having regular sweets. He just has to bear with it. My best to you both!🎉

Sorry, John cannot eat all kinds of fruit.. the only fruit is in the berry family.. the best are strawberries and blueberries! They don’t spike up the insulin.. but most fruits need to be avoided. While milk is fine. Look at the sugar on all packages. The less the fat the more the sugar.. for example skim milk or low fat have more sugar in them. There are a lot of KZfaq channels with low or no sugar information. If you want to get John off the insulin, zero or very low sugar for him.

Grapes are a no-no. Fruit in moderation, berries are good. Yoir doctor should have given you a list of foods. Maybe look for a local class to learn about diabetes.

Really??? LOL pineapple and bananas, good for you but VERY SWEET. Protein is your friend, if you need a lil boost of sugar, eat one of those tiny lil 2 bite candy bars. This is straight from my dr......

Diabetes needs protein. Help keep insulin in balance. Also check out carnivore diet. I've heard it has helped tons. Check out Alaska peppers you tube channel. He started that diet as soon as he found out he was diabetic. ❤❤❤

I am diabetic and my sister is also and what I can tell you is foods affect us both differently. I can eat potatoes where she cant. Also everything in moderation. What I get so upset about is once I was diagnosed with diabetes everyone kept telling me you cant have this you cant have that anymore blah blah blah. If he sticks with a balanced diet he should do ok. You two will figure out what works best for him.

Skim milk, 2% milk and whole milk have basically same amount of carbs. I'm diabetic and retired nurse. I went to a workshop once on diabetes and the dietician said the only reason to give skim milk or 2% milk to a diabetic over whole milk is if the patient has cardiovascular disease. So if Mr Wayna doesn't have Cardiovascular disease he can have whole milk but in moderation because of the carbs in it. Best is almond or nut milks if he likes the taste. I don't...lol
