We can recommend this air hammer for light work: amzn.to/2OJMCDx We realize this isn't a "dyno" since nothing is spinning, but we like the word :) Brands advertise things like "more powerful" "powerful blows" and all types of nonsense on these tools, but we have no idea HOW powerful any of them are, and as it turns out neither do they! Let's try, because even trying and failing is more info than any of these brands can provide it seems.

We're working on two more testing rigs now and in the coming months. We still love impact wrenches, and you'll always find the latest and greatest of those here. But we hope you guys will also support our efforts to bring some marketing honesty to more mechanic's type tools now (with air hammers) and in the future. Appreciate each and every one of you who watch. - Torque Edit: We can do cordless SDS rotary/hammer drills & small breakers as well to measure their impacting power if you guys want. Let us know.

Thank you TONS! I was just thinking about this the other day. I'd love to see an Atlas Copcop RRH12P on there and I'm fairly interested in sending you my Jiffy #600 hammer. As I'm sure you've discovered by now, the best air hammers are actually air rivet guns which are rated by size of rivet they can set which is also a fairly quantifiable and consistent way to measure gun power. That may be an option for testing an air hammer as well.

I’m very interested in this. At work we buy about 30 of the Chicago pneumatic CP717 model air hammers for oil rig work. We use them to drive wedge pins into cable securing clamps, when the clamps and pins are new sometimes it takes 10-15 seconds to drive each pin in due to the pin wedge design and tolerance. There are roughly 600 pins a job, and we do this 7 days a week so these hammers get a good workout. If there was a less expensive comparable power or more powerful model that would be interesting to know. Time is money when you are on a oil rig. We’ve used cheaper air hammers and sometimes it will not even drive the pin in due to lack of power even with the regulator cranked all the way up to 125 psi max pressure. It would be interesting to see also if there is a significant gain to raising the air pressure to a safe level from a minimum level.

I’m a little late to the party here but while you consider everything, check out the rivet gun scene. Several aircraft tool websites have the standard written down in a chart which sizes the guns from 1X up to 9X. The later sizes so big they deserve planetary status! South main auto has Big Nasty which should just be a standard 5x rivet gun. This is a better platform because of the trigger feathering you can do and generally they have a heavier piston moving around inside. It’s not any revolutionary information but your viewers might find it useful to know something about a relatively unknown side of the market.

For the test rig, you need a machine shop to make you a set of custom wedges. For the outside two that are L__ shaped, with one long leg at the top, the other at the bottom, Then stops at the ends so the outer feather wedges have support and the middle wedge is held so it travels straight, and cannot randomly move or fly out.

I've been told the snap on is the most powerful as well. When one was needed in the shop that was the one used

I am voting for rotary hammers as well! Most have hammer-only settings. They can even be rented from the Homeless Despot!!!!!!!!!!!

If you have piston mass, stroke length and impact velocity at 90psi (the joule figure) and the blows per minute, then you have a manufacturer spec for power sort of. Just multiply (J/blow)(blow/min)(min/60sec) to get wattage.

Wow, that's pretty interesting. Great way to continue to use the hydraulic ram concept for a new test rig.

I'd love to see the snapon ph3050b and the astro 4980, both of which I own and love. I find the snapon is better at rattling rusty stuff free because it hits at a higher frequency, but if I really want something to move, the astro is where it's at. I also find I have to be more careful with astro because it will do way more damage to whatever I'm hitting. I work in automotive btw

Fantastic work. One thing I think should be considered as sort of a side note is the item's durability or expected durability over a period of time.

I would make some sort of female end that goes over the wedge, and connect to the quick connect to the tool. That way all the blows are registered.
