Frank Stronach, founder of Magna International and a member of the Order of Canada, joins BNN Bloomberg's Jon Erlichman to talk about the path forward for Canada's economy. Stronach says technology should make things easier and better, yet ordinary people aren't benefitting from it due to the rising cost of living. He also talks about why he's concerned about Canada's tax system.

"We don't make things." - Frank Stronach A young couple in the 1950s got married at 22 and bought a home at 24, on average. A home was 2x median income. A young couple in the 2020s gets married at 30 and buys their first home at 36, on average. A home today is 18x median income. Wages have gone backwards because we do not make things. Good paying jobs are scarce. Chretien and Martin tried to tackle the debt in the 1990s, and they put us on a great path. Successive governments squandered the surplus and ran us into deficit.

Chretien did a good job with the debt, you are right. Guess who pushed it ever higher tho...

@@donm2067 Hard to believe Paul Martin and Justin Trudeau are both Liberals. One guy is worth 200 million and knows how to run a massive company and watch his money grow. The other guy is very personable but has about as much financial sense as a 12 year old.

The tax system is a reflection of the people who create it. In this case, unaccountable and anonymous top level bureaucrats (not the people at the counters or who work the phones) working with lobbyists and tax professionals. The bureaucrats hope to land future jobs in the very sector that they oversee, writing the tax code for their mutual benefit at the expense of others. Also the dual mandate of promoting economic growth and wealth distribution which work at cross purposes. Finally, people at all levels of society trying to game a system to reduce their tax burden. So the idea of a black and white tax code is impossible because the people who are creating it and are subject to it, are not black and white themselves.

Embrace the worker replacement technology for corporate benefit. Whatever business does is good for society. What is needed is a digital bill of rights.

Interesting. I love what he is saying. However, Magna only hirees through employment agencies owned by ... wait for it. His daughter. Yearly contracts with no benefits. Big difference between what he is saying and what he is actually doing.

I think you can do much better than Florida... Lower income tax is not the only thing important thing in life and there are other opportunities even within the States if that is your only focus.

Florida is getting expensive and check out home insurance rate as they have become outrageous, rents are high and they do have their share of issues as DeSantis is not for the everyday worker.

What does he mean that we don't make anything anymore? We made hundreds of thousands of social media influencers! And they get paid 100x the income of what people who make stuff do! 😉

Trudeau answer for all topics, economy, military, infrastructure, competitiveness, etc: Canada punches above it's weight, we are investing in the future. Means we are ignoring the important stuff to pay for other stuff for votes.

God this is the most brain-dead conversation I've seen in a while. More neoliberal and "trickle down" does NOT HELP THE AVERAGE PERSON. More tax cuts does NOT help the average person. Regulations are necessary. God, we've learned nothing from the last 40 years of this terrible approach
