The Suzuki Ignis is one of the quirkiest cars on sale today. It combines the Japanese company's small-car expertise and 4x4 know-how into one package. While the name is a blast from Suzuki's past (most notably on the rally-inspired Ignis Sport), the current Ignis is a car that trades on its style, as it really stands out from the crowd.
Supposedly inspired by the Whizzkid coupe of the late 1970s, the main talking point is the raked rear windscreen and the design of the C-pillars. Combine this with the chunky wheelarches and distinctive front end, and there really isn't any other car on the road that looks like the Ignis.
At a time where living costs are rising and cars are becoming more expensive with each generation, the Ignis is a genuine breath of fresh air - it offers everything a city car should at a reasonable price, and it's a shame that few other manufacturers are building such affordable machines in 2023.

They're actually pretty charming vehicles. I've driven them as they're like an original mini or fiat 500. They're just cheerful to drive. And you feel very socially responsible, too. If everyone drove a car like this, the roads would be emptier, traffic jams shorter and the air clearer.

A former work colleague has one of these and is very happy with it. OK it's about the size of a shoe on the outside but as you mention Suzuki have managed to make the most of the available space. If most of the time you don't need the extra space and do general commutes these cars could suite most of us. With city traffic slower than a triffid in a cracked plant pot and country lanes with err hmmm.... drivers that drive very, very carefully heading up a long tailback of cars, vans, tractor and the afore mentioned triffid there are fewer opportunities to really use the performance of most cars. It does not matter if 0-60 is in double figures. If like my former work colleague you need the extra space on occasion a roof box is available. Just take it off when you don't need it. Note, no triffids were harmed during the making of this post. Thanks for sharing Nicola.

Our roads are small. Car park spaces are tiny. On street parking difficult to find. A lot of us spend our drives in cars alone. So what to we do ? Force everyone to purchase an SUV ( by deliberately discontinuing alternatives ) to push through the electric agenda. There were loads of cars like these just a few years ago. Affordable transport for new drivers, people on a budget or people who just wanted a simple car. Well done greed. You've got the world you wanted through the green con.

Plus, the larger the car, the more fuel it consumes, the more tyre particulates it spreads, the more damage it does to the roads, the more it encourages pavement parking, etc., etc. ad infinitum.
@robsmall6466
@robsmall6466 Жыл бұрын
@@rogerc4963 The sensible thing would of been to allow petrol, diesel, hybrid, electric, hydrogen and anything else that comes along to coexist. Then if you want to by all means purchase an electric SUV. But they don't want that because they know if a petrol alternative for example is demonstrably better value those expensive electric SUV are going to sit there and go nowhere and in a year and a half be discontinued like any other struggling model. So they fix the game and do untold damage in the process

Here in the US we did have a period where there were many options of different body styles, sizes,and pricing. Everyone went for crossovers. So here I would say it's definitely was because of the consumer choice. But tbh the smaller cheap stuff like Fiesta, Sonic, Spark, etc etc were really crap. Plastic fantastic. Low features and low safety. Plus people who could throw 16k ish on what the card cost new could afford something much nicer to be realistic. Automakers barely tried here. The styling was also bad on most of them. CAFE regulations and small profit margins helped kill them off.
@robsmall6466
@robsmall6466 Жыл бұрын
@@baronvonjo1929 Assuming your Fiesta is the same as the UK Fiesta. That being the case can't say they are crap. Renowned as being good drivers cars. Interior is fine. Nothing outstanding but practical. As for safety they are perfectly safe. Is this due to it being a small car ? That's a misnomer in that case. We have motorways with 70mph limits and small cars are perfectly safe. It's how you drive and not what you drive. Modern safety scores are also skewed towards things like lane keeping assist etc. If a car doesn't have it then down goes the score.

What is there not to love about this car? Its perfect for cities and towns. Fuel efficient, compact, has all the must have features you would need in a car. I do not own one but my wife does. I myself drive a much bigger and heavier vehicle but I often love taking out this one. If you have the means I would say own a large car like an SUV/MPV and a small car like the Ignis. This car can get things done in less half the time I can with my big car. Parking in small, tight spaces? No problem. Narrow lanes? No problem. Definitely a great buy as a second car or a first car for anyone.

Don't only use mine as a city car. Top of the line in Aust so no hybrid, but gets 5 km/100l even on long freeway drives at 110 kph, and the seats are comfortable, same colour, looks like a shrunken bushmaster. Really appreciate limiter and cruise control. Have to do the run Sydney - Canberra often. limiter to Mittagong then cruise control to Canberra. Not bad on mountain roads either, enough power and roll is not much if you are carrying luggage. Runs rough on 91 but smooth on E10, 94. Great car.

I have one - months now. This is a very honest review. My Ignis is a delight to drive - mainly being small and light - but is absolutely just as good on the long run to Truro where my Daughter lives as the bigger, thirstyer, Vitara we had before. And its big enough for three adults and a weekends luggage. 4 would be - interesting - but we don't have 4... Most of the time close to 60 mpg in real life motoring. On the long motorway trip 54 mpg without going slowly.

Incredible I've had 3 small Suzuki's as a second car since 1996 with the latest being a Suzuki Celerio purchase new late 2015. These cars are incredibly reliable, incredibly cheap to run and seem to last forever even when treated as a functional tool with little live. They were incredibly cheap to buy and journalists never reported them for what we're with semi bad reviews! Move forward to 2023, the price has rocketed, the build and all the goodness about them is as always been and a journalist says how marvelous they are! Seems the lesson from journalists to Suzuki is bang up your prices and we will sing the praises!

I have a Citroën C1. I don't love it, but it's all the car I actually need. I question whether someone who drives, say, a Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, really needs all that much car or, if by buying a huge electric car, are really doing anything "planet-friendly" either. I don't think my conscience would allow me to drive around in something so grossly unnecessary. A Suzuki Ignis driver, on the other hand, has my respect.

spoken like a poor person. These small cars do more damage than you wish to accept. These are made Cheap, made to be cheap - now go and try making something that is cheaper than the rest of the cheap alternative in the market. You will very quickly find out how dangerous this "cheap product" mentality is. They have it they can buy an EQS, you can't. Don't bring your conscience into this. you surely have things that most people in the world can't afford, Where did that conscience go when buying those things ?

@@f.c.2475 do more damage to what? And we're only talking relative to big cars here. That was kinda the focus of this video. If you have some general hatred of small cars, why did you watch the video? Anyway, cars - and other things - that are designed to be cheap, are better than cars not designed to be cheap but made cheap. Compare, say, the Aygo/C1/107 with some Eastern Bloc car from the 1990s. Both cheap, not both good. I remember Top Gear's review of the Aygo - they pointed out the cost-cutting (not "corner-cutting") measures taken to make it a cheap car, but not a bad one. E.g., single front wiper, single tailgate strut, pop-out rear windows, no redundant electronics, etc. That's what makes a good small car, not a lack of investment in passive safety or production tolerances like those Eastern Bloc cars.
@f.c.2475

@@joshbrailsford nice of you to assume that I have a general hatred for small cars. Small cars that are well designed does not include cars like Ignis. Minis are small, Alfa Mito is small, Fiat 500 is small. These have some standards, way more than ignis or such cars can claim. So, yes cars like Ignis are just made to fill the roads "each house with a car". No need. And I also commented on your Pure-Consciousness. Would like a response on that too, since you must be a really good person. And one more thing about that "planet friendly", if EQS doesn't do anything friendly ? But there's only few EQS, ignis might be "eco friendly" in your mind, but there 100s of ignis for every EQS. Rendering your claim hollow.

I have owned one for almost two years and I love it (previously had a BMW 3 series van and VW Golf). I drive mostly on very twisty mountainous roads, sometimes a bit of mild offroad. I love the looks, it has character, and reminds me of suzuki Jimny, Fiat Panda and other iconic fun cars with no nonsense that become classics. Also considered the Dacia Sandero, a brilliant car, but more expensive. It is small but I can fit 2 large surfboards inside or my road bicycle with rear seats folded. The fact it's very light and has thinner wheels makes it very fun to drive. I didn't know about this car, but when I saw one I was instantly sold on it. Sometimes I do longer trips on highways (once a month) and that is the only occasion where its shortcomings are obvious. It does the job and is fuel efficient tough.

The problem with cars today is that people expect all cars to be built to the same spec as a 'luxury' car. 20 years ago a Corsa or Fiesta was filled with 'scratchy plastics' and nobody complained. The other issue is that a car with 'scratchy plastics' back then was less than £10K now it's double that, so I guess people better quality for the higher price.

This is where driving should be going. Small, simple practical and low environmental impact. To influence the future of driving, discourage people from cruising around in vast SUVs with a smug grin on their face. Driving should be done with the least impact. Why does one person need a 2.5-3 tonnes behemoth to go to the shops/pick up the kids/commute? This car can hit 70mph, so why hundreds and hundreds of bhp in most cars? They don't offer anything over what this can. If one has any morals, this is the car to buy. Don't make cars an expensive delight to drive, make it a bit more basic and people will drive for necessity, not excess. Great message, great car. Also Suzuki produces cars that in another universe would be considered prestige, ie they are reliable. BMW and Mercedes also Range Rover are disastrously unreliable, like an old FIAT, so why are they prestige? History, from when they were actually good, and a bit of leather and wood (how original).

Our family has 3 members, so we didn't wanted something big, a small car is more than enough for us. So I started looking up small cars and this Ignis was definitely on the list as the potential winner. Eventually we bought a Mazda 2. In my humble opinion, it's the best small car money can buy. It costs only a few thousands euro more than the Ignis, but the quality increase is absolutely worth it. We are extremely satisfied with this Mazda 2, it's quiet, it's comfortable, even in winter it eats only 5,6 liter/100 km, the 90 HP is more than enough for everything. I've looked up other small cars too but nothing comes close to this, even though that other cars costs more. This Ignis is still a great car, it's just my opinion about the topic.

i couldn't tell, was that an auto or 6M? Would never buy an engine that small with an auto, but with a manual this must be a blast.

It‘s a honest, tiny and affordable car. Hard plastic inside, not to much „trainee systems“, agile and reliable.. Just great.

No reviewers ever mention that there is room for a spare wheel. It was a basic requirement when I went looking for a new small economic car. They always mention the 0-60 time even though you are never likely to go from a standstill to 60mph if you are in the market for such a car.

There is a spare wheel boot under the luggage boot itself . Such a clever one too

Actually the car us economically challenged Brits need is not the £16k 50mpg Suzuki Ignis but the £8k, 70mpg Suzuki Celerio. I've driven the car for a couple of months in South Africa where they come with Brit-friendly right-hand drive. The range starts at R183,900. The car screams 'budget & basic' but as the nation regresses back to the 1970s, maybe it will fit right in!

In the middle of fighting with the local Suzuki dealer about the hybrid performance....as in it doesn't work. According to the dealer, if the oil temp isn't warm enough the hybrid won't kick in and help. 40 min drive yesterday to the dealer....still didn't work, they stated it wasn't warmed up enough (it was right at 0c). Service got it going for the trip back....later that day, still won't work. By their way of thinking, the Ignis, which is a city car and really needs that hybrid to help out, won't help out unless the weather is warm? I like the car if the hybrid is working, but will be looking to sell a 2.5 month old car if the hybrid portion is worthless. It worked fine in November when we picked it up.....

Hi Nicola, Great review, Umm... the Ignis, it's not a bad car, never really driven one, my sister has, and she didn't mind it. Was a car hire anyway, I prefer the more grown up Suzuki Swift, I had the previous generation 1.2L engine and I loved it, to me its a very capable car, probably won't do very well on the UK motorway, the Swift sport will do better there, however let's be honest, I live on an island, in the middle of the Indian Ocean, Paradise on Earth, narrow roads and it's just perfect,

My SV5 does around 65mpg. £35 to fill the tank and you get around 350/370 miles before the next refill.

Très bon véhicule, agile en ville et très pratique en région de montagne. En apprenant à bien doser la pédale d’accélérateur, la Suzuki Ignis hybride consomme très peu de carburant.

Recently got one in October. Very zippy car . Zip zap through anywhere without headache. 182 km/pH is max speed though i won't recommend. Just touched for 2 seconds. You can easily maintain 90-100 km on highway. Space is surprisingly adequate.
