NZ RELEASE DATE: March 1, 2012 OFFICIAL BLOG: weneedtotalkaboutkevin.wordpre...
OFFICIAL WEBSITE: www.hopscotchfilms.com.au/film...
An exquisitely realized adaptation of Lionel Shriver's bestselling novel, We Need To Talk About Kevin, the film was a critics and audience favourite following its competition screenings at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. Tilda Swinton turns in a stunning and breathtakingly fragile performance as Eva, a concerned mother with a troubled, angry son - Kevin. Eva is a haunted middle-aged woman trying to grapple with her own feelings towards her son as he grows up to be a brooding teenager, and his unthinkable actions will shatter her life. What was her role in it? Did she resent her son since birth? What could she have done to help him?
This is a fearless film that will provoke and enthral audiences in equal measure, raising questions of guilt, regret and loss. At the heart of the story is an eerie portrait of the idea of nature vs nurture, and a bold look at the alienation of parenthood. Chilling but absolutely captivating, We Need To Talk Kevin is directed by visionary filmmaker Lynne Ramsay (Morvern Callar, Ratcatcher), who constructs a mesmerizing, intimate piece of cinema.

@Carter Swinton A psychopath doesn't have to turn out totally evil is taught right. They are often found to become doctors. There was one incident when a psychology professor found out he is a psychopath while teaching students about psychopathy. Obviously we are still researching the cluster Bs here so let's not get ahead of ourselves.

I think this scene was meant to represent Kevin eating his sister' eye. The way he bites the fruit has everything to do with the incident his sister went through, as if he was blowing her eye with his angry teeth.

I dont know why people give this movie such a bad rep! Yes I understand that the progression of the story is a little weird with the switching back and forth from past to present but its scenes like this that show the talents of the actors. Ezra delivers a convincing performance into the mind of a psychopath. He puts himself in this facade of being normal for his parents but his actions and subtleties show how truly messed up he is. Its really brilliant

If this scene doesn't make you despise Kevin's character (with his lack of basic human emotion plus lack of empathy for his own family, complete disregard for the harm he's caused) I don't know what will. One thing is just to take the look of the character, out of context, and find him attractive (if the attention is solely on the physical attributes of the actor, that's a whole other thing) but within the context of the movie and the character that's being portrayed on the screen, any sensible human would be infuriated by this kind of behavior, even more so because the injustice of the whole situation; the psychopath gets no penalty for his actions because of the dysfunctional parenting; the mother not having enough backbone to stand up to her son properly and the dad's lack of knowing how to properly show authority as a father.

Yep, and those girls or women who say "something might be wrong with me cause I really like him" are just trying to be rebels, or because it's a beautiful actor in this role, want to imagine the type of pretty bad boy fantasy in their heads because they never experienced real trauma before (i.e. experiencing real cold heartedness that this character possesses, and if the roles were reversed, and if this guy did such a thing to their baby sister, then they wouldn't be so blinded by the beauty of the character, but would be kicked in the face by reality as to what REAL CRUELTY looks like), and this lack of real experience with trauma and seeing trauma allows these "girls" to say stupid shit like "something is wrong wrong me cause I like him." There's nothing wrong with you, you just happened to have the privilege of growing up in a way that you are sheltered from seeing what abuse looks like, from seeing what domestic abuse can look like, or from seeing a loved one cry for their mommas you see life slip from their eyes and not being able to do anything about it but to pray that everything will be OK. If this was the case, everyone would be disgusted with his behavior regardless of what he looks like. OR, if they chose an ugly actor, then everyone would be like, "damn this guy is cruel, I would do something to him if I ever saw him do something like that irl." Or something along those lines. Movie directors really know how to attract these sort of audience members to watch their movies because they are so easily manipulative in this marketable sense, but this is aside from the point that it's probably A REALLY GOOD MOVIE but I haven't seen it yet.....I hope I eventually get to watch it....looks crazy! Oh and I forget to say that, I'm also aware that there are those who don't really like the guy, but are really psychopathic and are attracted to the acts themselves, and enable them to like the person behind the cruelty. And then there are those who are easily infatuated by beauty, enough that it blinds them and clouds their judgment, and either end up in fucked up abusive relationships, or end up seeing their man involved in murder but continue to justify that he is enjoyment, even though their is so much evidence in support of his guilt. I say "he" because we are talking about a male actor and the ignorant infatuation that is associated with the ignorant groupie statements of "something wrong with me cause I still really like him and feel sorry for him," eventhough it there is really nothing wrong with it because the movie directors already know that this is one of the responses they are expecting from the viewer (otherwise 5hey would have picked a less attractive actor for the role) so women, your reaction isn't bad, it's manufactured and EXPECTED. But again, I keep saying "he," but this just as easily applies to us MEN when it comes to infatuation with a woman's beauty, and if it was the same movie, but a female actor instead, all us men, usually for comedic purposes, would be saying dumb crap like "somethings wrong with me cause I still really like her, I would help her if I could." Or "She can shoot me in 5he eye any time of the day." Or "I wish I could be stalked by a beautiful woman like that." Lol. All in all, I just think it's funny when girls say "something s wrong wrong me cause I like him and feel sorry for him," and are sort of serious about it, I think it's stupid, and they don't realize how VERY COMMON AND NORMAL their responses are, and how MANUFACTURED this reaction is by the movie directors thems3lves....sometimes they try and achieve these conflicting feelings of infatuation, and repulsion because of the physical beauty vs. the cruelty of the behavior. Its funny because it makes those girls feel like theybare some sort of "anime love quarrel rebel," without realizing how CONFORMING this reaction is.

@@low-keygneiss63 I understand what u wrote in the comment. I have watched the film twice and all in all I have felt the character of "Kevin" to be portrayed real well. I do think that it takes a lot to perform as a psychopathic character in a film and I do think Ezra succeeded on that part. That makes him attractive for me. Again I am not a woman. I have been bi all my life and have never looked upto any man or woman who are cold hearted and ruthless in behaviour. I have always despised Kevin in the movie as of of his behaviour. But, the fact that he could pull this off so well makes it attractive to me. I understand that directors choose beautiful or charming characters for films like this to get more audience. But there's also an understanding that most psychopaths are meant to be charming. If u look at the big examples like, Ted Bundy, Richard Ramirez, Charles Manson, Eric Harris etc. All these were excessively charming men but they never came out to be much of as an attractive or handsome to majority of the ppl because of their deeds. Understanding that a person who murders ppl, kills animals, harms others is simply not attractive is a basic human decency. It has got nothing to do with how much trauma one has experienced. It's basic empathy for the victims that were targetted by those same "attractive" psychopaths. On contrast, if someone actually looks up to such psychopaths bcs they are attractive and irrespective of their crime records. Then those ppl are just weird humans with no social empathy or judgement. The reason why a lot of ppl are looking upto Ezra as Kevin in this film is bcs most of us know that all this killing ppl and being a psychopath never happened irl and that Ezra as in Kevin never murdered anyone irl and all this character portrayal was just sheerly for a movie. If it were a real life thing and if Kevin was a murderer irl, in real news then I bet most of the ppl would not find him attractive and would only feel sorry for the victims. Again it's not that deep, he's just a character, ppl found him attractive on how he ACTED in the film bcs all of us know he's not a real life psychopath and he never killed ppl. And that's why he was found attractive by many in the movie. *It has got nothing to do with trauma*

Neither the book nor the movie say exactly what happened per se, and in the book the mother does show physical aggression though this is to no avail just like in real life there's little to no reasoning with these people. In the book Kevin actually toys with his fathers mind to get what he needs out of him, in the end he would probably act the way you desire him to act only to mislead you. Best thing for you to do would be to turn someone like him to the state, you could beat his ass if you wanted to, tho I urge if you know anybody with children like this to not take matters into their own hands and to simply report them. Had the mother handed him to the state those kids wouldn't have been killed at the school. Ironically there are so many parents like these in this movie, which is really sad honestly.

Nah, people like Kevin actually know what responsibility is, there's a misconception that psychopaths don't understand morality when in fact they do which is what makes them scarier and is what truly solidifies them as evil. My psychology teacher once said to display emotions vs. not having them are two different things. To put it in a way you'll see it better would be like someone causing physical pain because they know it hurts, in this scenario Kevin is toying with responsibility because he knows it drives his parents mad and he knows of their expectations, the fact that he knows his responsibilities is the direct awareness that leads to why he does not abide by them... Simply put, he pretends to not understand to manipulate others.

I’m late to the party but whatever. Eva and Kevin are very alike, very much so mother and son. Kevin is very obviously violent, while Eva’s violent is very subtle but still shown (she broke his arm as a kid, and her outburst when he trashed her room - I imagine there were more moments in Kevin’s childhood we didn’t see where he managed to drive her to being violent either towards him or in general). His manipulation is obvious, her is also subtle (so much so I really can’t name any Eva manipulative from the movie). Eva’s kindness and compassion is natural with others but very obviously forced for Kevin, Kevin’s kindness and compassion is extremely subtle and usually has a twisted way anyway (lying to protect his mother ((manipulation)), not killing his mother ((the bare minimum and also manipulation)), his relationship with his father, his random kind moments with his sister). You can argue some of these don’t count since it wasn’t real or genuine kindness. But Eva and Kevin are still very similar but they clearly went completely different paths. Someone else commented on here about nature vs nurture, I agree with some of the point they made but not all. I think Kevin and Eva were both born psychopath so it’s their nature, however Eva’s parents managed to nurture her in away so it wasn’t so obvious. That she could learn kindness and compassion and suppress her violence. However, due to her nature, she was unable to raise Kevin the same when he was born psychopathic. It’s also to note that sometimes some people are just born unredeemable, Kevin definitely was and there was no helping him. Franklin p!ssed me off all throughout the movie with his inability to see Kevin’s problems or listen to Eva when she was telling him there was a problem. However I kind of think now that even if he did and the doctors did, Kevin was just outreach, he was always going to commit mass murder in my opinion. I also think that Kevin is well aware he’s a lot like his mother. He even says it once as a teenager when they are out mini golfing. I think it’s the reason she’s the only one he didn’t kill. He sees her as his equal and his own twisted way, loves his mother. I also think Kevin has an obsession with pain, both giving and receiving it. He loves it, and he loves his mother so he wanted to give her the greatest gift of all: the most amount of pain in the World that would follow her until she leaves this World. *EDIT:* It’s also debatable that Kevin wasn’t born a psychopath, but instead quickly became one because he never felt loved from his mother. Ezra said in an interview that he sympathises with both Kevin and Eva, Kevin because he was immediately disliked by his mother (because Eva at that point wasn’t ready to be a mother and unconsciously blamed and resented Kevin for that, even though it was something Franklin kinda forced her into) and Eva also because she was forced into becoming a mother and had no support system to turn to when she wasn’t bonding with her first child (Franklin is useless and dismissive and society kinda just expects mothers to have no issues bonding with their child), which I imagine both to be incredibly painful.
@jennyclark6183
@jennyclark6183 Жыл бұрын
I don't think Eva was violent or psychotic at all. She was angry when she broke his arm and justifiably so, but she didn't MEAN to break his arm. Her only mistake here is that she had never busted his little butt so he knew he could not get away with just dumping in his diaper . Her anger when he messed up her newly decorated room was also natural and justified. This is why I believe in spanking. If a kid knows early on that they will be immediately punished when they do things like this they DON'T DO THEM. This kid was the way he was because they taught him that he could be a little sh-t and never be punished.

I'd say the primary part here is Kevin's not understanding that his parents think he'd feel responsible. Psychopaths never do. It wouldn't even occur to him as that's not in his psyche, and he's making that clear to his parents. Stupid dad doesn't get it..
@walkingcorpse1224
@walkingcorpse1224 Жыл бұрын
Kevin understands completely. I'm not entirely sure where you got this idea that Psychopaths do not or are incapable of understanding responsibility, awareness, morality, the truth is that they fully do which is what makes them even scarier, I've seen several videos of killers and people who have talked to them and investigated them at this point have concluded that they're fully aware and that stuff like demons, visions, voices etc... Are usually ways to make excuses for them a sort of way to manipulate others into feeling sorry for them or fooling them into believing that they don't understand or are simply misunderstood. The method they use is the same method many abusers use on women and children, and because I'm going to be working in a prison it's very important for me to know that these inmates are actually all very much sound of mind, they do in fact know the difference between right and wrong which is what makes them evil people. For you to say they don't understand makes it so that they're not evil, to understand others feelings is the entire reason why he's so cruel to them why he plays with them. In fact if you read the book Kevin chose some of his victims based on understanding them and he tortured his sister based on jealousy because she is the exact opposite of him and even chose the timing correctly not only because of his age but also because his parents were talking about divorce which incidentally would mean an escape for his mother whom he had a pleasure with torturing throughout the whole story.

I used to hate lychees until I chose to recreate this scene in film class and I had to watch it over and over and over again to create a shot list and a storyboard, and he made them look so sexy that I started to warm up to the idea of having to eat them for a whole day, but I couldn't find fresh ones because it was off season so I had to use canned lychees. And it was so disgusting I remember washing them to get the syrup off. This scene was so hard to shoot that I had to eat like 15 of those by the end of the day, and by the time we had the entire thing on camera, I was addicted to them. I didn't even notice that I started eating them while talking to my teacher between shots. Now all I want is a box of these and an orange juice. Smart choice watching this scene two months before the season starts. Great.

Kevin is a psychopath who has spent his entire life tormenting his mother but manipulates his father by acting completely polite and loving towards him so the dad sees nothing wrong. Kevin eventually gets a little sister whom he hates, one incident where Kevin was meant to be watching her, led to his little sister losing her eye, possibly directly because of Kevin. When his parents decide to get a divorce and he sees he won't be able to manipulate their stress to get what he wants, he locks many of his classmates in the gym and murders them with a bow and arrow.

Empathy means you can put yourself in the other person's place, that is, you can imagine what they feel. I think psychos CAN imagine that the victim is suffering. That's why they enjoy doing it. For people like Kevin, the "Good Days" are pure manipulation. They could be a genuine enjoyment of the day, and no inclination to do any harm or mischief at the time, but that's their personal perogative. There's no actual affection there. Some days are simply to keep their family or friends on edge, doubting themselves.
