A build for the Mammoth Sniper Challenge would be a great build idea. Always a challenge between going super light versus heavier like a PRS rifle. Heavier is more stable but also requires you to ruck with it for 30+ miles and three days. I ran a heavy PRS rig this year but looking to find a way to shave some pounds (carbon fiber barrel, etc).
@andrewmconrad6 ай бұрын
I second this. I'm building a gas rifle for Mammoth in April. I have a 24" carbon fiber barrel. I should have it together in the next week or so and can't wait to get it on the scale.

third on this, with Mammoth as well as some other matches there is an interesting twist, the primary is open but secondary is caliber restricted to .223 or .308, for Mammoth it can be a bolt gun or carbine. I ballistic matched my .223 bolt to my partner's 6 dasher, which worked well as we only had to use one set of drops. As NRL hunter is showing, the 12lb carbon barrel guns seem to shoot just as well in the field as the 16 pound steel barrel guns.

I'd like to see your take on a perfect sub 12 pound NRL hunter rig. Something that could be used in a real life hunting scenario. I just finished building mine this fall and took my first deer with it, shooting off my tripod! Can't wait to compete next season... and also see what you'll come up with! Cheers!

Ultralight sheep hunt in Alaska. Something light for up to 100miles of hiking through mountains in 7-10 days (let’s say 8 pounds or less including optic and all attached accessories), compact with a small footprint when strapped to a backpack to avoid being snagged by alders when bushwhacking and excellent terminal performance out to 600 yards with manageable recoil.

Rimfire build for sure! With the space that most Americans have access to a Rimfire build trainer and medium size game center fire rifle. That is a use that hits a broad market and affordable to the masses.

NRL Hunter, specifically Open Light Class. Preferably something that uses a non carbon fiber barrel but can still use the MDT triple pull Cyke pod. So under 12 lbs, power factor over 380,000 (bullet grain x velocity).

I'll second one of the comments below for a 223 trainer/varmint gun, which happens to apply to me. Being a young adult with a new family 33 years ago, all I was able to afford was a used Savage, a cheap Simmons scope, and the most basic of reloading gear... but damn, I still got that thing to shoot. It's finally time to replace the old girl, and I still love shooting 223, so I want to stick with that as a replacement... I'd love to see what you'd do.

Back pack elk hunt, 2-6 miles from a road. Bullet needs to be going at least 2000 fps on impact at 800 yards. Bullet needs to have a KE of at least 1500 ft/lbs of energy on impact at 800 yards. Rifle needs to be less than 10 lbs. Need to be able to spot my shots. Definitely needs to have a suppressor. Shorter is better for backpacking. 18” barrel maybe. What would you guys do?

Ok this one is a bit off the wall, but a 5.7x28 bolt gun. The purpose would be as a full start to finish trainer for young ones. They would be able to reload for it, learn the load development process without being super costly, (at 4-6gr of powder per charge 1# would give them well over 1k rounds) but also be something that would be useful for varmints and what not while they are learning both the hunting AND precision rifle world. Right now the only way I've find that i would be able to do this is to buy a bolt and or action from PTG as they are the only ones that offer a 5.7 bolt face. Magazines would also be tricky but there are a few options. This would be a rifle that's for ages 4-8ish, but also one that they could have for there entire life as a plinking/ varmint gun. A rem 700 footprint would be ideal but not entirely necessary.

A clean smooth rifle for hunting, Weather resistant, with a be big enough caliber for big game, but at the same time decently short barrel (18-20"?) , that can be accurately reloaded at home with standard equipment (with the right dies), light enough to carry for a full day of hunting, stiff enough to not give to much recoil as you might need a quick follow up shot. LVPO maybe for hunting close and longer range. A quite silent safety, maybe even a 3 step one (safe, safe but you can work the bolt, and fire) , not to bulky mag and/or stock to not get stuck in foliage. I use my hunting rifles for both Driven and Stalk hunts, and need to trust them to 110% so that I know that as long as I do everything right, it will do its job.

The rifle I'm trying to build and I think could be an interesting build for yall is the following: A quick change barrel action that's rides in a chassis with a scope that is light enough to do nrl hunter heavy with a light profile/carbon fiber barrel in a 6.5 prc or creedmoor. Then with the change of a barrel (and possibly bolt face) get swapped to a prs rig with minimal adding of weights to tune balance. While the tertiary use being a gun you wouldn't actually mind hunting with in everything short of a high altitude mountain goat hunt.

Curtis Custom Valor switch barrel short action plus the 22lr conversion kit. Three barrels a 6GT barrel for PRS with largest 3/4 thread for brake, 22lr barrel for PRS no tuner, & 300 WSM Carbon fiber barrel for hunting. A MDT Hunter 26 chassis compete and hunt with all three barrels. Leopold Mark 5 scope 5-25. You choose the brake and scope rings. Balance 6GT & 22lr barrel length and weight to the gun so gun it’s balanced on bags. Wonder if switch barrel screws are accessible with Hunter 26 stock and if 22lr mags will be reliable with this stock. If stock won’t work use a MPA Matrix Pro for the 6GT/22lR conversion barrels

How about a Rifle with an action that accepts profit barrels and interchangeable bolt faces. Build a single rifle with 2 barrels. One heavy barrel and cartridge for PRS, mid range, or long range FTR/ F class. Doesn't have to be a top competition gun. Just something the average Joe could use to have fun. Light barrel for nrl heavy weight division. Keep the cost below $4500 for rifle, barrels, scope, and rings. Personally I have built a few rifles that exceed this dollar amount by a lot. When at the range I constantly get comments from people, "I would love to try it, but I don't want to spend $8-10k on a rifle." Build a rifle that is not over the top expensive that gives some a chance to have fair success and try their rifle in different events to see what they like without breaking the bank.
