Apparently the warm places make your sanity go up, like being near lava or a campfire. It also seem that the furnace also makes your sanity to increase.

Yeah seeing them not putting down torches was so annoying. You would think they would at some point get the idea to place torches. Also, they obviously noticed killing animals and being in the dark lowers their sanity and yet they continue to do those things or ignore it completely. It feels like they don't care, and not in a good way.
