I have one of these too. I also had focus mishaps but nothing too bad. I wouldn't rely on it for pro or time lapse issues either. Kind of good for quick shots though. I tried this with the 200-600 Sony on a Nikon Z7 in AFC. It works as much as you would expect for an adapted lens.

Great review! I think another appeal is the fact that it is a really small adapter (compared to FTZ or the Canon EF to Z adapters) and you could potentially mount the cheaper Sigma lenses for Sony.

This adapter is the only reason I bought Z6. I have a lot of FE lenses. When I saw Jim Kasson's blog, where he tested loxia 21mm on z6,it works as well if not better. I immediately bought this camera and the adapter. I had many adapters for Sony, ie Sigma mc11, leica to sony. even commlite nikon to sony. With the exception of commlite, all adapters work fine. Sony lenses work very well, sometimes they misbehave but mostly it is perfectly fine. Same with Sigma MC11 adapter. It works as if on a Sony body. With leica lenses though I had to move the lens a bit off axis to trick the camera, otherwise shutter won't fire. These nikon z's are swiss army knife of cameras. I probably won't go back to sony body.

I have the Sony A9 and the Nikon Z7. I had pre-ordered the Techart TZE-01 and also purchased the Commlite CM-ENF-E1 Pro F to E Mount Adapter to be able to put my F mount lenses on my Sony. Best of both worlds, not having to buy similar glass from each mfg'r. I mostly use the A9 for birding with my 100-400mm GM & 1.4TC. I have no other Sony glass. The Commlite allows me to use my current F mount lenses on the Sony if I need to like the 24-70 or 70-200. Also, when I sold my D500, I also sold my 200-500. This setup allows me to put the 100-400 on my Z7 to have a long lens. May not be as fast but works.

I have lots of Sony and Nikon bodies and lenses. When I bought the Z7, I bought the Techart adapter shortly afterwards. For the most part, it works fine, but I'm not very demanding since I don't tend to shoot things that require super-fast AF. However, the Techart is close, but it's not quite ready for prime-time. On my Sony e-mount Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, it's not uncommon to have pulsing before the AF decides to quit. It happens maybe a quarter to a third of the time especially on very close focus. Techart has updated the firmware at least once and I haven't done a thorough re-test, but I know the pulsing is still there. Whether or not it is as often remains to be seen.

Now you need to get the Techart Sony to M mount adapter that autofocuses m mount lenses. This will join with the adapter you have and now you can autofocus Leica, Voictlander, Zeiss, Canon, Minolta on your Nikon. It even works pretty well.

Thanks for this review. But I am a bit curios about this manual focus thing. Does that mean that even when the camera is switched to manual focus (lets say for astrophotography) the lens ranadomly tries to focus automatically???? So in practice I have to check EVERY picture to see if focus is correct?!? That would definately be a dealbreaker as I have to rely on my manual focus setting... I am considering attaching the Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 lens to a Nikon Z6ii...

wow, that's pretty amazing. Seems like any lens can theoretically be put onto the nikon since nikon has the smallest flange distance. Pretty cool to know Nikon bodies are the most versatile. I didn't think the flange distance is different enough to make an adapter for.

I bought this same adapter hoping I could use my APSC lenses on the Z50 but I didn't read the fine print that it only works on Nikon Full Frame Z mount cameras. So I put my Z5 and Z6ii in DX mode and it was sharp also the auto focus was excellent. Too good in fact because I could see every wrinkle and blemish's plus old age beauty marks so I went back with the Z lenses that I own to get a creamier, smoother, awesome looking guy to be more presentable and not try to scare anyone away. But I am wanting to buy some new Sony lenses that are coming out soon to try them on the Nikon's.

Hi, just a point. I am a Nikon Z9 user and I love Sony gm lenses, not the cameras! I have several GM lenses and I use the Megadaptor Z21 and Z21 pro. No issues. They perform as well as Nikon Z lenses with this mount. Fast, sharp, programmable buttons. I love the aperture ring too, as Nikon seem to leave it to a none clickable ring that works but not as good. Megadapt do continued updates to firmware and these are all now available via the camera. Please consider. TonyH

Great review. I have been trying out the. Sony 90mm f2.8 lens. It pulses unless I take the camera out of face detection and put it into single point auto focus. It’s weird cause at f2.8 it pulses a lot, but at f4 it works pretty great. My z6 is at firmware 2.20 and the firmware for the adapter now is at 2.00 ....hoping to use this lens cause it’s so sharp. But I’m just not convinced yet. I give it a 6/10

For videography, Please could anyone help me I'm looking for an adapter to use sigma 18-35mm f1.8 nikon fit that I want to use on Canon 80d but the thing is I want to have the capability to use the auto focus and also the usual face tracking mode and other types of tracking that the 80D has. I'm not sure if this adapter or other will give me that capability. Question about the chip if the adapter has it. The camera will recognise the lens while having the adapter already mounted, will the chip also allow the auto focus to be used?

I have a Nikon Z8 and both adapters. The Techart was bought about a year ago (2023) the Megadap bought recently. Neither adapter works properly with the firmware 2.0 of the Nikon Z8. Prior to the firmware 2.0, the Techart adapter would power the Sony 16-35 pz lens properly while the Megadap does not. The Megadap bobbles a bit while attempting focus. The Techart WAS faster and more accurate. The Techart adapter does not fit as perfectly, with some wiggle and it is impossible to take off a Sony lens and leave the adapter on the Nikon body. While the Megadap does offer a better release button for doing this. Final note, NEITHER adapter work properly with the firmware 2.0 of the Z8. Megadap indicated they might have a firmware update in March 2024. Techart has NOT responded to my queries.

Cool review. At 7:40 she asks if it's a slower shutter speed changing the sound. The guy answers no but you can see the shutter speed moved from 1/160 at f2.8 to 1/80 at f8. Maybe it was the shutter speed?
@scraymond5597
@scraymond5597 4 жыл бұрын
Going from 1/160 to 1/80 would not cause any perceivable delay in the shutter action (I've verified this on the Nikon lens). Our conclusion is that the adapted lens takes longer to close down the aperture to f8.

This was a good and informative video! With regards to the autofocus during manual focus, I feel that the z bodies may have something to do with it. Currently I have a z6 and often shoot manual with my 50mm 1.4. I learned that the switch for auto and manual doesn't always work; with z6 still trying to autofocus. Granted it could be my very aged 50 1.4. I learned that setting the body to MF seems to stop the random autofocus even when the switch is on M on the lens
@stanspb763
@stanspb763 4 жыл бұрын
The switch contacts in the lens might need deoxidizing. The problem with not switch due to the body is not something others have reported. If the lenses has been sitting a long time without the switch being used, as with all non-vacuum switches, oxide builds up and eventually becomes thick enough to interrupt the current flow. An oxide of a metal is an insulator and is very useful in electronics, ICs and transistors for example work because of this trait, as well has high capacitance capacitors require oxide of aluminum to be a very good insulator to work. If you have access to the switch (exterior mounting screws possibly) a minute amount of a de-oxidizing liquid can return good conductivity quickly. If you ever turn a volume or treble control on an old stereo and it made a scratchy noise through the speaker, that is the cause and can be resolved very quickly with deoxidizer.

Extremely useful and pleasant review! You don't mention the typical price difference between Nikon Z and all brands E-mount lenses. For people on a budget this makes the adapter an even more compelling choice. I've got the original Sony A 7 with the lightweight 24mm Samyang - an awesome combo for walking around and long hikes. As I got this FF body for like 650 €=USD and the lens is under 250 USD = awesome image quality @ a low budget. No need to adapt to anything. However on my Z50 it would make a pleasant and even more discreet ca. 35mm equivalent. Also bought the A7II with the Sony 1.8 85mm - great disappointment. The focus does not work as smooth and snappy as Nikon DSLRs with Nikon D glass would. And I am totally into the retro look of my Ds and somehow appalled by the sterile perfection of recent lens design. Don't want the imperfections of my friends skin documented in painful detail! On top, many of my personal best memories are travelling shots when I take consenting people to a matching setting. When I take the Nikon out, it starts up instantly and takes the shot in no time. The Sony takes it startup time with blank viewfinder. Ever again in cold weather the battery is flat! People these days are impatient and the shot is bound to loose energy when they have to wait for the camera to take its choices. Funnily just last week on a day in Milan mostly spent in museums I got nice street shots and the consent of 4 cool kids to post their image on instagram. These jewels of memories might have lost much on the Sony. On top there is the short list of Sony faults , mostly - dust on sensor - overcomplicated intransparent menus Sony cameras tendency to attract dust even without changing lenses is a nuissance for landscape shots, not so much for spontaneous travel memories. If I simply want to change ISO or something, it takes real time. On all my Nikons its a matter between thumb and fingers, consistently done in no time. Using different systems, so personalizing the Fn buttons will not help me much. Where again was the ISO. Better make my slow way through the "quick" menu. What a delight to change AF settings on Nikons!

Allow me to elaborate - the lag is introduced at smaller (narrower) apertures. This is prior to capture and completely independent of shutter speed.

First hand user experience here. Interestingly, Nikon's different z mount bodies react to this adapter differently. My Z5 being the entry/toy around body, only works with anything less than telephoto. I would assume, if you use an adapter, you're mostly interested in the E mount primes since that is what the Z system really lacks as of now, especially the 1.4s and the mid-telephoto primes etc. You wouldn't want to just adapt the zooms since the Z mount 2.8 are really better lens than the GM zooms in many intangible aspects. Now the real bum is my 135GM is not working well with the adapter, even though it is one of THE main reason why I'd be interested in this adapter. It just jitters on my Z7II even after acquired focus and I would totally not trust the auto focus with that lens. It also wouldn't work at all on my Z5. I would definitely welcome opposite scenarios from users of the same adapter since I really want to have that lens working on my Nikon bodies. I havn't update the adapter since I bought it quite recently. I also didn't check if I ever need to update the 135GM lens firmware. But I'd rather want to know those might help solve the problem. My batis 85 would totally not work with my Z5. I havn't test the 85 DG DN from sigma, since Sigma and tamron are supposed to offer these newly designed primes on Z and RF mount SOOOOON(like a really long soon). The only good news is anything wide than 50mm seems working just fine. 24GM and 50 1.4ZA, batis 40, mostly works just ok. Another bum is this adapter is totally not the best bayonet mount I've touched. It has some play and room to turn further even when you attached your lens. And worst still, sometimes this results in loss of communication to the lens. I once had my batis 85 really dark and black out almost as if I didn't take the caps off, and thru some twist and wiggle it somehow manages to resume connection and came back to life. (edit on 23rd Apr after further testing. 50 1.4ZA seems to work but in fact its giving more problems. Most of these lenses, 50 1.4ZA, 135GM and etc, would worst case still function with AF-S mode since on AF-C it would keep jittering if you dont let go your AF button. However just when you think you acquired you focus with a green box(same as manual with all the peaking lighted up.) you maybe check your shot and find it actually not really focused. 135GM seems to work under only AF-S mode. This just make the trustworthyness of this piece of gear way lower than before. I would strongly recommend people to not to believe this is a saver. It is not, at the most least not yet. The most reliable way to use this adapter is only manual focus and sometimes you may even have to turn off manual focus peaking indicator to get an idea whether things are sharp enough cause the camera sometimes mislead you with the peaking.) My overall user experience with this adapter is a mixed bag. I'm largely ok with most of it since I don't have much demand for speed with photography. (most of my shots are slow moving and stationary objects.) So I'm ok that I sacrifice even further on speed to have many of the best primes in mirrorless camera industry today. Many of those GM primes and batis primes are going to be fantastic combo if they work on the Z bodies since Nikon probably won't release mirrorless counterparts for those any sooner. This is not to say the 1.8 primes from Nikon are no good. It's just that for E mount you have things like 1.4s for low light, Zeiss color, and killer telephoto primes like 135GM around(longer than 85/105) and I made the switch against mainstream idea from Sony to Nikon. So if you happen to be someone who acquired Z bodies and somehow considering this adapter for whatever reasons you know best, it is rather a tricky situation that you have to really have a clear idea what you want to do with it.

This is good information for dual-brand shooters but the 24 1.8 S Nikon lens is optically better and it is cheaper, more rugged so anyone needing 24 primes it is a good reason to switch to Z6/7. There are a lot of other reasons to switch but S lenses are going good that it is enough reason.

Bought TechArt TZE-01 (Sony E to Nikon Z) for Tamron 28-200. It worked with the lens although at 200mm af often stopped working until I zoomed the lens back and forth. The docking station was not recognised by the laptop and 2 separate PCs although I tried many working usb cables. Returned and ordered another TechArt TZE-01. This time not recognised by both PCs and the camera. I have to return again. It's a pity because with this adapter Tamron 28-200 focuses really fast and all images were sharp unlike the same lens with Sony a7c as in this case about 30% of images were out of focus which was very anoying.

I'm planning to buy it and was thinking to use it with my Sony E mount (APS-C) lenses: Samyang 12mm F2, Sigma 30mm F1.4 and Sony 50mm F1.8 OSS, however I was told that it may not fit properly because Z50 has a slightly different configuration inside due to the smaller sensor and the way the pins are positioned. Will the Techart TZE-01 adapter work on Nikon Z50?

Unfortunately, it does not. Z6 and Z7 only, due a physical conflict between the adapter and the camera body inside of the mount area.

It was a slower shutter speed guys... and the ‘hybrid’ worked quite well for what it is.

I'm sorry if we left you that impression. Even down to 1/80th (which is still quite a speedy shutter speed), the Nikon lens does not introduce the delay that the adapted lens brings. Our conclusion is that the smaller aperture takes a small bit longer for the camera to adjust to when working with the adapter.

Not slow enough of a shutter speed to cause the amount of lag that I experienced between clicking the shutter button, the lens stopping down, and getting the shot. Even a 1/60th shutter speed is .016 of a second for the shutter being open. The aperture in the Z camera moves slower with the techart and a sony lens than it does with a native Z lens, regardless of shutter speed. Since this time, I have noticed that, even with Z lenses, there is some very small/slight lag when stopping down, but not as much as with the techart/sony combination. I'm certainly being picky, but I made it my prerogative to point out any differences that I saw between using native lenses and using adapted lenses.

My heart was hurting when I saw that Nikon made only one adapter, and that adapter doesn't support AF-D lenses. Now that Nikon has in-body image stabilization on Z6 and Z7, all of the brilliant AF-D lenses could have gotten new life on mirrorless cameras. Sony when they released the A7, A7R in 2013, six years ago, they released two adapters, LA-EA3 and LA-EA4, every Minolta A mount lens ever made was compatible with the A7/A7R system because Sony made the LA-EA4 with the screw driver motor inside the adapter. Nikon should have learned this from Sony. See for full details from the great Gary Friedman kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o76jiZaGr8nblKs.html

Nikon does acknowledge the _nay-kon_ pronunciation as one of the proper way to say it. The _zee_ vs _zed_ is an age old argument. I won't bother with that.

Why would anybody want to put a Sony lens on the Z Nikon. The Z lenses are good enough to do the job, and enough high quality Nikon F mount lenses to use with the Z system.
@daxshell242
@daxshell242 3 жыл бұрын
Your review is a touch flawed. An adapter or lens is not going to prevent the camera from detecting a face. The face and eye detection is done entirely by the body. The reason that third party and adapted lenses struggle is that they dont tune the lens response to motor inputs the way the body expects. If you want to correctly review an adapter or lens, you need to put it into scenarios where you are demanding long focus throws and a moving subject. Otherwise, the small differences can be chalked up to minor differences in lighting or backgrouns that the ae algoroithm is struggling with, not the lens.
