I started drinking as a young man during my time in the Marines. Several combat tours later and now retired, I "pulled my head up out of the sand" one day and realized how much I was drinking. I used to think my wife was nagging me, but when I took an honest look at myself I saw that she wasn't nagging me - she was trying to save me. So with the same motivation I attacked the enemy, I attacked alcohol. The look on her face watching me pour almost a thousand dollars worth of alcohol down the drain was priceless. And although I will have an occassional drink on special occassions now, I can go weeks without drinking any alcohol and you guys are right! I don't miss it at all. I sleep better, have more energy when I get up, and just feel better about everything. Anybody out there thinking about quitting alcohol? Just do it! You can make it; one drink at a time; one day at a time. I promise you it gets easier with each passing day. And one day, you won't have to hide from alcohol - you'll be able to sit next to people drinking and be like "no, just get me a water with cucumbers in it."

I wish when I was about 23/24 I just took like a year off drinking, it would have saved me about 6 years of serious dysfunctional behavior. I still drink, but like 5 drinks per week. But when I was 29 my life was terrible and I was full of anxiety and depressed all the time, so I didn't drink for 3 weeks and it was INSANE how good I felt. I could not believe how much my mood improved. So in retrospect I now know that I sorta ruined my 20s by drinking 4 drinks minimum each day, probably drank 35-40 drinks over the week, because of that delusion you have when you are young that you are invincible, and because of FOMO, YOLO, all that BS.

As as ex-party-drink-my-face-off-7-nights-a-week queen who has now been sober for a couple of years I will tell you... I feel 100x better than I ever did when I was drinking. And even on the rare occasion that I have a drink now - I immediately feel tired, I get a headache, and it makes me really nauseous. I never thought I would feel that much better, and admittedly I was drinking way more than what is normal and healthy for any pint-sized human being, but... 10/10 would quit again.

My bet is you're feeling exhausted in the evenings because of "GABA withdrawal" kicking in due to long-term alcohol use messing with up your GABA receptors. This is why you feel relaxed after a few drinks. This is also the first step to alcohol addiction. It should go away after a few months of abstinence. Basically got to rewire your brain back. The reason you're waking up in the middle of the night is lack of GABA modulation causing anxiety. That's my bet. That's a lot of GABA in one paragraph. GABA is a "system" in the brain that calms you down. Disclaimer: I have a PhD in Neuroscience.

I accidentally stopped drinking 8 years ago to support a friend who was having a rough time and was hitting the bottle a bit. We stopped together for a month and it worked well for us both. Like you, I wasn't much of a drinker in the first place (0 - 10 units a week) so had no reason to think it was having any effect on my health, but when I stopped for a month I felt WONDERFUL! Great sleep, clear head, no mood swings, much better concentration, no midnight munchies. I put it to the test a couple of times to see if it really was the booze, and it was - I felt dreadful. I've never looked back.

I’m not sure how much you drank prior to your experiment but I can tell you from experience, the waking up in the middle of the night will take longer than 6 months. The main thing I experienced after much time quitting drinking was the power and confidence I felt being in total control of my emotions.

What you experienced during your first month might have been "anhedonia" With chronic substance use, the brain adapts by lowering dopamine receptors and diminishing the reward system's sensitivity. This is why in early recovery, some people experience anhedonia, the inability to experience pleasure. As a fellow Wisconsinite, I can relate to the struggle of trying to be sober in a culture that is steeped in social alcoholism.

I stopped alcohol when I locked down for Covid. I’ve discovered that I associated drinking with being with friends and since we weren’t spending time with friends I didn’t drink. As the time went by, I kept questioning what it was that I thought might be another issue. It’s that I wanted the sugar and that I like the fancy glasses and the umbrella thing in the glass. I can have fresh squeezed fruit, add a salted rim or the tooth pick with fresh fruit on it for something that satisfies me just as much. I questioned how I was going to feel when out to dinner with a couple friends and one ordered wine. It was an Italian restaurant that had a nice wine list. I chose a fun dessert instead. 27 + months later, I will continue with my choice to stop.

It’s definitely different seeing quitting as partly an experiment (one that is helpful and really inspiring). My family has some people dealing with alcoholism so I can feel how tense I get watching the beginning of the video. For so many people this is the hardest thing they’ll ever do because generally alcoholism tends to lead to a lot of destruction. For the folks who see their drinking as a real problem, I hope that they seek support as well as a discussion with their doctor to keep track of things, detox can be lethal for long time alcoholics and needs more medical guidance. It’s a comfort to see parents trying out so many changes to better their life, not drinking can only lead to good things. Thank you for sharing this journey.

Raised 3 great kids with no alcohol in the house, and no regrets. Then, craft beer hit the scene big time here in Grand Rapids Michigan, so we became enthusiastic craft beer snobs about 2013. Now, the latest medical reports are finding that even one beer a day for women have huge detrimental effects on brain function down the road. Damn! Welp, back on the wagon for us! And you were so funny together! “Hibiscus rite”: starting something that is amazing, if only the stars align etc.

My wife and I enjoyed drinking, way to much. She quit as a New Years deal. 2 years later she still hasn't drank a drop. I quit a year ago and it reminded me of quitting tobacco. After a month it was behind me but i still wanted a drink. At Christmas I had an Old Fashion my sister made for me. I drank a couple of sips and gave it back to her. It just didn't taste the same. I'm done drinking, feel so much better without it.

I think you guys look better after 4 months without alcohol. And I wish you all the strength in the world to endure "why don't you drink" and "come on, just a little one" - there are a shirt lot of people out there who think something is wrong with you if you choose not to drink alcohol ever again in your life.

I finally joined you guys and have not drank since the beginning of January! I was actually surprised at how easy it was, especially after coming off the holidays. I also don't really notice too much of a difference in sleep either, but it certainly hasn't gotten worse. I also love that now there's a lot more NA beers now, since I do really love beer, the hoppier the better. In a way I was surprised at how much less I drink of an NA beer vs the regular, but at the same time, of course that makes sense! I would be curious to try some mocktails, if I can either, make my own that are less sweet like the watermelon one, or trying some cool NA cocktail mixes, I've heard theres a lot of interesting herbal ones that might suit me. Can't stand sickly sweet. Otherwise I've honestly just been fine with fizzy water or an occasional sweet drink in place of tons of alcoholic drinks.

Decaf coffee beans are fantastic! I love coffee. I used to be able to drink it at anytime without any issues, but now, if I have a caffeinated coffee past ~3 pm, it will definitely keep me from sleeping well. Most of my friends think it's weird that I have decaf coffee (because "What's the point without caffeine?"), but it just makes me so happy to have an afternoon/evening coffee without the sleep disturbance.

Stopped drinking 12 years ago. I never think of it. In fact, smell of wine the other day, made my tummy churn. It didn't start of that way, I was obsessed with it. And then...slowly..it loosens.. its hold on you. Moments you crave become further and further apart. You simply forget about it, the way you forget a dream that seemed so vivid in the morning.

I'm nearly 3 years sober and I do have an addendum to that #2-- it's hard for many, but the one thing I tell people looking to quit long term-- it IS doable with hard work and a good support system. And you are right, it does get easier with time. it's a lot easier for me today with 2 years and some 9 months than it was at 5, 30, or 80 days in. so incredibly proud of y'all and anyone else who is seeing success with this

About 3 weeks in myself. I'm a Homebrewer so not brewing has been kind of disappointing, but recently I tried making some hopped hibiscus chamomile tea and kegging it and I'm very surprised with how good it ended up being. Very close to a fruited Gose minus the sea salt (which I may add next batch) and may possibly try kettle souring with lactobacillus to add some additional tartness. If I can perfect it I feel like it would be good enough to make at a large scale and sell.

I've always been rather strict on alcohol, no more than 1 drink (if that!!) outside the house, no more than 2 at home. Didn't happen more than a few times a month anyway. I stopped when TTC. It's not like I was dependent in any way, but I do miss the nice warming feeling of a glass of red on a cold day. Or just the feeling of treating myself.

I’ve made it through 90 days. - I sleep much better, but I did find myself sweating at night and waking up with a wet shirt -my skin improved. No more pimples or redness -I didn’t lose weight, but looked like I lost 10 lbs because I deflated and was less puffy - I craved less-salty foods especially in the morning. When hung over I wanted an egg McMuffin or bacon and eggs. I also lost the craving for fast-food, pizza, chips and junk food. - I craved sugar, so I always have bags of candy around -my bank account looked much better. Alcohol can be expensive, especially when you drink booze. - I did find myself being a bit irritable at first

I'd like to see you try one of the food sensitivity tests, then eliminate any foods you were/are sensitive to and see how that effects your sleep. The test I recommend is the MRT test, but you might want to try one of the more popular Everlywell tests.
